I belong to the Allison Family Association and it is absolutely wonderful. We have so many wonderful cousins who are willing to help locate that "missing" link. Please do join us and we would be absolutely thrilled to have you come to our reunion in October. I'm researching a lot of families in McDowell County as well as adjoining counties and belong to several associations, but none of them compare to the amazing Allison organization and its excellent publication. I recommend it strongly to everyone. Our history is proud and we are members of a wonderful family and I'm so excited to be a member of it. If I can be of any help to you and your search, please let me know.

Bonnie, I failed to note that there are of course some errors in those earliest works of our family history. Of course that is to be expected when you don't have someone else's work to "borrow from". The ones who went first naturally didn't discover everything, but that doesn't in any way diminsh their honored place in our family.

NC Query Forum Board URL: http://cgi.rootsweb.com/~genbbs/genbbs.cgi/USA/NC/McDowell?read=513 Surname: Allison, Allanson, Reade, Roberts, Posey, Burch, et al ------------------------- Bonnie, You got lucky today! Welcome home! I'm president of the 450 member National Allison (Allanson) Family Association and am delighted to lead you to your long-lost family. And what a huge and tight family it is! Yes, there is a mountain of Allison family history out there -- a century worth of it. Lots of folks claim to have discovered our history, but I go with the dated writings which prove that the pioneers of our history were already at work long before any of us were even born. Virginia Allison Sheip (1875-1955) began her research in 1898 according to surviving dated papers. By the 1920's she already knew the name of the immigrant ancestors and that they were English. Equally important, Mary Turpin Layton of Washington DC was working not long after Virginia. In 1950 Mary published a booklet of info on the immigrant ancestors which has been widely available through LDS for decades. In addition, another family member, T.B. Gotham, was work at work by the 1940's. So Allison family history certainly isn't anything new! We do credit Virginia Allison Sheip as our family's first researcher and the one who "broke ground". Plus the first one to discover the identity of the immigrant ancestor. For that she deserves much praise! BTW: Virgina was regularly taking the train to Old Fort in McDowell County in the 1930's to interview elderly family members and record their family stories and what they knew of family history. Pricelss history! She recorded much lost history which sheds light and fills in the gaps created by burned Burke County records. She also collected priceless family Bible data during her visits. Our association was founded in 1996 at the first NATIONAL ALLISON FAMILY REUNION in nearby Brevard, NC. The organization and the reunion have grown by leaps and bounds. Reunion attendance usually runs over 400 people for the full weekend event. The organization publishes THE ALLISON FAMILY VOICE, a large quarterly family magazine loaded with family history and news of the present family. Members from all across America contribute articles and stories to the publication. There are over 200 genealogists in the organization! The National Allison Family Reunion is a private event of the association, but we invite all lines and branches of the family to attend as our guests. Attendance is strictly by advance CONFIRMED RESERVATION only at this elborate affair which always includes a big variety of live entertainment and several family history workshops. Sorry, no walk-ins without reservations are admitted to the reunion as it is a fully catered affair, so get reservations! For information, including dates and how to get reservations, contact me by e-mail. Membership is open to any and all descendants, regardless of surname today, of THOMAS ALLANSON/ALLISON (1639-1684), LORD OF CHRISTIAN TEMPLE MANOR, the immigrant ancestor. For membership information, please contact me at dma12@bellsouth.net.

I hear that there is quite a bit of Allison history already researched and that family members have been at work on this for 100 years or so. Who did this work? Is there 100 years worth of research already done? Is it true that there is already work available going back to the immigrant ancestors of this family? Also, I hear over the Internet that this family has a huge organization and holds a big reunion. Please tell me how to find my family, the organization, and the family reunion. I really want to join the Allison organization!

He sure was an interesting character. 1. [NCMCDOWELL] Cemeteries in McDowell County
    2. I am considering a trip to McDowell County this summer. Are there are cemeteries that anyone is desperate to have surveyed? I would only be able to do 1 or 2 of them, 3 at the most. I don't live in McDowell county (I'm east of Raleigh), so I would only be able to stay in the area (primarily Marion) for a day or two. I would have help with the surveying, but I know from experience it is complicated and time-consuming. Plus, there are other things I would rather do. : ) If someone knows of a MAJOR cemetery that has been overlooked in McDowell County, please let me know. Also, if anyone is IN McDowell County and would like to do a survey, please tell me, I can help you get started with it. It is a very rewarding experience and it helps so many people.
