Dear folks, It has been a while since Paul Dellinger's copy of the Cleveland WPA Cemetery Census finally made it to the electronic stage. Ann Propst took my copy of that 4-inch thick binder of legal-size pages and turned it into electronic text. It is currently being transformed into the largest single source of Cleveland County cemetery data. Compiled by the Works Progress Administration (WPA) in 1939, it is a record of the census takers pen. There may be errors but this is a full transcript with no conjecture included, except specified explanations. Our first consideration is that folks have ease of use of a simple search engine. We wanted the user to have cut-and-paste ability so allowing direct data entry. And, we also wanted Ann to have something for her 3-month, non-stop transcription effort. James ABERNATHY took out a bond to marry Elizabeth CLORE on 04 Jan 1803 in Lincoln County, North Carolina. Did the CLORE family come to Lincoln County from Virginia? Was Elizabeth born in Virginia? James ABERNATHY and Elizabeth CLORE may have had a daughter Susannah who married Joseph CAMPBELL b NC, and all may have removed to Georgia, later Alabama. Can anyone confirm? Do you know anything about him? My Pierce family was farther East - in Bertie, Martin, Tyrell, Edgecombe, Johnston Chowan counties. However, I still haven't located a will or any probate record for my earliest known Pierce ancestor, Phillip Pearce/Pierce. I don't know an exact birth year or death year for him, but he was old enough in 1735 to sell land. I suppose it's possible he lived until 1807. In any case, I would love to get hold of an abstract of that will. Phillip married Martha Andrews, a daughter of Warren Andrews of Tyrrell County about 1760.
