1] Your great-grandmother Cora Rogers was still listed as an inmate at NC State Hospital for the Insane [now Broughton Hospital] in the 1930 census--listed as 41 yo, married, born NC. 2] Do you have any idea if the daughter that you are seeking--Lela/Lila--could have been living with her father William F. Rogers in that time period? 3] You may be able to contact the courthouse in Lincolnton, NC, for your Lincoln Co. info and obtain birth certificates for a fee---they may copy and mail to you, I think, if you call and ask them. Also, death certificates and marriage licenses. I have done this myself in person, not sure about over the phone, however. [Ditto with Morganton and Burke Co. info re: your Great Grandmother if she died in Broughton.] Good Luck! Hey!! I am sooo at a brick wall !!! I don't know if you can help me or not but I am going to try. Let me start by telling you my mom's story!! My mom is 73 years old, She is my mom and my best friend all in one. I love her very much. When my mom was 2 years old her mother, Bertha Rogers Sisk (William F. and Cora Clanton Rogers daughter) died unexpectedly. She had just given birth 14 days earlier to Betty Jean Sisk. The year that Bertha was born was 1910. She was born in Lincoln County, North Carolina. Shortly after Bertha died, her husband "remarried" Bertha's cousin, Ruby Clanton!!!!! Ruby Clanton did not like Bertha and so she forbid Bertha's children (4 of them at that time) to ever mention Bertha's name around the house. As my mom was growing up she heard that Bertha had a younger sister named Liela. (I am not sure of the spelling but it sounds like it is spelled that way.) Lela would have been born after 1910 because Bertha was born then. In about 1920, Bertha's mom, Co! ra Clanton Rogers, was admitted to "The State Hospital" in Morganton. I am not sure of the exact date. But I think that she was listed as a "occupant" and living at that hospital in the census of 1920. So that means that Little Lela was very young when all this happened and we think that someone either adopted little Leila or someone just took her in when her mom went in the hospital because we did not find her in a census in 1920 of Lincoln County. At this time all I know is her maiden name was Leila Rogers. Now the big part. I was doing some research trying to find out where this lady was. My mom would be sooooooooooo happy to know where she is buried. BUT!!!! There is a "living Rogers" listed as a child of William F. and Cora Clanton Rogers on a website, go here RootsWeb's WorldConnect Project: Sons of Solo... . As you can see, the information was just placed in the website in 2002. That means that :Leila is alive!!! Or may still be!!! Is there any way that you can get hold of the birth records and see if there was a child born between William F. Rogers and Cora Clanton Rogers anytime after 1910????? I would sooooo much appreciate it!!! My mom would bust with excitement. She has had a hole in her heart for 73 years now and I would like for her to meet her mom's sister before she dies!!! Please, if you can not help me, can you refer me to someone who can???? I would be so grateful !!!!!' I hope to hear from you soon!! Hi- In the various estate papers of Nicholas Frey is found Conrod Burns' petition in Rowan Co., NC re his wife Hannah Frey Burns (dau. of Nicholas) and her extra marital escapades with Bostian Cline, Jr. of Rowan Co., NC (into GA and back) dated 10 Oct 1774. On this document is the signature as a witness, Francis Palmer who had to have been born way before 1755. One of the other witnesses appears to be Peter Moll (1744-1831). I already know of a William Palmer b. 1777, wife, Sarah Rankin of Rowan Co., NC and children who ended up in Wilson Co., TN, but I don't know who his parents were. To back of a little bit, I am descended from Parmenas Palmer and Mary Ann Draper of Lunenburg Co., VA. Of their sons, William m. Ann Spears and ended up in Union Co., SC as did son, John Thomas, Sr. (my direct ancestor) who. m. Mary Brett who begat Rev. John Thomas Palmer, Jr. b. 1766, who served in the American Revolution as a substitute for his father. Another son, Joshua also went to Union Co., SC. And there were others into Spartanburg, SC area. Parmenas Palmer's father was Robert Palmer and whose youngest son, George (Parmenas' brother) died in Buncombe Co., NC in 1731. It appears that in this generation of sons of Robert Palmer that there was a lot of running from southern VA into NC and SC and back and forth across borders right before the Revolutionary War. HELP! Any insight will be greatly appreciated to find out where Francis Palmer fits into this bunch if he does at all. Ann Propst, Brevard, NC

