EARLY CHURCHES WEST OF THE CATAWBA RIVER I am making a list of locations where the early settlers began to meet in order to provide them with their Religious needs. There is no doubt that as long as I work to attempt to cover all the individual Congregations and locations I may find another group that needs to at least be mentioned. There is no publication or listing that I have found which covers the early Lutheran and German Reformed Churches as they were formed in this area of western North Carolina. Chapter - 1. Beaver Dam - St. Marks , Crouse, N.C. Chapter - 2. Bethel Lutheran Church, Iron Station, N.C. Chapter - 3. White Haven, Lowesville, N.C.(1794) Chapter - 4. St. James Lutheran, North of Cherryville, Lincoln County. Chapter - 5. Luther's Chapel, on Highway 321 North of Lincolnton, N.C. Chapter - 6. Haas Church - St. James Lutheran Church, South East of Newton, N.C. The Reformed Members organized Grace Reformed Church in Newton, N.C. Chapter - 7. Old Salem, Catawba County, N.C. The Cemetery for this Church is located south of River Bend Road between Bethel Lutheran Church (Missouri Synod) and Highway NC 16 North of Conover. This location is just south of the Catawba River at the head-waters of Lake Look Out. Chapter - 8. Salem, North of Taylorsville, N.C. Chapter - 9. St. Luke's Lutheran, north of Kings Mountain, N.C. Chapter - 10. South Fork - St. Paul's Lutheran-Reformed, Newton, N.C.(1768) Chapter - 11. Concordia Lutheran, Conover, N.C. Chapter - 12. St. John's Lutheran, Conover, N.C. North of Conover, N.C. Thank you in advance for your assistance in this project. Pat C. Cloninger
Sandra, I noticed one of your surnames was Ichard and I am researching the Ikerd family from Lincoln County and some times I have found it spelled Ichard so I was wondering if you would tell me a little something about your family so I can see if we are researching the same ones? Thanks. Roberta Summers

Hi, In the 1790 Census, Cheraw District, SC is listed John Punch, age 16 or over, single, no slaves. Does anyone have access to the 1800 and 1810 censuses of SC to see if a John Punch or descendants might be listed? This John might be a son, brother or close relative of Thomas [Puntch] Punch 1755-1811 (wife Jane Hennon 1758-1841--her brother, William Hennon 1753-1824 also buried at St. Paul's) of now Newton, Catawba Co., NC & buried in Old St. Paul's Church Cemetery. The Puntch or Punch surname was rare at this point in time. Originally it is believed this family came from Holland per family stories. However, it has not been verified. This is my husband, Sid's maternal ancestry. Any help will be deeply appreciated on the early history of this family as to where, when, etc. they arrived in Colonial U.S. Thanks. Ann K. Write or call the Roane County, Tennessee, Register of Deeds to purchase the 1925 marriage record. You'll also have to do some census research for 1910 and 1920 (if you haven't already). I notice on the 1930 census that Charles O. Robinson Jr. is shown as born in Tennessee and both parents born Tennessee (could be a mistake as we all know from census research). Vernor, I checked an index to Lincoln County bastardy bonds and did not find one for a Charles Turner or for any Lay woman. The bonds are not complete, of course. The first order regarding the Lay children was on the January 1818 minute docket and read "Patsy Lays four [children]". The next order was the one you located in July 1818. I searched my transcription of the 1819 sessions, and did not find a mention. There "should be" some later mention of the children, but sometimes there simply isn't. You still need to read the later court minutes to be sure there isn't another item about the children. You could inquire at North Carolina State Archives for Lincoln County apprentice bonds for the Lay children. Guardian bonds are worth a try, too. You can e-mail your inquiry to [email protected] Send one inquiry for apprentice bonds and a separate inquiry for guardian bonds. Include your name and mailing address because that is how the Archives will respond. You know, of course, that being summoned to court about the children does not in itself mean the children were illegitimate. It only indicates that there is some doubt about Patsy Lay's abilitity to provide for the children. I gather your Elijah Lay was born 1800/1802? Did the family stay in Lincoln County? If "everyone" says something but how they know isn't stated, then they probably DON'T know. That means you'll have to do the digging yourself. I agree with Agnes' recommendations. Also, I would assemble all the censuses for the Ballards, Hawkins, and Miars/Myers, observing the changes in the households, and also observing the neighbors. I'd be looking at marriage records for Ballards and Miars/Myers to see who were their associates. I'd be looking at bastardy bonds, apprenticeships, county court minutes, wills, death records, deeds, tax lists, Heritage books, family histories, and anything else I could find to help put the family together. At that point, "everyone" will be asking for your advice on the family. A lot of this sort of thing went on, still does except it is considered neither a sin nor illegal these days. However, perhaps you have been searching in the wrong places - if as you say the Hawkins who returned to England really abandoned his wife and unborn son, this precludes the possibility that that son was a bastard child. You might want to take a look at the church records concerning this family. Katey married Ballard on or about 8 Mar 1821 (that date is actually the date the bond was issued and may or may not be the marriage date), her child was born in July. Could have been fathered by someone named Hawkins or could have been fathered by John Ballard. Do you know what church they might have attended? Sometimes there is a record of the birth along with comments. The place of their burial might give you a clue to the church they attended. If he was already established in the community, having been previously married and possibly with children, in all probability he continued to live in that place bringing his new wife along to live there also. Their church would have been nearby and usually had its own graveyard. It would also be interesting to know the names of the parents of both John Ballard and Katey Meiers, were there any Hawkins connected to those families? You probably have already searched for any Hawkins who lived in close proximity to the residence of John Ballard, but there may be a clue there if you have not. Hope something here helps and good luck - early research in the south can be a real trial. Agnes C.
