Joyce, Thank you for the reference you provided. In this case, Elias' widow would have needed to return to NC after the Elias in my direct line died between 1840 and 1850 in what is now Saline County, IL. It is possible, but I'm not sure how likely. I will check this further to see what I can find. Thank you again. I appreciate your help. Perhaps this could be of some help. In William Sherrill's Annals of Lincoln County, page 409/410, he quotes a Mrs. T. H. Hoover in a sketch of Jacob Rhyne. The sketch states that Jacob Rhyne I had a son, Jacob Rhyne II, born 1740-1745 and died 1825; married to Marie Elizabeth Best. They had 9 children, one of whom was a Jonas Rhyne, born 1789, married to Annie Kiser. Among Jonas and Annie's 12 children was a Jacob K. Rhyne who married Barbara Costner and who "lived a short time in Lincoln County near Reepsville on a farm now owned by the widow of Cousin Elias Rhyne." Dear Alice, There are many references to James McAfee in the following books: "Deed Abstracts of Tryon, Lincoln & Rutherford Counties, NC: 1769-1786 and Tryon County, NC, Wills & Estates" by Brent H. Holcomb, Southern Historical Press, "Tryon County, NC, Minutes of the Court of Pleas and Quarter Sessions, 1769-1779," by Brent H. Holcomb, SCMAR, and "Tryon County Documents 1769-1779", by Kathy Gunter Sullivan, published by The Genealogical Society of Old Tryon County. I did not have the time to look them all up, but if you have access to these books, I think they might be of a help to you. Robert, I have ordered the book by Dr. Rhyne. I sent my order last Friday and am looking forward to receiving it soon. I'm glad that you brought up the fact that it is a more current history. Any information that you could find on Elias Rhine would be greatly appreciated. I have found him in census records in 1820 in TN and then in IL in 1830 and 1840, but nothing prior to that. Dear Barbara Rhine Crain, I would also suggest that you purchase the Rhyne research of Dr. Howard Rhyne from the Gaston County Museum. This book was printed by the Gaston Lincoln Genealogical Society and is a more current history of the Rhyne family as delineated through many sources not used by Hoffman in Our Kin. I have seen the Elias Rhine or Rine in the records. I am not sure that he directly relates to the Jacob Rein who is detailed in Our Kin. The Dr. Howard Rhyne book explains how, Martin Rein, brother of Jacob Rein, died in Pennsylvania and that his family came to North Carolina. His most famous son was Thomas Rhyne who built a brick house in 1799 which is still standing. I will search some of my records to see if I can come up with anything on Elias Rine. Susan, I do have the connection between the HOYLE-RHYNE families that you mention below. I have also considered the possibility that Elias went by another name in NC and then used his middle (or first) name when he moved first to TN and then to IL. It would answer many questions that I have. I do have 11 children for Jacob RHYNE and Maria Elizabeth BEST. However, I have asked the sources that I had for further verification that Elias is one of their children and have received no answer. Of the five children that I have for Elias RHINE, the first 4 listed their place of birth as NC in Census Records. The youngest had TN as hers. I found Elias RHINE in Smith Co., TN in 1820, but I cannot find him prior to that. Because the youngest's birthdate was about 1814, that does agree with the later census records. I do have the phone number for the Gaston County Museum, but they were closed today. I do intend to contact them and see if the book is available there. I look forward to hearing from you. Hi, Barbara I am not researching the Rhyne family but am researching the Hoyle family in Gaston County. The Hoyle and Rhyne families are somehow connected. I have several research books about Gaston County Families. In Our Kin by Laban Miles Hoffman: Jacob Rhyne married Maria Elizabeth Best, daughter of Bastian Best. Their children were: Michael Rhyne who married Catharine Hoffman, daughter of Jacob Hoffman, 2nd. Martin Rhyne who married Jane Freeman (possibly nee Holland) in 1797 Jacob Rhyne who married Elizabeth Hoffman, daughter of Jacob Hoffman, 2nd Philip Rhyne who married Cath. Totherow, daughter of Jno. Totherow and Susan Chambers Adam Rhyne who married Peggy Best, daughter of Peggy Best Jonas Rhyne who married Anne Kiser in 1812 David Rhyne who married Anne Carpenter in 1816 Thomas Rhyne who married Katie Rudisill, sister to Gentleman Jonas Rudisill; and Eliz. ____, in Mo. Sarah Rhyne who married Samuel Withers in 1812 I did not see the son you are looking for. I purchased this book from the Gaston County Museum, Dallas, NC- http://www.gastoncountymuseum.org You might contact them to see if it is still available, if interested. It has a lot about the Rhyne and Best families. There is a book-Marriage Bonds of Tryon and Lincoln Counties, NC abstracted and indexed by Curtis Bynum, 1929. It is available from the Broad River Genealogical Society. http://www.rootsweb.com/~ncbrgs/publications.htm There are a lot of Rhyne marriages listed from about 1797 to about 1857. I did not find a marriage for Elias. Could he have gone by another name? There is Michael Rhyne who married Barbara Weathers in 1809. Let me know if I can be of any help. Good luck with your search. I would be most interested in any information in re: BEST.? Please email me privately with your direct lineage.? My ancestor is Louisa Best Mitchum, b. abt. 1812 or 1814, wife of Logan Mitchum, b. abt. 1805 in Lincoln County, son of Nathaniel Mitchum, 1780-1838 and Jemima Reynolds Mitchum. We have been unable, despite more than a quarter century's research, to learn either parents or siblings of Louisa Best Mitchum.? Thank you. In the meantime, are you a direct descendant of this line? If so, from which son of Jacob and Maria? I have just started work on this generation of the family because I am now living fairly close to Gaston County (at least a lot closer than I have previously) and I am hoping to do some in-person research there in the near future. As I stated in my reply to the List, many of the books about this family and this line in particular are now out of print and I would like to see the books to verify my information as much as possible. I just joined this list and I am hoping to find further details regarding the RHINE/RHYNE family that resided in Lincoln/Gaston Counties in the early 1800's. My direct ancestor was Jacob RHYNE (born about 1753 in PA and died 1825 in Lincoln Co., NC). He was married to Maria Elizabeth BEST (born about 1757 and died date unknown in Gaston Co., NC). One of their sons was Elias RHINE, born about 1778 in NC and died in Gallatin/Saline County in IL between 1840-1850. His wife was Barbary ? who died before 1834. Elias and Barbary were likely married in North Carolina and lived there until they moved to TN between 1810-1814. Also, how early were marriage records/bonds kept in this county? Any information on this line would be greatly appreciated. Thanks, Barbara RHINE CRAIN
