    3. Hi John, Great to hear from you! You seem to have a lot of info on Lanes :) I've only just found my gg-grandfather JOHN LANE's name. At least am about 95% sure its him. Before this, I didnt even know my gg-grandfather's name as even being John, since no one in the family knew. So i've been searching for months and months(off and on, I get discouraged easily *laugh*) The "DANNEL" i mentioned was a slave in JOHN LANE's household. Dannel's father had the same name below him on the 1860 census though he lived in another household(or alone) I guess was his father, he had same name and was older, in his 40's i believe and lists his race as black also. So maybe they were named after the DANNEL's if he worked for them earlier. I know they took names of the ones who had them sometimes. Two of the slave children in JOHN LANE's household were named Juley and Washington. Juley or Julia was also JOHN LANE's daughter's name, and Washington was his son's (my g-grandfather) George's middle name. I have a list of names i've been looking at trying to find John's father. There was Levin Lane i had written down, from Pender or New Hanover counties, but he wasnt in the right area. Also a will for GEORGE LANE 1808 lists him having a son James..sometimes James and John were used interchangeably...though if John was born about 1802-1806, his father would be pretty old then i guess...unless he died young...anyway, thanks for information...anything is helpful, since i have NO idea at this point who JOHN LANE's parents were...i only have John's wife's name as MARY, no maiden name..i looked some at JOEL LANE of Raleigh, but seems his family was pretty well known and seems there would be more information documented if JOHN was his descendent. Though my grandfather used to drive his wagon to Raleigh but no one in family knows why or if he visited anyone there. So maybe relatives there, i dont know. Thanks! 3. Tammi, I've seen the messages you have been posting recently, as well as the other messages that have been posted in return by others. I don't have any Lane connections myself, so I can't add any data to what you are finding about John Lane and his ancestors. But, I wondered how you concluded that "Dannel" and the others you named in the John Lane household of 1860 were "slaves." As I am interested in anything going on in Greene County during the 1700 and 1800's, I took a look at the 1860 Greene County Census, Bull Head District, Page No. 4. What I saw indicates that Dannel Artes, a free black male aged 40 and a ditcher by trade, lived alone in Household #27. Back in the Household #26, the John Lane household, in addition to the Lane family members, there were three free black males aged 17, 13, and 5 as well as three black females aged 12, 8, and 7, all with the last name Artes. In the previous Household #25, the Silas Bryant household, in addition to the Bryant family members, there were two mulatto males aged 16 and 14 with the last name Artes. None of these Artes, according to the 1860 census, were slaves in 1860. Had they not been free blacks or mulattoes, they would not have been listed in that census. So, the "Dannel" who went off to the Civil War with Christopher Lane was apparently black, but not a slave. (An alternate spelling of the name Artes is probably Artis. There are quite a few people with the last name of Artis in the area today.)
