Martha, Jesse Summerlin is listed in 1840 Census in Duplin; in 1850 Census in Wayne, Neuse North Side; in 1860 Census in Wayne, Cross Roads District; in 1870 Census in Wayne, Grantham Township. I've always heard that the family lived at Bentonville during the Civil War and that my grandfather Jesse Giles Summerlin, who was in his mid-teens at the time, pretended to be a deaf-mute like some of his siblings so as to escape any type of retaliation from the Yankees during the Battle of Bentonville. The family must have actually lived in northern Wayne County, instead of southern Johnson County, according to the census records. Jesse Summerlin's wife Margaret (Peggy) Williams was a daughter of Adam Williams of Johnson County.
