Hi Philip and Bunny, Yes, Philip, yet another common name! I have Wallace A. Moore in my files as well, though I don't know if I am related to him or not. I have two Moore lines in western NC, and so I'm working on all the Moores in that area (there were a bunch of them!). First, thanks Philip, I didn't have Wallace's parents names. I knew he was from Lincoln County, but didn't track him prior to him arriving in Macon County (ca 1836). He was listed on the 1840, 1850 and 1860 macon Co, NC census, and in Towns Co, GA in 1870 and 1880. I have a Moore web site with genealogies for several Moore families, including my two ancestral lines, plus several others lines that may or may not be of interest. I've got a page for Wallace also. The address is below. Let me know how I can help (Bunny, I'm adding your name to the Researcher list for Wallace). Talk to y'all later. Marty Grant - (Marvin A. In the 1870 Macon Co. census there is a John Freeman, 77 and an A. Freeman, 63. Also in Macon Co. marriages, I find a John Freeman who married ibby Watson in 1838-witnessed by Allen Freeman. Can anyone tell me something about these Freeman's? Would appreciate any help. Libby
Hi Phillip (and Macon County gang!), I'm a Patterson researcher, and my Pattersons are from the same area. I've been wondering about your Jerry Monroe Patterson for a long time. As far as I can tell, he doesn't tie in with my Pattersons or any of the other families I've been trying to document in western NC. If he was born around Qualla in 1836, then that would have been either Macon or Haywood, depending on exactly where he lived. This area became Jackson County in 1851, and Swain County took alot of it in 1871, but not all of it. My Pattersons are the ones that Libby Nations mentioned from the Swain County Heritage book. They lived in the area (now in Swain County) on Grassy Branch near the town of Judson (now under water). This area was part of Macon County until 1871 when Swain County was formed. I have a Patterson web page with my Patterson and numerous other families listed. I plan to have a page for Jerry Monroe Patterson, but I just don't know anything about him. I have him buried at Snow Hill cemetery (Macon County) with birth of 19 Jan 1836 and death of 18 May 1902. The first record I have for Jerry is the 1880 Jackson Co, NC census, he is listed there: 1880 Jackson Co, NC pg 251, household # 9, family # 12, District 102 Jerry Patterson, W, M, 43, married, Farmer, born TN, father born TN, mother born TN July A. Patterson, F, W, 27, wife, married, Keeping House, born TN, father born TN, mother born SC C. McLin, W, M, 9, Step Son, born TX, father born TN, mother born TN Horris L. Patterson, Head, W, M, born Jan 1836, 64, married 31 years, born NC, father born NC, mother born NC Julia Patterson, Wife, W, F, born Mar 1852, 64? married 31 years, born NC, father born NC, mother born NC, 11 children born to this mother, 9 still living Monroe Pattterson, Son, W, M, born Mar 1880, 20, single, born NC, father born NC, mother born NC Jesse Pattterson, Son, W, M, born Feb 1882, 18, single, born NC, father born NC, mother born NC Eveline Pattterson, Daughter, W, F, born Apr 1884, 16, single, born NC, father born NC, mother born NC Vina Pattterson, Daughter, W, F, born Apr 1886, 14, single, born NC, father born NC, mother born NC Johhny H. Here is the family as I have it, one of my Grant cousins married into this family: Descendants of Jerry M PATTERSON and Julia A (---) 1. Jerry M Patterson [39423], born 19 Jan 1836 in TN; died 18 May 1902 in Macon Co, NC; buried in Snow Hill Cem, Macon Co, NC. He married in 1868/69 in Jackson Co, NC, Julia A (---) [39422], born Mar 1852 in TN. Children of Jerry M PATTERSON and Julia A (---) were as follows: 2 i Horace L Patterson [39419], born 1873/74 in Jackson Co, NC. 3 ii Mary E Patterson [39421], born 1877/78 in Jackson Co, NC. She married on 20 Dec 1898 in Macon Co, NC, Tam Shepherd [39420]. 4 iii Jerry Monroe Patterson [34866], born Feb 1880 in Jackson Co, NC. 5 iv Jesse C Patterson [7777], born Feb 1882 in Macon Co, NC. Phillip, I found some Patterson's in the Swain Co., NC Heritage Book. Not sure they will help you out. But here is: Captain Sam Patterson of Union County, GA. is listed as commanding officer of his company the "Union Invincibles". Samuel was born in 1805 and was married to Jane Moore who was born in 1815. Carroll Moore Patterson was the son of Samuel and Jane Patterson. Carroll served in the Confederate Army. He was married to Lavina Elizabeth Cathey Patterson. They came to Swain County close to the end of the Civil War. They came from Chathume County, GA. which was renamed Union County. They came by way of covered wagon. The land they owned in GA was an Indian Grant of 160 acres. It was purchased from the Cherokee Indians through the Governor of GA. Carroll M. Patterson was born March 7, 1832 and died Jan. 4, 1914. Lavina E. Cathey Patterson was born July 29, 1844 and died May 21, 1917. Carroll andLavina were one of the earliest families who settled the Grassy Branch Community of Swain Co. They had four sons and four daughters. They were