    2. This is a Message Board Post that is gatewayed to this mailing list. At this point, and of course that is subject to change, I have William Washington Welch as the son of Thomas Welch, son of John Welch and Elizabeth Whiteside Welch of PA. John migrated to Anson Co, NC in the 1750's. The area where they lived later became Tryon and later Lincoln Co, NC. John did own some land that was in Rowan Co and it was sold a few years after his death. This Thomas was the brother of Tory Major Nicholas Welch. They, Nicholas and Thomas, are the 1/2 siblings of William Welch who ended up in Pendleton Dist, and who was an early settler of Giles and later Lawrence Co, TN. (William's mother Margaret Irving Welch Whitley goes to KY and later Lawrence Co, TN where she died in 1818.) In 1789 and again in 1795, the Welch siblings and 1/2 siblings sell off the remainder of John Welch's land in Lincoln Co, NC. Those 2 deeds say that all the parties except for Margaret and her then husband George Whitley are living in 96th (1789) and Pendleton Dist, SC (1795). I don't ever find Thomas in the SC censuses, but I do find him (I believe) in Lincoln Co, NC - 1790 Lincoln Co, NC census: – image 6 Thom Welsh 1 1 5 - father Nic Welsh 1 2 3 - son Image 5 Wm Welsh 1 0 4 - son 1800 Lincoln Co, NC – image 60 Thomas Walsh – 3 - - 1 - 2 – 1 Thomas Walsh, Sr - - - - 1 - - 4 – 1 William Washington Welch supposedly moved from NC and "bought and sold land in Pendleton Dist, SC. At some point he gave his father power-of-attorney and moved to the Cape Girardeau Co, MO area where he died." I'm not so certain that those transactions were this William Welch. There are several William Welches there during this time period including his Uncle William Welch. Would like to see that POA. Anyway, I think that WW was in KY by 1801. His daughter Sarah says in the 1850 census that she was born in KY c 1801. None of the other children seem to have lived long enough to tell us where they were born. In 1795 William Washington's brother Nicholas sells land in Lincoln Co, NC. Witnesses were "Anne and Forney Green Norman." I believe that his may be the Nicholas Welch who married Margaret "Peggy" Hembree, daughter of David Hembree and lived in Pendleton Dist, SC. Peggy is dead by 1810 and most of their children end up in Lawrence Co, TN near William Welch and his wife Elizabeth Jane Hembree. Nic and Peggy's daughter Hettie / Hetty married William's son Thomas. According to Larry Petrisky, who has spent years researching the Hembree family, Elizabeth Jane was first married to an unrelated John Welch and had several children before her marriage to William Welch c 1799. Therefore she is not the mother of William's children. Her children stayed with John and her tribe. Back to William Washington - his son William C Welch is found age 15 - 20 with a 20 - 30 year old female and a boy and girl both under 5 in the 1830 Cape Girardeau, MO census. There is another William Welch listed on that page with 2 males 30 - 40. I haven't checked into them. William C is listed among numerous Bolins and a Samuel Sifford. Bolin is a name associated with the Hembree family and the neice of Samuel Sifford married Solomon Jackson a bastard son of "Old John" Hembree who was the father of Elizabeth Jane Hembree. That’s where I’m at this moment. It’s subject to change, but there seems to be a pretty good thread here. Marcia McClure

    3. Marcia, Concerning Nicholas Welch and family, was this Welch family Quaker? Do you know their religion? Was Nicholas Welch, the Tory, an exception or were other Welches Tories as well? I am researching later German settlers west of the Catawba River in present Lincoln County, NC and find that Nicholas Welch sold to many Dunkers, Church of the Brethren. I have often wondered if he held some of their religious views. Any help would be appreciated. 3. Robert and Marcia: These surnames appear in Cape Girardeau Co., MO right after 1800-1820 or so. One of the Welches and Levi Norman married into the Peter Crites (son of Davault) family. I think there is a Hembree Chapel Church in Cape Co., too. That's a name I haven't researched! If you log onto the Stoddard Co. MO Gen. Society and the Stoddard Co. rootsweb message boards page you will find several people there working on these families. Also the Sifford family. There is also a Sifford website too. Goodspeeds SE MO History could help too. I could have helped before my computer crashed, taking all my drives, but lost all of my email addresses. Was building it back when the motherboard went out and lost what I had recovered. Just got it back last week end and haven't had time to do anything about it again. I'm glad to see 2007 go. It hasn't been a good year for me and my family. Surely 2008 will be better! At the moment everyone is on their feet for which we're grateful. Hope Everyone has had a Blessed Christmas and will have a great and prosperous New Year. Robert Carpenter wrote: > Marcia, > > Concerning Nicholas Welch and family, was this Welch family Quaker?
