    3. The 1920 Federal Census for Gaston County, NC indicates Will (age 35) Bertha (age 10) & Lela (age 7) were living in House #172, family #274 of the Gastonia Township. Will was a carder in the cotton mill. Chances of a birth certificate for little Lela are slim. Though NC started keeping such records in 1913, it wasn't widely enforced. However, it is worth calling or writing the Register of Deeds office in Lincoln or Gaston County to see if there is a record. A quick glance at the 1930 census didn't turn up this family, but then I didn't do the in depth search you will certainly do. Looked thru my book of 1901-1936 marriage index for Lincoln County & found only one female Rogers, her name was Leona & the license date was 1929. Don't know if it would be her or not as she would have been ony 16 & the name is different. Don't have the Gaston County index. I am sooo at a brick wall !!! I don't know if you can help me or not but I am going to try. Let me start by telling you my mom's story!! My mom is 73 years old, She is my mom and my best friend all in one. I love her very much. When my mom was 2 years old her mother, Bertha Rogers Sisk (William F. and Cora Clanton Rogers daughter) died unexpectedly. She had just given birth 14 days earlier to Betty Jean Sisk. The year that Bertha was born was 1910. She was born in Lincoln County, North Carolina. Shortly after Bertha died, her husband "remarried" Bertha's cousin, Ruby Clanton!!!!! Ruby Clanton did not like Bertha and so she forbid Bertha's children (4 of them at that time) to ever mention Bertha's name around the house. As my mom was growing up she heard that Bertha had a younger sister named Liela. (I am not sure of the spelling but it sounds like it is spelled that way.) Lela would have been born after 1910 because Bertha was born then. In about 1920, Bertha's mom, Co! > ra Clanton Rogers, was admitted to "The State Hospital" in Morganton. I am not sure of the exact date. But I think that she was listed as a "occupant" and living at that hospital in the census of 1920. So that means that Little Lela was very young when all this happened and we think that someone either adopted little Leila or someone just took her in when her mom went in the hospital because we did not find her in a census in 1920 of Lincoln County. At this time all I know is her maiden name was Leila Rogers. > > Now the big part. I was doing some research trying to find out where this lady was. My mom would be sooooooooooo happy to know where she is buried. BUT!!!! There is a "living Rogers" listed as a child of William F. and Cora Clanton Rogers on a website, go here RootsWeb's WorldConnect Project: Sons of Solo... . As you can see, the information was just placed in the website in 2002. That means that :Leila is alive!!! Or may still be!!! Is there any way that you can get hold of the birth records and see if there was a child born between William F. Rogers and Cora Clanton Rogers anytime after 1910????? I would sooooo much appreciate it!!! My mom would bust with excitement. She has had a hole in her heart for 73 years now and I would like for her to meet her mom's sister before she dies!!! Please, if you can not help me, can you refer me to someone who can???? I would be so grateful !!!!!' > I hope to hear from you soon!! > Linda Haas > > > ==== NCLINCOL Mailing List ==== > ==== LINCOLN Co., NC Mailing List ==== > Sharing information on Historic Lincoln Co., NC > For further info, see www.rootsweb.com/~nclincol/nclincoln.htm > Our thanks to RootsWeb for hosting this list and web page > >
