Pool Struck dead on porch after Sunday storm passed. Wife receives slight shock. John S. Pool, 54 years of age, was killed Sunday afternoon about 3 o'clock when struck by a bolt of lightening during the severe electrical storm that visited Marion and vicinity. Mr. Pool was standing on the porch of his home in West Marion, with Mrs. Pool and a neighbor, Lawrence Sherlin. The storm having apparently passed over, they had just walked out to the porch when the thunderbolt struck. Mrs. Pool and Sherlin both received light shocks. Mr. Pool was a lifetime resident of the county [McDowell County NC]. He had many friends in the community where he had been prominent in church and fraternal circles. He was a steward in the Stroudtown Methodist Church, was a member of the Knights of Pythias, Woodsmen of the World, and the Patriotic Order, Sons of America. Funeral services were held Tuesday afternoon at Stroudtown Methodist Church, Rev. E.P. Green officiated. Interment was to the church cemetery. Surviving Mr. Pool are his widow; five sons and two daughters; four grandchildren; four brothers and four sisters. --From the Marion paper, year is approximately 1928.
