Spence b. ca. 1830 in Duplin Co. to William Spence, m. Susan Williams or Waller in Lenoir 1858. Found on the 1850 Duplin census in the household of his father. Listed on the Lenoir census for years 1860, 1870, and 1880. Was reported to be a CSA veteran, a member of the 40th NC regiment, captured at the battle of Fort Hatteras in 1861, held at Fort Warren prison in Boston, then was released as part of a prisoner exchange. Kinston newspaper lists widow Susan Spence in an article on Civil War pension payments in 1903. Looking for any information that might lead to the whereabouts of the burial of Stephen Spence. I have no information where or when, but sometime between 1880 and 1900.
