There has been a lot of work done on the Melungeon's including extensive DNA research. If you go to Google and put in just the name you will find an abundance of information. There is also a web site exclusive to Melungeon research. I first ran across this fascinating subject years ago when I happened upon a Genealogical Quarterly devoted to the Goins/ Gowen surname. I d not know if it is still published, but back copies are surely available.
