Tradition says that he left with hog-drovers when he was sixteen and came to Mississippi. Some researchers have shown him as a son of Henry Strickland and Ruth Thompson, but due to his being born in North Carolina, while all the other children were born in Georgia, this does not seem likely. Per SABINE COUNTY HISTORICAL SKETCHES AND GENEALOGICAL RECORDS, Noah and his family came to Sabine County, Texas in 1860 and paid state and county taxes in 1861. The book added that the Noah Strickland served in the Civil War, but took the measles after being mustered out and died in Mississippi. The ten children listed here are from the above referenced book, and are supposedly based on the 1850 Sabine Parish, Louisiana Census. The actual census should be consulted to verify this. (Note: The family is shown on an extract of the 1860 Sabine County, Texas Census. The only children then listed are Nancy, John H, James and William (twins), Martha and Elizabeth (twins), Anny C (Unice) and Matthew Noah). Per the book, OLD TIMERS OF SABINE COUNTY, TEXAS by Virgie Speights (S. Malone Printers, San Augustine, Texas c 1983), "Noah and "Polly" Strickland had four daughters, Nancy, Martha, Jane and Sarah, and three sons Bill, John and Matt" (p 54). I assume that the four girls on the census and the four girls in the book are the same, even though two names match and two names do not. For example, perhaps the third daughter is Jane Elizabeth and the fourth daughter is Sarah Una. This needs to be verified. The census lists 6 sons, where as Old Timers only lists 3. Perhaps three sons died as young men, or moved away from home too early for the younger generation to remember. This also needs to be followed up on. Later in OLD TIMERS it is stated that "(Noah and Polly Strickland's) six children were John Strickland (Dee's father), Bill Strickland, Matt, Jane, Martha and Unice." Descendants of Noah S. I'm looking for an Isom STRICKLAND from GA, possibly Bryan County. Dianne, unfortunately there appears to be very little information on Absalom. The most definitive research done on him was by a man named Freeman Strickland (reference The Strickland Scene, Vol. 2, #4). I have not been to Duplin, NC at the present time to see what is there, but I do have access to the Clayton Library in Houston which is one of the best genealogy libraries in the states. I have been able to find the few records that Absalom appears in (usually in abstracted form). Based on what I've found and the article by Freeman Strickland, I have pieced together a POSSIBLE listing of children for Absalom and Richard. For Absalom and Sarah (Huggins) Strickland definite children derived from interpreting the records would include: 1) Richard 2) Charles 3) Matthew other children may have been: 4) Mahala Strickland (female?) 5) Neesa Strickland (female?) 6) Ephriam Strickland 7) Jesse Strickland The children of Richard were supposedly listed in different family bibles floating around Florida and there is work that could be done here to tie these folks together. I understand (by contacting the county) that all court records for Dale County, Alabama where Richard Strickland died were all destroyed by fire for the time period which he lived/died there. So it is highly unlikely that anything "official" can be found to document for certain the children of Richard. Children of Richard and Sally Unknown of Duplin, NC are possibly: 1) Jesse Strickland 2) Wilson D. Strickland 3) James Young Strickland * 4) Major Strickland 5) Bolen Strickland 6) Rebecca Strickland 7) Nathaniel Strickland 8) Hardy Jackson Strickland 9) Matthew Strickland 10) Elizabeth Strickland 11) John Strickland 12) William Strickland * *Note for William Strickland (my ancestor) and James Young Strickland - both appear very near each other on the 1850 Jackson, FL census. Also near them are Simeon Strickland, Samuel Strickland (possible sons of James Young Strickland) and a Leller Strickland working as a farm laborer for a neighboring family. Children of William Strickland & Betsey Evans (1st wife): 1) Burton Ferrell Strickland 2) William Green Strickland Children of William Strickland and 2nd wife Harriet (Hadley?) Strickland: 1) Amanda Strickland 2) Mary Strickland 3) Isaac Strickland 4) Hadley H. Strickland 5) Eli Strickland 6) Elizabeth Frances Strickland This has all been posted before on the list, so nothing new here. Also, please remember that the above lists are not concrete and cannot be officially proven for some of the above mentioned names and should just be considered at this point to be a roadmap of this family. Hope this might help you.
