Help Please..... James Allen Arndt, a great-grandson of the Lutheran Pioneer Pastor in N.C., the Rev. John Gottfried Arends, was born April 29, 1871, at Newton, N.C. According to my Mother's Baptismal Certificate She was baptized by Rev. James Allen Arndt pastor of Bethel Lutheran Church, Iron Station, N.C. She was baptized at the home of her parents in 1899. I have not been able to find an exact location for the Bethel Congregation in Iron Station. The only possibility I have is the present Presbyterian Church Building which is still in use in Iron Station. When I was in the fifth grade in school we lived in Iron Station for about one year and attended church at the Presbyterian Church since at that time there was no Lutheran Congregation in the village of Iron Station. I know there were other families there who had also been brought up by Lutheran Families. My Mother attended the Stroup School House which was located southeast of Iron Station. She and her brothers and sisters walked about three miles to school every day. My Mother was the youngest child in the Plonk Family. My Grandmother Plonk along with her husband Jacob Cswell Plonk was given the Hovis Farm in order to take care of her mother. Since Mary Blanche Hovis was the only child of the third wife of her Father, All the other Children were very upset with the decision. Just in case you have information about any of the early churches located in this area of North Carolina I would be happy to see a copy of the information or know where I can find it in a publication. Any assistance would be greately appreciated. Pat C. Cloninger [email protected]

Classification: Query Message Board URL: http://boards.ancestry.com/mbexec/msg/an/iVB.2ACI/2356.4.1.1.1.4 Message Board Post: Pardon me for responding to an old message ( I do not often visit these message boards) but I just had to jump in here. I have a transcription of the will of Jacob Forney, dated 24 Jul 1803, in which he clearly lists his three sons and all 5 of his daughters by married name. It was not Christina Forney's sister Eliza, who married Judge John Henry Webb and whose descendants settled in Eutaw AL, but her neice, daughter of Peter and Nancy (Abernathy) Forney, whose given names were Frances Elizabeth. Jacob's sons-in-law (and wives) were: Abraham Earhart, wife Catherine John Young, wife Elizabeth David Abernathy, wife Christina John Abernathy, wife Susanna Robinson/Robertson Goodin, wife Eve. Of all of these, I have no data on John and Elizabeth (Forney) Young after their marriage. Apparently they left the state in search soon after, possibly to Habersham County GA, possibly further west. As for Otis' ancestor, it very much begins to appear that he may be a previously unidentified son of Joseph, son of David and Ann Turner Abernathy. There appears to be very little solid and non-contradictory data on Joseph; previously only one positively identified child: Betsy Tinnon, of Giles County TN. If Otis' circumstantial evidence is augmented by yet more data along the same vein as he's so far turned up, it could well be that his line could be reliably added to the Abernathy lineage of David Senior of Lincoln County. I think Otis may be very peeved with me, but my prodding has produced a greater effort on his part, with some interesting results.

Greetings everyone! I am still on the hunt for any information on the Murphy/Murphey in Lincoln Co. in the mid-late 1700s. Also Hannah McNamare? If anyone can tell me anything at all, I'd surely appreciate it. Where were they prior to NC . . . where did they journey to afterwards? I know my John married 1st Hannah McNamare in Lincoln Co., and 2nd) Lucy Hughes from McMinn County, TN. They were in Madison County, KY at one time, and John died in Estill County, Kentucky. John Murphy was born in NC in 1766. Many thanks, Crystal Murphy Owen County Murphy Descendant

Classification: Query Message Board URL: http://boards.ancestry.com/mbexec/msg/rw/iVB.2ACI/2369 Message Board Post: Maryville Times, (Blount Co. TN) Wednesday, February 4, 1891: "Obituary---Frances Best, daughter of David and Margaret Costner, was born August 24th, 1800, in Lincoln County, N.C. She was a member of a large family and the last to depart this life. In 1818 she was united in marriage with John M. Best, who was born and raised in Lincoln County, N.C. Ten children were born and reared by them, and all are yet living but two. In 1835 she and husband moved to Blount County, Tenn. Mr. Best became a good citizen, a noble and sincere Christian and was a kind father and devoted husband. In 1870 he passed from the land of dying to the land of living, leaving his aged wife to battle with the storms of life alone. She was converted in early life and joined the Lutheran Church and was a member until 1845, when she joined the M.E. Church and proved a consistent member. She was a faithful wife, a loving mother, a kind and obliging neighbor, a model Christian. Her gentle words and kind acts at home and abroad, to humanity endeared her to all with whom she came in contact. She was extremely industrious and could do some kinds of housework until a few months before she died, and retained her right mind most of the time. After her husband’s death she lived with her son and family, A.J. Best’s, and spoke a great deal before her death about their being so good and kind to her. She closed her eyes to the scenes of earth at eight o’clock Saturday morning, January 24th, 1891, aged ninety years and five months. Though Aunt Fanny (as she was generally called by that name) left many kindred and friends to grieve her loss, what could entice her to stay here with them any longer? What disappointments she has encountered in her long journey! What bright hopes blasted! What sorrows felt! How many loved ones she has covered in the grave---life’s flowers faded, the friends of her youth no more, and she was only waiting to go to them." Written by a friend, Lemy Carpenter, February 2nd, 1891.
