Pittman Sent: Tuesday, October 23, 2007 12:08 PM Subject: FW: Revolutionary War flags Hello, A museum in Williamsburg, VA, will publicly exhibit three regimental flags from the Revolutionary War for the first time in 227 years. They are the "colours" of the Virginia Third Regiment of the Continental Army commanded by Colonel Abraham Buford. These flags were taken as a spoil of war on 29 May 1780 at a site 10 miles east of present-day Lancaster, SC, by Lt. Col. Banaste Tarleton. They were retained in England by his descendants until sold last year for about $5 million. As you may know, Buford's Defeat was a defining moment in the Revolutionary War. The Virginians were not prepared and their attempts to surrender were not honored. Out of 350 men, 113 were killed and another 150 badly wounded. The brutality of the incident shocked Americans into strong anti-British sentiments. The DeWitt Wallace Decorative Arts Museum in Williamsburg, VA, will host the exhibit. It will continue for more that one year: 22 Dec 2007 through 9 Jan 2009. See the email below and attachments. Please share this information. As promised I've attached the Colonial Williamsburg press release about the exhibit. The attachment does not include photos, but I think the best ones can be found at the Sotheby's website, from several months ago when the flags were sold. Here is the link: http://www.shareholder.com/bid/downloads/news/20051111-179534.pdf I have also attached a map and directions on how to get to the Museums of Colonial Williamsburg, because we certainly want people to come see the flags. Museum tickets are $9 per adult -- more inclusive tickets can be purchased by anyone wishing to tour the Colonial Williamsburg historic area as well. Please let me know if anyone has further questions. Thank you again for your interest! Trish Balderson Manager, Museum Education The Museums of Colonial Williamsburg P.O.
