Owen Murphy, Will dated December 1775 - Lincoln Co., NC ......... he mentions "one shilling of Old England" .........would that indicate his origin?
Cindy, Not boring me at all. I want to absorb all the history and information I can. I hope to make it to Lincoln County sometime this coming Spring. So much of my Murphy history is there. I'm praying I can find it. Crystal Murphy
You are probably correct, Ulster's role in so many fleeing here is explained in a book called, "To Ulster's Credit" by Sam Allen. But then Dr. W. F. Marshall may have said it best in the title of his book, " Ulster Sails West" King James was a huge factor is so many leaving, apparently he not only was unkind to Protestants but he thought himself just as important as Jesus. Andrew Melville once said, " No earthly King is a lord or head of the Church of Scotland. There is King James, head of the commonwealth, and there is Christ. Jesus, the King of the Church, whose subject James the sixth is, and of whose kingdom, James the sixth is but a MEMBER." For this Andrew spent many years in the Tower of London. I hope I didn't bore anyone, I just think it's interesting to know why so many of our ancestors came here. ----- Original Message ----- From: <[email protected]> To: <[email protected]> Sent: Monday, December 06, 2004 10:06 AM Subject: [NCLINCOLN] Re: Calling ALL MURPHYs > This is a Message Board Post that is gatewayed to this mailing list. > > Classification: Query > > Message Board URL: > > http://boards.ancestry.com/mbexec/msg/rw/iVB.2ACI/2392.1 > > Message Board Post: > > Am not positive but sure enough to bet the farm that the Murphy's came from Northern Ireland, probably from the Ulster Plantations, as did so many of the other Irish families in and arround Lincoln county. Yes please, I would love more detail. Thanks so much. My great-great grandfather, John Murphy, was a Methodist Minister. He had a son, John, by his first marriage to Hannah McNamare(a) who was a Baptist Minister. I would love any info you have. Many, many thanks, Crystal Murphy

Here is a link for the Lincoln Co. newspapers known to be available. This is from the NC Newspaper Project, at the state archives and state library. I do not see any for the years that you are seeking. You might check other surrounding counties. http://statelibrary.dcr.state.nc.us/ncnp/linco.htm#Lincolnton The link for the NC Newspaper Project with links for all counties is as follows: http://statelibrary.dcr.state.nc.us/ncnp/counties.htm You probably have this info which would be found in NC Troops: Holden Stogner, resident of Gaston Co., occupation engineer, enlisted as a private 3/15/1862, and into Co. K, 49th NC infantry at the age of 38 on 4/21/1862. Died of wounds at Sharpsburg, MD, 9/17/1862. You probably can find out other info by looking at his confederate papers on microfilm. These are at the state archives in NC as well as other libraries in NC. Hope this helps! I am in the process of sending for this record, however, it has shown up in several of my searches. This John Murphy is my great-great grandfather - I am from his marriage to Lucy Hughes. I too am seeking any information on this John Murphy, his family, etc - as well as the other Murphys in Lincoln Co. Owen Murphy, Will dated December 1775, mentions wife Abigail, sons James & William, and grandson John. I am very intense on locating these Murphys, as I do wonder if this John, grandson of Owen, is the same John who married Hannah McNamare. I am considering a trip to Lincoln Co. in the Spring. I am searching for the parents of my great-great grandparents. Henry Robinson was born 1812 and died about 1883. He lived in Burke County, NC. He married Malinda Leonard in 1833 in Lincoln County, NC. They had ten children. Does anyone have these folks in their line? Thanks, Linda
Sorry that should have been David not Davis and I left the r off the end of Ramsour, can't spell tonight .
I have John ( Little John ) Ramsaur as his father, who was born Dec 5, 1791 and married Susannah Summy as his mother, I also have children Elisha J. Ramsaur born Aug 9, 1817 , and Max Ramsaur born 1823. And Vardrey McBee born Feb 18, 1821. Is any or all of this correct? Then if this is correct is there another son Jacob Hunter Ramsour born 1815. I have just contacted Bill Ramsaur again to help me straighten out my mess. He is off this line. Now he had the line coming off of Dietrich, Davis, John Ramsour Sr., John Ramsour Jr. But I have him coming off of Dietrich, Jakob, John ( Captain Gentleman) Ramsour, to John ( Little John) Ramsaur who married Susannah Summy. I couldn't get the dates to even come close the other way. Unless I have a John mixed up somewhere. With all these Johns anything is possible. Are there more siblings to Vardry McBee than the three I have above? HELP, Help Help, confused in Washington

William MacBee was born on 22 Oct 1704 in Prince George's County Md. He settled in Halifax County, Virginia about 1740 and married Susannah Vardry who was born about 1710. They had the following children: Robert Walters, Samuel, Elizabeth, Howard, Joannah, Mary Ann, Austin, Vardry, James and Mathias, all born between 1730 and 1740. Vardry McBee was born about 1735 in Halifax, Co., Virginia. He married Hannah Echols in Virginia, moved to North Carolina and was Constable in Tryon (now Mecklenburg) Co., N.C. in 1770. They settled in Spartanburg District, S.C., and belonged to the Society of Friends (Quakers), but renounced this faith when the Revolution began. Vardry became a captain of the militia. After the fall of Charleston, Capt. McBee joined the "Over the Mountain Men" in N.C. and captured a Tory fort three miles from his home. The battle of Cowpens, and the battle of Cedar Springs were fought within a few miles of his home. At one time he owned property in Limestone Springs, S.C. but lost that property after the Revolution. They moved to Sumner County, Tennessee where he died 1787. His wife, Hannah McBee moved to Kentucky with her son Silas. There is a land grant to her of 200 acres in Christian County, Kentucky, dated October 8th, 1799. They had the following children: William, Silas Leroy, Gannon(?) C., Vardry Echols, Lemuel, and two daughters; one who married Joseph Morris and one who married the brother of General Elijah Clarke. Vardry Echols McBee was born on 18 Jun 1775 in Spartanburg District, S.C. He moved to Sumner County, Tennessee with his family after the Revolution; then to Kentucky; in 1794. He went to Lincoln County, North Carolina, to learn the saddle business under his brother-in-law, Joseph Morris. While there he was married in 1804 to Jane Alexander, daughter of Col. Elias Alexander of Rutherford County. Vardry McBee was elected Clerk of Court of Lincoln County in 1815, an office he held for twenty one years; during which time his signature appeared on thousands of documents. In 1815 he bought several thousand acres in and around the present town of Greenville, South Carolina and in 1817 built a flour mill on his land; later erecting a paper mill, cotton and woolen factories. He returned to Greenville in 1836 and, in a remarkable expression of charity, donated sites to almost every church in the city. He died in Greenville, South Carolina, 23 January 1864; his wife died there March 13th, of the same year. Anyone visiting the city of Greenville can't help but notice McBee Avenue and Vardry Street, Named in honor of him. Close by Greenville is the town of McBee which is also named for this extraordinary gentleman.