This is your last week to have an opportunity to save $10.00. Until April 30, 2004, the committee will accept orders at $52.50 including tax. After April 30, 2004, the cost of the book will increase to $62.50 including tax. Order now to save $10.00. If you want your book mailed directly to your home, rather than picking it up from a designated place, you should include an additional $7.00 for postage and handling. It has been learned that many county residents plan to purchase their Heritage book when it comes out. However, the book committee wishes to encourage all residents to order the book in advance. Not only will this save you money, it will insure that everyone that wants a book will get one. (Often the books sell-out immediately after publication!) The Cleveland County Heritage Book, Volume II will be a storehouse of family heirloom pictures and nostalgic reading for everybody with interest in our county. Order forms are still available at Broad River Genealogical Archives, Cleveland County Memorial Library, Cleveland County Register of Deeds and other various businesses. Or visit the Book Committee's website: http://home.earthlink.net/~srapa/index.htm If you have questions, call Nancy Hughes at 704-481-0228 or Ned Cash at 704-484-9396. Thanks, Betty-will do! Each time I see these little "goodies" I post them, hoping they will help. Ann Propst, Brevard, NC -----Original Message----- From: Betty K Price [mailto:[email protected]] Sent: Wednesday, April 21, 2004 10:43 PM To: [email protected] Subject: Re: [TransylvanCoGenList] Kuykendalls - to Ann and Doyle Ann, thank you for forwarding this message to our attention. Jeanne Hall, I have been told, is the daughter of James Hall. Nothing more was known of him. It's interesting to read that he was killed by Indians in North Carolina and that Jeanne was raised as an orphan. That is new to me but than that is nothing un-ordinary. I have not attempted to research the Hall family and can add nothing further regarding her parents. Jeanne Hall married 27 June 1802 in Lincoln Co. NC to Capt Jesse Kuykendall. I have a copy of their marriage bond which appears to be only half of the bond. This was received from the N C Archives. Listed with him on the Bond is Nicholas Chapman. Jesse is also found as Jesse Young Kuykendall, Sr. He was born ca 1775 in probably old Tryon Co. NC (later Craven District SC) and died 1834 in Jackson Co. TN. He is the son of Peter Kuykendall. His mother died before his father based on Peter's will written 17 February 1783 and probated May 1783 (Will Book 1) while residing in Washington Co. NC (now Tennessee) naming his brother Abraham Kuykendall as Executor of his estate. His mother's name is suggested to be Mary Hampton, daughter of Noah Hampton based on the name of Noah Hampton Kuykendall passed down in the family. Proof has yet to be found to my knowledge. Abraham settled the estate and returned to Rutherford Co. NC bringing the youngest children of Peter with him as evidenced by their marriage records in Lincoln and Rutherford Counties NC. Jesse evidently earned his Commission as Captain during the War of 1812 but I have not followed up on this information. I have other bits and pieces of information found in various places which I have not verified. My advice is to view the Kuykendall genforum.genealogy.com and search for questions and answers which have been posted by others. Will you please forward this to the proper List. Betty K. Hardin was arrested Monday night, for that day appropriating to his use without leave or license, sundry bags of flour, oats, hams, &c., from the store of Capt. Simpson, and brought before Squire Burnett. Admitting his guilt, he was ordered to jail, failing to give bond for his appearance at court. When nearing the prison, on reflection he concluded to give leg bail, and knocking his conductors down with a sudden jolt, he changed front to rear at double quick and made his escape in the darkness. Several shots were fired at him but failed to bring him down. [from th Lincoln Press] Capt. Micheal Hoke, formerly of this place, was married in Dakota Territory to Miss Kitty Jones, of Simms, Dakota, on Feb. 22d. Mr. P.S. Some hands were burning off the brush on Capt. S.S. Ross's plantation about three miles from town when the girl's dress caught fire and she was burned to death befre any assistance could be given. The cry of fire was in all directions on Thursday afternoon and immediately every one was running to render what assistance they could. The smoke house adjoining the dwelling of Mr. A. M. Gilmer was in flames, and threatened to destroy considerable property. The household furniture was removed into the street, but fortunately but the exertions of a great number the flames were gradually subdued without any serious damage being done. [from the Black's Review] Miss Kuykendall, who had charge of a school in this town, resigned her position to return to her home in Knoxville, Tenn. Mrs. Stephens, who now has charge, is making quite a success. Her school is increasing in numbers every day. Joseph D. Gault was married on the 27th of February to Miss Mattie Hopson. A party was given the young couple at the residence of James S. Lucas and at the home of Mr. Hopson. from Last Week in the State. Wilson & Robinson's saw mill near Newton was washed away last week. The dam broke and swept away everything. Loss about $1000. ---------------------------------------------------------------------------- -- Transcribed and posted by Lynn E.
