The Richard Caswell/Ram Neuse Site in Kinston was, in the mid- to late-1800s known as the Desmond Plantation and its owners were Lewis C. Desmond and his wife Eliza W. Desmond. Apparently the Desmonds had a daughter named Mary who married a Fonville. In her 1895 will (copy on file at Lenoir County Court House) Mary E. Fonville directed that the plantation be sold and all the proceeds be divided among the living grandchildren of John Gatlin (1769-1836) and Susannah Caswell Gatlin (1775-1843), all of whom were living in states other than North Carolina. Does anyone have information on the Desmond family and how they may be related to the Gatlins? Jim Gaddis monument@esn.net
