    2. Tim Treadwell
    3. Greetings folks, I was just wondering if there might be anyone on the list with connections to my Mecklenburg Co. STEWARTS who could increase my knowledge. The earliest Stewart that I've traced so far is Jefferson Stewart. He died before 7/28/1845, which is the first date of his estate settlement papers. His son, Andrew Jackson "Jack" Stewart, was born about 1838 in the Lemley Township area (near Huntersville) and married Mary SLOAN, daughter of Susan Sloan, according to the published marriage record from the Western Democrat newspaper of Charlotte, NC. on 12/16/1857. Andrew Jackson Stewart is the only child mentioned in the estate papers of Jefferson Stewart. After the death of his father, Andrew Jackson Stewart had several guardians including John C. JOHNSTON, Robert P. WILEY, John A. DEWEESE and then Fanny Wiley (wife of Robert P.). He appears in the 1850 Meck. Co. census as Jackson Wiley, age 12, in the household of Robert Wiley of Mallard Creek Dist. Andrew Jackson Stewart died about 1862 in Mecklenburg Co. leaving two children, Elmer Andrew and a daughter S.W. Stewart. His wife died about 1874 and his children (being over 14 yo) requested that John F. Sloan be made their guardian. I suspect that John F. Sloan was a relative of the childrens mother, but haven't seen anything to confirm that, nor have I been able to find a Susan Sloan. I'd be interested in comparing notes with anyone who thinks we might have a connection, or can help shed some light on the family. cheers, Tim Treadwell

    1. [NCMECKLE] Salisbury Road
    2. Donna Johnson
    3. US Highway 29 north of Charlotte used to be referred to as the Salisbury Road because it was the road one would take from Charlotte north to the town of Salisbury. I-85 follows the same general route, except that Hwy 29 actually goes through central Charlotte while I-85 bypasses. Some of my ORR ancestors, who lived in Mallard Creek township, lived along "The Salisbury Road." I have a map of townships in Mecklenburg County at this address: http://www.geocities.com/Heartland/Hills/1174/mecklenburg_map.html Derita is another neighborhood referred to many times - it is between Long Creek and Mallard Creek. Hwy 21 north of Charlotte is known as Statesville Road (destination Statesville in Iredell Co.) Hwy 24/27 east of Charlotte is known as Albemarle Road (destination Albemarle in Stanly County) Old Hwy 74 east of Charlotte is known as Monroe Road (destination Monroe in Union County.) Hwy 49 south is known as York Road (destination York, SC) and so on Tyvola Road is in Sharon Township. Donna J. Johnson Charlotte, Mecklenburg Co., North Carolina, USA my url: <http://www.geocities.com/heartland/hills/1174>

    2. Is your James Polk in the same line as James Knox Polk who became president? I have a Leonidas Polk that married Sarah Hawkins, dauh of Philemon Hawkins, III. He would probably have been born abt 1775 or so-just a "guestimate". I have some info on Knox/Polk-not much but will share if you think there is a connection.

    3. Harry, I, too, am looking for Kerr information. My great-grandfather was born in Henderson. These are the people that I am trying to research...Duncan Montgomery Kerr - I have conflicting info has to his birthplace Either VA or Person County, NC. I believe he may have had a brother, Hugh. Hugh and his parents were born in Scotland. Duncan married Mary Ann Weaver Cox in Mecklenburg Co. Feb 29, 1839. They had two sons, William Henry Harrison Kerr born in 1841 and Leonard Wesley Kerr (grgrandfather) born in 1844. They moved to Henderson, KY when, I don't know. I am sure it was probably after 1850. Hugh was said to have moved there first. If this makes a connection, really would like to hear from you as I don't know my great, great, great, grandparents names.
