    3. Benj Thompson was mentioned in the 1796 Mecklenburg County NC, Petition (for a new county) along with other Thompsons. I also have a copy of the index from the Osborne Diary (early 1800s) where the surname Thompson also appeared. That film should be available at your local LDS Family History Library. Twelve Mile Creek runs through what is now in Union County, NC, along the northern SC border and you might find more records there. 3. I'm quite certain that the LDS Family History Libraries have microfilm copies of property deeds in this area for the time period which you are researching. I located film copies of deeds on Twelve Mile Creek listing a John Redford, probably my gggrandfather. My message: Just read your posting in the Mecklenburg list and for the first time in many years I saw the name Gideon as a sibling of your Thompson. I have searched everywhere - figured with a name like Gideon it would be easy to find him - wasn't so. Just read the posting and went ape - haven't even looked to see if I could help you but will certainly do so. I have Gideon's family forward, hadn't connected him with anything prior to him but do have Thompson information that I was trying to tie in. There was a Benjamin Thompson in Virginia in the same area as my Bradshaws. I will pull together what I have and send you a note tomorrow. I have a copy of Gideon's will, a map that shows a plot of some of his land, where he is buried, etc. Let me know if you think any of it would help you. About three years ago I belonged to the Thompson list and there was a lot of material there, will also check that. If you have anything on dear Gideon would surely appreciate it.

    3. Steve, I checked my Court Minutes Book, Bk 1, 1774-1780 by Brisco (don't have his full name as Southern Historical Press did a reprint on it and they took the copyright) Because I the copyright I will tell you only that there is reference to a deed from Thomas Thompson & his wife Pressila to Jennings Thompson for 48 acres on 16 Jan 1772. There is not a book and page no. since this was a court record and not a deed filing. 2. Was it a practice to leave the property only to the widow or the minor children in a will? Some kind person sent me an abstract of the Benjamin R. Smith Will" dated 25 Feb 1865, probated in Oct. 1866 Court. Leaves to wife Nancy S. Smith his entire estate. At her death, then equally divided between his five children, B. Rush, Elizabeth, Jane, Wm. Mark and John D. Smith. He gives money to son Samuel L. Smith and to his niece Mary E. Smith. The executors were: sons B. Rush and Saml. L. Smith. He leaves to his 5 children and Samuel is not listed with them, but he refers to him as "son" in the named executors. Samuel is the one I need. He would have been born about 1841 or before and was married before 1865 so would not be listed as a child. (He wasn't with the family in 1860 census but I haven't sent for the 1850 one yet.) D. 3. I'm sorry list people, but Steve's E-mail address bounced so I am sending this to the list. Steve, For your Deeds and Court Minutes of Mecklenburg Co., NC, I suggest you look at Herman W. Holcomb has published Abstracts of Early Wills 1763-1790 of Mecklenburg Co., NC. From Holcomb's abstracts: Will Book D pp.26-27 Will of Jennings Thompson of the County of Mecklenburg, 7 April 1785, often sickly and weak in body; to my five youngest children Joseph Thompson, Benjamin Thompson, Moses Thompson, & E. 3. Verna, I don't know enough about Elizabeth Smith to answer your question. In my Pettus family materials there are lots of Smiths who may or may not be relatives--if not relatives than no doubt neighbors. I cannot figure it out. I know that Susannah Pettus, born ca. 1800, daughter of Capt. George Pettus, married John Cheek Smith but there are others such as Thomas B. Smith and Edward Smith and then there is Sally Smith and her badboy grandson, William Smith. Every time they go to court some Pettus or other seems to be a witness. I simply cannot sort them out. Oh, and Paul Buchanan keeps wanting stuff put on the Mecklenburg Queries board. Since this is your family of Bowdens do as you like. You are welcome to post what I sent to you if you wish to do so and I will not post since there is certainly no need for us to both do so. Besides if there is a response to the Boweden info, it should go to you. Louise ---------- >From: "Verna Dinkins" <[email protected]> >To: [email protected] >Subject: Re: [NCMECKLE] Arthur J. Do you have any information on this John, brother of your Jennings Thompson? My John Thompson married Nancy CAWTHORNE, and was having children in the 1809-1829 time frame. There is at least one more contemporary John Thompson, however. Mecklenburg Co. marriages (compilation by Brent Holcombe) lists a John Thompson m. Nancy MACK 19 Nov 1813; John Williamson, bondsman; Isaac Alexander wit.. A John Thompson died in 1817 in Mecklenburg County; inventory of his estate was signed by James BLACK and Nancy Thompson, August 1817. In August 1819, a Mary HUDSON challenged this John Thompson's will in court, saying that it was the work of his wife Nancy Thompson, who by this time had married Joseph PURVIANCE. "Whereas the said paper writing was not the last will and testament of the said John Thompson ... but was an instrument of writing which was obtained from him by the deceitful artifices and undue influence forcibly and fraudulently exercised over him by his wife Nancy now Nancy Perviance the wife of Joseph Perviance. The deceased when the said paper writing was extorted from him was very aged and infirm, childish in his dotage, his reason and understanding almost lost. To said Nancy young and artful, conscious of his infirmaties and of his incapacity to make a will, procured the said writing to be drawn..." My mother copied all this material from the NC state archives some years ago, thinking it was our John and Nancy Thompson. At this point I'm convinced it's a different couple, but I am still curious. Is this Nancy MACK Thompson, or yet another Nancy? Who is Mary HUDSON? Elizabeth Harris state coordinator, NCGenWeb http://www.rootsweb.com/~ncgenweb/

His siblings were Benjamin, John, James, Gideon, Drury, Susannah, Mary, Joseph, William, Isham "Shem", Zacharias, and Elizabeth. Jennings Thompson's wife is unknown and may have predeceased him. I do not have a copy but have requested one from the NC archives. supposedly only his 5 youngest children were named in this will: Joseph Benjamin Moses E.___ Aaron.
