    2. This is a Message Board Post that is gatewayed to this mailing list. Surnames: Harper Classification: Query Message Board URL: http://boards.ancestry.com/mbexec/msg/rw/QUB.2ACE/1045.1.1 Message Board Post: We are descendants of one of two young Harpers who came to America during a potato famine. They came on a cattle boat and settled around the area of Speed and Killquick near us. We have been told one married a Faithful family member but had no children. The other married and had many children. I live in Tarboro which is near there. More of our relatives say they were Irish than those who say they were English. In the Edgecombe County deed records, there is a David Harper of Norfolk County, Virginia. He died and their children became orphans in 1784. I proved he married Mary Manning of Norfolk County, VA because she was the mother of four boys with the same names--David, Robert, Reuben and James. The Manning family have their family names on www.familysearch.org There I found they had left more of their children in Norfolk County, VA. One was a William Harper. The Mannings had money and owned property in the Norfolk County, VA area. Our Harpers were poor, very dep! andable, hard working and some were carpenters. Some married women with money. My grandmother was a Fountain and wealthy. Our oldest cousin was told our Harpers came from the Norfolk, Virginia area. I still do not have proof of a connection but this family fits what we have been told. My oldest uncle was James Richard Harper, Sr. Before my father and aunt died , they told us our Harpers were Irish. When we went to London, England, I looked in the telephone book and did not find Harpers. There were many in Scotland when we went there. My grandfather, Franklin Harper, was the son of Stephen H. Harper. We think the H. stands for Henry, but have no proof. Many in our family have researched and died but never found out who Stephen H. Harper's parents were. He married Nancy Hainey, then Mahala Morgan. Anything on the internet about them is what I put there. They were born in Edgecombe County, N. C. so his parents would have been living in Edgecombe County when he was born in 1826. Boy, would I love to find a connection with other Harpers! I am working on a Harper book centered around Harper deeds, mortages, etc. Since I have retired from teaching, there is time for this. My Aunt Ella would get my cousin to take her to Lenoir County to visit Harpers who were relatives. Now I am checking out Harpers in Lenoir County. One of my grandfather's brothers was Jesse Lawrence Harper. There could be a connection but I do not have much on Lenoir County Harpers. The Harpers had to spend time making a living so they were not political and listed in books for committes, boards, commissioners, etc. I would be glad to pay you for a copy of any Harper information you would be willing to share. My address is: Mrs. Dee Long, 204 Pescud Street, Tarboro, N. C. 27886. My husband is Cecil Earl Long. Please reply. Thank you so much. Dee
