Hello, I am not a Smalley researcher but notice that you state you known John C. Smalley was born in McDowell Co., NC in 1822. I thought it would help you in your search for records to know that McDowell Co., NC was not formed into a county until 1842. Your Smalley ancestors could have either been living in Burke or the northwestern section of Rutherford Co., NC in 1822, possibly in the area that later became McDowell. I hope this helps you narrow your search for information for your John C. Smalley. C. Ernst

I hope so anyway. I just haven't gotten many messages in the last month or so. I am still researching my gggrandfather, James Camnel Smalley. I just wondered if anyone on this list has any information about the John Smalley b. 1780 in NC, who died in 1830 by his own hand. A lady submitted information from the article that relates to the Burke and Rutherford Co. Smalleys that was in THE SPECTATOR, June 11, 1830: On Friday the 4th, Mr. John Smalley of Bracketown, Burke Co. committed suicide by hanging himself from a tree. Evidently he had suffered for years from a bruised knee that affected his entire nervous system. His family observed that he was melancholy so sent his small son with him everywhere to keep an eye on him. On Friday, the 4th, they went to the gold mines. Mr. Smalley sent his son to look for his pipe that he said he had left on his horse. When the son couldn't find it he came back looking for his father and when he couldn't find him, raised the alarm in the gold mines and many people looked into the night for him with no success. They found him the next morning hanging from a limb of a tree. He was 50 years old and left behind a large family with many children.....(Wording has been changed to avoid any possible copyright laws should anyone have published part of these papers****) The reason I am putting this here is because I suspect that my gggrandfather, James C. Smalley, might possibly be one of his sons (possibly the one that was sent with him). He would have been about 8 years old at that time. I found a Nathaniel Smalley b. 1790, on the NC census as well as a John A. Smalley (probably his son, b. 1824,) who could also have been James C.'s father. I just can't prove either theory without information on both Nathaniel and the John who committed suicide. I do know that James C. Smalley was born in McDowell County, NC in 1822, which is a neighboring county, and know that some of Nathaniel's family moved to Rutherford County at some point. Then they all (Nathaniel, John A. and James C.) moved to Floyd County, GA either in the 1830's or 1840's. I still haven't pinpointed when exactly. I also don't know if James C. went to GA at the same time as Nathaniel either. Does anyone on this list do look-ups? I would be glad to pay someone to do it to find just the simple facts of the names of Nathaniel Smalley's wife and children (with birth dates and place, etc. if possible) and also the same facts for John Smalley (who died in 1830). I live in Texas and it's awfully hard to do research that far back unless you go to that state. I sure would appreciate if anyone can help me. I need to find out if anyone in this list has any information about any Smalley's who lived in this county during the 1820's and/or 1830's. I am trying to find a record of my gggrandfather who I just found out was born in McDowell, Cty., NC in 1822. His name was James Camnel Smalley and he migrated to Georgia as a young man I guess. I need to know who his parents were. We are "stumped" at his generation. (He married Nancy Elizabeth Witherspoon who was born in GA). Thanks for any help anyone can give! In the late 1700s, Christopher Isbell married an Elizabeth King probably in Surry Co, NC. Christopher was Elizabeth's second husband, James King was her first. After Christopher died in 1811 in NC, she applied for a pension from her first husband's service. In that pension we find that Elizabeth and Christopher had two children, Elizabeth b 1780 and Littleton b 1789. Also, from the Surry Co Deed Book, Christopher Isbell give his son "Littleton EASBEL" land. Littleton died in October 1823. There is a petition in court for his widow Caron/Karon (11-11-1823) and his children are listed: William Christopher Elizabeth (married William HOLDER) John (married Martha HAYNES) Richard (of whom i found a bastardy bond when he in 1859 with Martha/Mary POTEAT - then later he marries Julia STILLWELL) Mary/Polly (married Benjamin WEEKS) Nancy (married Jethro MORGAN) I have not located anything further about Wm and Christopher. I know that Caron/Karon died after 1860 but i do not know her parentage or her surname. John Isbell died in October 1862 "in a horrible affray" with a gunshot wound that killed in on the spot. Apparently he got into a fight with a J.C. Neal (who was probably about 18 years old). I've found a brief paragraph in an 1862 newspaper about this and have searched the Neal family a little. I don't know if they were dueling or just having an argument. Obviously, John lost. I haven't found a tombstone for him - although family "story" claims it says he "died during the civil war" (note -he didn't die IN it - he did not fight in it) Martha then moved from NC to IL. Children of Martha and John: Arrister H. (married Clementine STEELE) Buena Vista (died in Il abt age 21-22) Alphonso H. (married Mary Lillian BROWN) Eldorado (married Wm. WILLEY) Nevad (married Sam MITTEN) Minster (died in infancy) Anna (married William BARD) infant (died in infancy) ******All these children were born in Marion, McDowell Co, NC. Is anyone related to any part of this line? Elaine Kahler

