    1. [NCMACON-L] Pensions
    2. Nancy Lehto
    3. I would be very interested in a Civil War list for pensioners and their spouses. I know that my ancestor, John Wesley Long , died 17 Mar 1870 of wounds incurred in the war and that his widow, Elizabeth Jane Dryman, drew a pension for many years but have not been able to find any proof of it. 1. [NCMACON-L] Picklesimer
    2. Libby Nations
    3. For got who was searching the above surname, but I found this in a book "Highlans, North Carolina...a walk into the past" by Gert McIntosh. Maybe it will help. Libby "Benson Picklesimer moved into Clear Creek in 1853 and his oldest son, Thomas Picklesimer, moved from Clear Creek to Whiteside Cove in 1865. His cescendants live there and in other places around Highlands today." " Around 1909 , alarge number of families in the Horse Cove and Whiteside Cove areas migrated westward, seeking employment and a better education. Some returned, others lived out their lives in Montana or Wyoming. Tom Picklesimer of Whiteside Cove, who is 75 years old, still visits Wyoming, where he owns many acresof ranch land, almost every year."

I also coordinate the Transylvania County GenWeb site (aside from running four county lists!), and I have on that site several documents related to Confederate pensioners mentioned in census records, including widows. Also Union veterans and widows, too. Would be a good thing for Jane Moyer (cordinator of the Macon GenWeb site) to include, but I know that often, finding the info, and then getting it uploaded takes lots of time. For me, all my research for the Transylvania site is long distance, living in Beaufort, South Carolina. Kind regards, Philip Philip R. Underwood-Sheppard, Beaufort, S. C. 1. [NCMACON-L] "Hills of Home" by F. B. Lamba?d
    2. RON
    3. I am searching for information that may be in the subject book. According to a note I have there is a section in the book that erching W. Hill came from Western Rutherford County, NC in 1835--the part that is now Polk County. His son Charlie, fought with General Lee in Virginia. His son Grandy Hill (Uncle Buck) was wounded in the Civil War-Minie ball in the knee. It is thought that Stanhope Hill was one of 14 children. Stanhope Hill took part in moving Cherokees to Indian Territory 1837-38. He was Justice of the Peace for Macon County, NC......He built and ran a hotel to promote development of Highlands, NC as a summer resort. He became the first Mayor of Highlands when it was incorporated and remained Mayor for five years. He kept excellent records and they are still locked in the town library vault-can be read there. Stanhope Walker Hill and Celia Marinda Edwards Hill were one of the first families to settle in Horse Cove, NC. After the premature death of Lauinia Arsillas Hill Norton, her daughter Ittie Lavina Norton, came to live and was raised as one of S. W. Hill`s children. Ittie father, Barak Pickeral Norton, died of typhoid fever when she was only 6 weeks old. Her mother Lauinia, died of pneumonia when she was 2 years old. Ittie was born 21 October 1857, Whiteside Cove, Jackson County, NC. She was married 15 February 1888 in Horse Cove in the home of her grandfather, S. W. Hill to Jesse Siler Robinson. I would appreciate any information about the book "Hills of Home" and information about Stanhope Walker Hill and his family. Thanks, Ron Hill Sautee Nacoochee, GA

    3. Hello, Macon county researchers, this may sound odd, but I have only two known ancestors who came from Macon county, and they are both LEDFORD, Peter Sr, and two of his sons; and David Ledford. David was married to Jane BARNES, from Iredell county, but there were Barnes in Macon...so.... Also interested in Humphrey POSEY, BARNES, TEAGUE, JOLLEY, any other LEDFORDs, BRADLEY, and Lewis VanDYKE. I really only know the Ledfords, I would just like to learn more of the others, as they play specific roles in the lives of certsin Macon county Ledfords. Thanks for any help Paul Selk ___________________________________________________________________ You don't need to buy Internet access to use free Internet e-mail. 1. [NCMACON-L] Andrew Strain, Mary Wilson/Reed???
    2. BaggyGenes
    3. Libby, Carol and any other Macon cousins who are interested -- I had heard a while back that there was evidence that Andrew Strain's wife was, in fact, Mary Wilson, and not Mary Reed, as many researchers had originally thought. However, I hadn't been able to track down anyone with definitive information (not that I tried very hard, I've had Messer and Kimsey fish to fry, lately<G>), and now I see you both listing Mary Wilson. Do either of you know what the substantiating evidence is for this? Or can you point me to a source that might have it? Many thanks if you can, and many thanks even if you can't. Regards -- Judy