Homes, Lon, Decater, Jim., Nancy, Julie, Rindy and Jenny. Homes married Addie Delozier and they lived at Judson, NC. Their children were Fannie Bur, Sam, Bill, Kenyen, John, Frank and Hattie Mae. Decater married Amanda Jenkins and they made their home on Grassy Branch near Bryson City, their children were Hester, Flora, Vergie, Lillie, Minnie, Bob, Ed, Fred, Floyd and Walter. Lon married Nora Cambey and they lived in Swain Co. most of their lives. They had only one child, Willie Bell. Jim lived in Swain Co. all of his life and never married. Nancy Angeline Patterson was born April 14, 1866 and married William A. Revis on May 20, 1886. She died in 1929 and was buried in Etowah, TN. Two children Mary E. Revis born March 12, 1887 and Louis D. Revis. Julie married Henry Greene. Their children were Bessie, Maude, Thad, Claude, Ethel, Walter, Harley and Alex. Rindy married Zack Guffey. They lived in Cherokee Co., NC. most of their lives . They had one son Wade Guffey. Jennie married Curtis Fox and lived in Swain Co. Their children were Willard, Lenna, Edna, Grace and Winston. (Submitted by Grace F. Gregory) Hope this is some help. Libby Nations
Just in case you missed it, I'm hoping that someone has a 1900, 1910, or 1920 census for Macon County for a lookup. Also, was the area around Qualla part of Macon County in 1836. I'm trying to remember if Macon or Swain came first. Or was it Jackson? The focus of the lookup I need is Jerry Monroe Patterson who was born in the Qualla Township in 1836. I am hoping a later census will show where his father was born. I don't have a first name for his father, but I'm hoping it will show a county of birth so that I can narrow down my research. Jerry moved with his wife, Julie Kerr (Carr), and children to the Cowee Valley about 1895. Jerry and Julie and some of the children are buried at Snow Hill Methodist Church Cemetery. Thanks! Philip Sheppard Beaufort, South Carolina
Hey Folks -- My offer to do look-ups in the Macon County Heritage Book still stands. However, I have a request. Several people have written and just asked me to look up "John Doe" -- no other information. Please give me ALL OF THE INFORMATION YOU HAVE, even if it's just approximate dates. In many cases, even if a family isn't written up, there will be mentions in other family write-ups. I'm perfectly willing to sift through these, but it's time-consuming and I need all of the information I can get to help determine what information might be valuable to you. For example -- if your John Doe lived about 1800-1850, then I won't bother transcribing information about John Doe's who don't fit the time frame. Also, a plug of my own -- the Macon County families that I'm researching include Kimsey, Russel/Russell, Strain, Reed and Cathey. Would love to hear from anyone with information on this crew. Regards -- Judy
Evening folks, Anyone know the parents of these two? Effie SHEPHERD MARRIED: George Clingman RABY, 1919 Found them in Peggy Sue Hooper's Welch Database. Here's another Shepherd I can't place (from the same database): Elija A. SHEPHERD MARRIED: Elizabeth Mary RICE, 1875 Finally, this one: G. Patten SHEPHERD MARRIED: Enaretta Adeline WELCH, 31 DEC 1865 I'm not sure that the last couple are Macon County folks, but just in case... Finally, does anyone have a 1900 or 1910 Macon County census. I really NEED a lookup, PLEASE! Many kind regards, Philip Sheppard Beaufort, South Carolina Listowner: NCMACON, NCRTRANSY
Hi Philip, I loved 'you know you are taking genealogy too seriously.....' . Many Thanks, Gail Robinson
Greetings all, I have been on the road for about 2 months so I had to unsubscribe and resubscribe. Hope I haven't missed too much. Thought I would repost my surnames from the area and see if I can help or be helped by anyone. Here goes: HOLBROOK, MOORE, ROTEN, KILPATRICK, HIGDON, SETZER, BUCHANAN, BLACK, AND STEWART. If anyone has anything on these surnames I would love to exchange info. Also check out my homepage on family treemaker to see if we make any connections. http://www.familytreemaker.com/users/s/c/h/Christopher-E-Schultheis/index.html Chris Schultheis.....
Hi all -- I'm new to this list, and saw several surname postings, so thought I'd post mine. My Macon Co. connections include: Kimsey, Strain, Reed, Russel(l), Cathey and possibly McClure. Also, have the Heritage Book of Macon Co. and will do look-ups, should anyone need one. Judy

Hi, Carolyn, The only one I've seen isn't online (which isn't much help, is it?). It's one I bought at a gas station in Franklin on my last visit there in April. The map was sponsored by the Franklin Area Chamber of Commerce and published by: Accurate Maps P. O. Box 90604 Columbia, South Carolina 29290 (803) 782-8001 It has all of the townships in different colors. Quite nice. Just wish they listed the names of more of the creeks and streams and mountains! I'd still like to get my Shepherd/Welch/Dalton/Patterson descendants on your page. Wonder how we'll figure that one out! <G> Philip Sheppard Beaufort, South Carolina Message to Cousin Jo Fender: Yes, I received your Macon County info, and WOW, what a great piece of work.
