Smalley b. 1822 NC To: NCRUTHER-L@rootsweb.com Cc: NCMCDOW-L@rootsweb.com MIME-Version: 1.0 Content-Type: text/plain; charset=us-ascii Content-Length: 2904 I think I'm still on this list. I hope so anyway. I just haven't gotten many messages in the last month or so. I am still researching my gggrandfather, James Camnel Smalley. I just wondered if anyone on this list has any information about the John Smalley b. 1780 in NC, who died in 1830 by his own hand. A lady submitted information from the article that relates to the Burke and Rutherford Co. Smalleys that was in THE SPECTATOR, June 11, 1830: On Friday the 4th, Mr. John Smalley of Bracketown, Burke Co. committed suicide by hanging himself from a tree. Evidently he had suffered for years from a bruised knee that affected his entire nervous system. His family observed that he was melancholy so sent his small son with him everywhere to keep an eye on him. On Friday, the 4th, they went to the gold mines. Mr. Smalley sent his son to look for his pipe that he said he had left on his horse. When the son couldn't find it he came back looking for his father and when he couldn't find him, raised the alarm in the gold mines and many people looked into the night for him with no success. They found him the next morning hanging from a limb of a tree. He was 50 years old and left behind a large family with many children.....(Wording has been changed to avoid any possible copyright laws should anyone have published part of these papers****) The reason I am putting this here is because I suspect that my gggrandfather, James C. Smalley, might possibly be one of his sons (possibly the one that was sent with him). He would have been about 8 years old at that time. I found a Nathaniel Smalley b. 1790, on the NC census as well as a John A. Smalley (probably his son, b. 1824,) who could also have been James C.'s father. I just can't prove either theory without information on both Nathaniel and the John who committed suicide. I do know that James C. Smalley was born in McDowell County, NC in 1822, which is a neighboring county, and know that some of Nathaniel's family moved to Rutherford County at some point. Then they all (Nathaniel, John A. and James C.) moved to Floyd County, GA either in the 1830's or 1840's. I still haven't pinpointed when exactly. I also don't know if James C. went to GA at the same time as Nathaniel either. Does anyone on this list do look-ups? I would be glad to pay someone to do it to find just the simple facts of the names of Nathaniel Smalley's wife and children (with birth dates and place, etc. if possible) and also the same facts for John Smalley (who died in 1830). I live in Texas and it's awfully hard to do research that far back unless you go to that state. I sure would appreciate if anyone can help me.