My father, born in 1914 in Madison Co., NC, worked in either the WPA, CCC or TVA when he was about 16 years old. My aunt said he built roads. Does anyone have any idea which of these projects were in progress in the Madison County area abt. 1930ish (possibly + or - a few years)? Does anyone know where I could possibly get a list of employees of the programs or their web sites, I'd like to do some research on the program he was involved with. Thank you. Shirley, This should help you out. I have the following on my great great grandparents. Elmira "Myra" Lowery (d/o Alexander "Elec" W. Lowery and Rachell McKinney) born about 1852, died about 1886 (buried Grassy Creek Bapt. Church Cem Michell Co). She married (in Feb 1870) Jesse Wilburn Biddix(s/o George Biddix and Nancy Smith) born 14 Dec 1848, died 17 May 1917 (buried McKinney Family Cem.) They had the following children... Jesse Rolduph Biddix (b. 13 Mar 1871, d. ?) married Sara Parcilla Padgett on 12 Aug 1894 Alice Jane Biddix (my great grandmother) born 28 Sept 1876,died 25 Mar 1908, married Waitsell Marion Mckinney on 1 April 1897. Flem Biddix (married Daisy Chapman) Tom Biddix (married Queenie Ingram) Vistie Biddix Emma Biddix born 20 April 1884, died 10 Oct 1959 (married a Parker) Do you think that Jesse Rolduph Biddix is the Jesse S you asked about? It looks like it since he married a Sarah Parcilla Padgett. Jesse was born 13 Mar 1871 and married Sarah on 12 Aug 1894. I also have Jesse Wilburn Biddix married to Cora Greene Stubbs and a Sarah Galathia McKinney (who was Waitsell Marion McKinney's sister) but they did not have any sons named Jesse. Let me know if this helps. William D. Lewis, MS * bill.lewis@intervet.akzonobel.nl -----Original Message----- From: Shirley Pittman [mailto:moochie@rfci.net] Sent: Tuesday, January 25, 2000 7:18 PM To: Lewis, W (Bill) Subject: RE: Lowery- Mckinney Hello Mr. Lewis, I saw your posting, concerning the Lowery, McKinney and BIDDIX families on the Mitchell County, NC List. I would like to ask you a question about the children of Jesse Wilburn BIDDIX and Elmira LOWERY. Do you show a Jesse S. BIDDIX as a son of Jesse Wilburn BIDDIX and Elmira LOWERY, and are there other children as well? I have been researching the families of the children of my gr-gr-grandfather, Noah PADGETT of Rutherford County. Noah's daughter, Sarah Percilla PADGETT married Jesse S. BIDDIX in Rutherford County ca. 1894. I had not been able to find anything about his parents in Rutherford County, but I found a direct descendant of Sarah P. PADGETT and Jesse S. BIDDIX (Randy & Pat Hovis of Lincolnton, NC) and was told by them that Jesse's parents were "J. Wilburn BIDDIX and Elmira LOWERY." They also gave me the names of George BIDDIX and Nancy SMITH as J. Wilburn's parents. Other than this I have nothing on Jesse S. BIDDIX. I was hoping that if you have him in your database as a son of Jesse Wilburn and Elmira, you might have some other information on him as well. I would be happy if you could confirm for me that Jesse S. is indeed the son of Jesse Wilburn and Elmira. Thank you for any help. I appreciate you taking the time to check. Your friend, Shirley Pittman

One set of my third great grandparents were Alexander Lowrey and Rachel McKinney. In NC Troops 49th-52nd there is a listing for an Alexander W. Lowrey of McDowell County, a private who was injured at Malvern Hill, VA on 1 July 1862 and died a few days later in Richmond on 6 July 1862. According to when I had Alexander Lowrey listed as being born in 1831 and the age of Alexander W. Lowrey when he enlisted (31 years old in 1862) this appeared to be the same person. Can anyone verify these are the same person? In addition, another set of my 3rd great grandparents from Mitchell County was Charles Ephraim McKinney and Sarah Hobson. Any information regarding relatives older than Charles or Sarah would be greatly appreciated. Note, the Rachel McKinney (wife of Alexander Lowrey or Lowery) listed above is a daughter of Charles Ephraim McKinney from another marriage to an Elizabeth Lowery.
