But these Ballards didn't seem to marry into my "KIDS" family (the "s' is not plural). The people using the KIDD spelling were a different family not related to William Sidney Kids b. 1834 (buried at Bethel with wife Julia Ann Howard) or his siblings. It seems they were not from England as Sidney's grandfather was. Sidney's children did change their name to KIDD in the 1900s.I think they just got tired of being called Kidd without the "s" and having to correct everybody. I don't know if his brothers' children finally did the same or not. I am beginning to think that the BALLARD connection is with William Tucker's (b. abt.1830) family. His wife Nancy Kids was Sidney Kids' older sister. It could be that the Ballard marriage was in Virginia before the Tuckers moved to Lincoln, Co. NC Thanks again - I'm going to check out your new book when I get to NC. - Julie Cline Important Note: The author of this message may not be subscribed to this list. My email is jhcline@msn.com. William Sidney KIDS b.1834 parents are evidently William and Mary "Polly" Childers Kids of Lincoln Co. The next Kids generation back is the one who came from England to,presumably, Virginia first in the late 1700s.(I know nothing about the CHILDERS.) The BALLARD connection to my family, I now believe, comes throught the TUCKER family. William Tucker b. abt. 1830 who married Nancy Kids may have had a mother or grandmother who was a Ballard. Nancy Kids(-Tucker) and Wiliam Sidney Kids were brother and sister. But I am directly realated to BOTH through different grandparents. My maternal grandparents were what's called "first cousins once removed". Thanks again for anything that touches on or confirms the above. - Julie Cline Important Note: The author of this message may not be subscribed to this list. I have, just this morning, found the maiden names of early women (and sometimes their parents) that might have taken me ages to find. Also thanks so much for nice CSA write-up with William SIDNEY Kids. I had no idea where he was captured - evidently Gettyburg. I cried. He lived to be 92 and my mother dearly loved him. And I have several pieces of his furniture (even some that he made) and his CW pension papers. My research shows that he was sent to a Fort in North Dakota and served in the Union Army for the last year of the war. His tales /letters of the trip back to NC are amazing. Another "thank you" for correcting my Aunt Gertrude's (GERTIE) nickname. She was dignified woman who would not want to be called "Girlie", even in the "afterlife". I know most errors have merely been passed to you by others. As I mentioned ealier, there are other names in the family that are wrong. Even though these is under the category of relatives/info on those buried at Bethel, it would be nice to have it corrected since it is on line now. It affects at least the grave info of :William Sidney Kids, Julia Ann Howard-Kids, Dellinger-Infant son of William W. and "Brenda" T. Kids-Dellinger, and Carl Clifton Whitener. 1- "Brenda" Theodosia Kids-Dellinger -the first name is actually BERNADA 2- J.M. Davis Kids - There is no such person. J.M. Davis is the husband of Mary Jane Kids-Davis, not a child of the Kids-Howard family. 3- "Airley" Kids - Uncle ARY's name (Airy, Airey) might get spelled several ways, but never with and "L" in it. He changed his name to KIDD as an adult, by the way. 4- Sadie EUSTACE Kids ( my grandmother) married a WHITENER, not Whitner. 5- The Kids-Howard union produced no one named Julia Kids Ritchie. That is my grandparents' daughter who married a Ritchie. Her middle name was Kidd - Julia Kidd Whitener-Ritchie, daughter of Eustace Kids and William A. Whitener. 2. I do not believe that Ancestry.com is an affiliate of the LDS Church...Agnes Cloninger Thank you, Agnes...you have put my mind at rest. And many others have offered very good reasoning for having paid genealogy on the internet as well. Thanks all. This may not be what this list is for, but my concerns were genealogy related, and now, I believe, I can proceed without any further worry. Thanks. In keeping with our rules...does anyone have a clue as to where Absalom Bonham is buried? There's not a record anywhere. Thanks. Brownie MacKie In a message dated 3/11/2008 9:55:08 P.M. If not, please tell me! Thanks. > > Brownie I live not far from Salt Lake City and used to spend a week there in the library twice a year. I also have made use of the services of Ancestry. com - a membership is a lot less expensive than a trip to SLC, but not nearly so comprehensive. I find that Ancestry.com is very convenient to have here in my house now that I can no longer travel. What is expensive and what is not is a relative thing, it does cost a good deal of money to provide the service that Ancestry does, and like myself or any one else, the choice of how we want to use our money is a very private matter. It cost me a whole lot more to spend a week in SLC than have an Ancestry membership - one need not have the entire package. Yes the Family History Library is gradually getting their collection on line - and I am one of the extractors. This chore can be undertaken by anyone - they did not ask me what my religious preferences were when I signed up any more than they do at the door of the library or any of the FH Centers. I do not believe that Ancestry.com is an affiliate of the LDS Church. They do not advertise the same scope of records as one will find in the Library nor do they have the same software for sale. In fact the LDS Genealogy software can be downloaded free and Family Tree Maker offered by Ancestry.com is a bit pricy. I have always owned a MAC and so use different software. When I began I entered all info by hand on paper, software is a Godsend. We all should share our efforts with whomever needs the information, no matter how hard we worked to find it or how precious it is to us. Let us never lose sight of the fact that because someone in the past saw to it that information was preserved we are able to enrich our understanding of our ancestors. The information does not belong exclusively to us. The LDS Church, no matter if we hold with their teachings or not, has been hugely responsible for the preservation of many millions of records which they share with us freely and with great grace. Please let us not look a gift horse in the mouth, everyone works for a profit one way or another, otherwise we could not indulge ourselves by embracing this expensive little hobby. I have seldom purchased anything that has given me more entertainment or personal pleasure than this fascinating way to waste time. Sorry to be so wordy - I will shut up now and go quietly back to my corner. 2. I'm thrilled at the idea of the LDS bringing more of their records to the internet. Before we jump too hard on the various companies charging for their services, we older researchers need to recall how it was. I for one used to practically live in the LDS family search room in Mississippi until I relocated to North Carolina. Although I am Baptist, I was a volunteer in the Family Search room. When my husband and I relocated I had to revert to my home micro-film/fiche reader, (which is now stored in the garage until I take it to the town library). I was willing to pay a fee to find the records, at my fingertips on the computer. It cost me much less this way. It freed up my time. The results are fast and I have more time to spend with the grand babies. I will be very happy to have a free service but the companies that charge a fee have done us a great service. I'm a subscriber. Some of the companies that charge a fee, also offer a lot of free access. Lynne D. Miller **************It's Tax Time! Get tips, forms, and advice on AOL Money & Finance. 3. Many of us on these genealogy lists have used the LDS Family History Centers, so it came as good news to me that they are in the beta stages of testing a site that will eventually have all their records on it. You can actually use it and help test it. It's FamilySearch.org . Knowing the LDS church, they will NEVER charge for this service. Experience in the History Centers should testify to that. I quit Ancestry.com last year when I heard about the LDS site. I can be patient while they get it up and running. 2. I'm not sure, and I have to be honest about that, but my instincts tell me that it's a probility. It simply adds up. All the companies are located in Utah for one. That should be a first clue. There was no Generation Network fifteen years ago, when I began my research, but Ancestry.com came out fairly soon after that. "The Generation Network" has suddenly emerged the past year. So which came first? The chicken or the egg? :-) I think it's a given that Ancestry, Family Tree, TGN, and all are owned by LDS.
