This question, which recently was on this mailing list, has arisen more than once because we all want to narrow down the specific area where our ancestors lived. I remembered that Robert C. Carpenter had responded to such a question but it took awhile to locate the message due to Rootsweb/Ancestry.com's creaky search engine. Robert C. Carpenter's insights regarding some districts are quoted below. If other list members have identified the district in which their ancestor lived, they are encouraged to share that information. It could be very useful to others because we sometimes have to depend on where neighbors lived in order to target our own folks. Kathy Gunter Sullivan. 22 September 2001, Catawba-West Mailing List Subject: Tax District 11 in 1790 Author: Robert C. Carpenter "Tax District 11 was in the eastern portion of present Gaston County. It probably included the present towns of Mt. Holly and Belmont and extended north as far as the Stanley Creek area. "For example, Burrell Wells and Richard Hanks lived near present-day Belmont. The Alexanders and Abernathys and Jo. Dickson lived near Mt. Holly and north of Mt. Holly. It is possible that this district extended as fa north as the present town of Lucia which is in the extreme northeastern corner of Gaston County near the Lincoln County line. Thomas Rhyne and Sam Rankin lived just east of present Stanley. Rhyne's home still stands there. "Zach Spencer lived near Spencer Mountain. I do not know which side of the South Fork River he lived on. I originally suspected that all names listed were east of the South Fork and therefore between the South Fork and Catawba River. I am not so sure. Hugh Barry lived near present Cramerton. Cramer Mountain was originally known as Barry/Berry Mountain. "I hope this has been helpful. Robert Carpenter." 22 September 2001, Catawba-West Mailing List Subject: Tax District 5 Author: Robert C. Carpenter "It is my opinion that District 5 is in present Catawba county. It appears to be in the northern most portion of present Catawba County with the Catawba River being its northern boundary. It most likely included many persons who attended St. Johns Lutheran Church. "for example, the Sypes (Sipes) and Peter Plunk were on Lyles Creek. Isaac Lowrance, the Sigmans, Simon Jonas, and the Fullbrights were all from this area. Other Catawba County names include the Deals, Younts, Bolicks, Ikers (Eher). Most of the names in this district are German names. "I hope this is helpful. It is only my opinion. Robert Carpenter."
Kathy and List, I had forgotten about that post of a number of years ago. Quite a long time ago I presented a program at the request of the deceased Mark Smith. The gist of the program dealt with locating the areas of each of the Companies in the 1790 census by geography. This research had begun with Curtis Mosteller. He shared some of that research with me and I have added to it. In addition I pursued locating Germans in these Companies. I used my knowledge of German surnames and the research of Lorena Eaker in German Speaking Peoples . . . for the basis of this research. I put it aside after that program. I still have that research filed away. If I may assist others, I will consult my previous research which I had forgotten if it had not been for Kathy Sullivan.
