Hi Phillip (and Macon County gang!), I'm a Patterson researcher, and my Pattersons are from the same area. I've been wondering about your Jerry Monroe Patterson for a long time. As far as I can tell, he doesn't tie in with my Pattersons or any of the other families I've been trying to document in western NC. If he was born around Qualla in 1836, then that would have been either Macon or Haywood, depending on exactly where he lived. This area became Jackson County in 1851, and Swain County took alot of it in 1871, but not all of it. My Pattersons are the ones that Libby Nations mentioned from the Swain County Heritage book. They lived in the area (now in Swain County) on Grassy Branch near the town of Judson (now under water). This area was part of Macon County until 1871 when Swain County was formed. I have a Patterson web page with my Patterson and numerous other families listed. I plan to have a page for Jerry Monroe Patterson, but I just don't know anything about him. I have him buried at Snow Hill cemetery (Macon County) with birth of 19 Jan 1836 and death of 18 May 1902. The first record I have for Jerry is the 1880 Jackson Co, NC census, he is listed there: 1880 Jackson Co, NC pg 251, household # 9, family # 12, District 102 Jerry Patterson, W, M, 43, married, Farmer, born TN, father born TN, mother born TN July A.
