She is listed in her father's will in 1818 as "my daugher ... Barbara Harmon". I am trying to find out which Harmon she was married to. The early marriage records of Lincoln County have not been of any help.

It covers from the third quarter of the 1700's to the middle or late 1800's. I'll make a note and check the next time I'm at Iredell's (probably Thursday or Friday of this week and see if I can find you the information.

Daniel Asbury was a circuit rider, he would make it down to Buncombe, and Hayward Co.'s NC. I am not sure just where all he went, He preached in brush arbors, and homes. I am more familiar with my line, but I am sure there are many out there who know about your Abernathy-Asbury line. You need to research her Father Rev. Daniel Asbury, now that is an interesting story. Good luck, and if I can help email me.
It appears that Harold Gosnell and Susie Houk need to talk to one another about this, they have both replied to me but I am not a part of this equation. I believe Susie may be able to help Harold solve his problem, at least she presents the clue that Daniel Asbury was a Rehoboth Methodist Minister in what is now Catawba County, and so in all probability, performed the marriage between his daughter Martha and her Abernathy husband. If Harold communicates with or visits the Lincoln Co Library and the Catawba Co. Library he may find what he wants. I live elsewhere so cannot help there. There is an Robert Abernathy will dated 8 Apr 1830 which names his children but not a wife. If it would be helpful I can provide the citations and an abstract. Good luck Agnes

That proves that he had a daughter Martha and that in fact she did marry a Abernathy. Ths LDS site list her as Elizabeth Jennins Asbury; they give: "Elizabeth Jennings ASBURY Event(s): Birth: 26 JAN 1793 Lincolnton, Lincoln, North Carolina Parents: Father: Daniel Asbury Family Mother: Nancy Jane Morris Marriages: Spouse: Robert Abernathy Family Marriage: 14 OCT 1808 Record submited by a member of the Church of the Lord Jesus Christ of the Latter Day Saints. Harold Gosnell I don't think that 15 was that uncommon for a girl to get married back then.

Daniel Asbury was a Methodist Minister, and started the still active Rehobeth Methodist Church in Catawba County. It was then Lincoln County. Daniel Asbury started as a Circuit Rider and formed the first Methodist Church west of the Catawba River. He and his wife Nancy Morris Asbury are buried at the above church. He came to this area from Virginia. His Mother was a Jennings before marriage. He did leave a will, probated In July, 1825. He mentions his three daughters Martha Abernethy, Susanna L. Wilkinson, and Letty Cornelius. His daughter Susannah Asbury is my line through her marriage to James Wilkinson, Jr. There is much information on this family at the Lincoln County Library, and Catawba County Library in Newton.

Where did they go from NC? Cab we help you find gravestones or some other record, like the wills of either her husband or her parents that might get you where you want to go. such records can be eaier to search than some more-or-less elusive church record. Her name as reported to you, Elizabeth Jinnings Asbury, suggests that her mother was also a Jinnings/Jennings rather than Jinnins. The confusion of having two names Martha and Elizabeth causes me to wonder if he married two different Asbury women, perhaps sisters. Are there any wills for this minister Rev. Daniel Asbury, and where did he ply his trade? This is all only guess work, and you may well have already considered these angles.

The LDS site list her as Elizabeth Jinnings Asbury (according to a Asbury researcher she was born 1793 in Lincoln Co., NC. She was also called "Betty" They are not listed in the Marriage bond books:someone sugested that they might have had a Church marriage w/o a marriage bond from the County since it cost so much. Harold Gosnell p.s. Martha Asbury was the d.o. Rev Daniel Asbury and Martha Jinnins.

There were a lot of churches in LC in 1808 as there are now. Could you narrow that down a little? Where in the County did they live? If you can pinpoint a place, there is a possibility those records might exist, but it would also be helpful to know what denomination we are talking about, again there was more than one. I checked the Lincoln Co. Marriages and they are not listed as having had a bond, but that does not mean there was no such a marriage.

Margaret died shortly after, and James Elcanah left the area. What is their daughter's name? Who raised her? Did she live to adulthood? Did she marry and have a family? Would appreciate any information!!!!!!!!!
