Jack, I have a couple of odd Westbrooks on my database sent by a researcher and list member on the Kennedy family. No documentation but it is probably right. Can you fill in the blanks? The names imply a connection to your crowd and don't want a double entry. Thomas Hardy Kennedy bc 1806 in Lenoir Co - d 1853 in Oktibbeha, Ms (his mother was one my my Hardee/Croom lines from Lenoir) md Sarah M. Shaw in Lawrence Co, Alabama They lived in Franklin and Sumter Co, Ala then moved to Oktibbeha, Ms They had two daughters who married Westbrooks I assume in Oktibbeha Co, Ms. Mary Francis md Charles C. Westbrook - bc 1828 - Mary Francis died in Pike Co Noted that Moses and Sidney Ann Carr Westbrook had a son Charles born in 1838 in Lenoir Co but his initials appear to be Charles A. Louisa ELizabeth md Elias C. Westbrook - ca 1850 - he was bc 1822 Elias is a big Carr name. Thanks. Martha
Martha, I can only add a few bits of additional information. I am aware of these Westbrooks but can't, as of yet, fit them into the bigger picture. Here's what I have right off hand: I checked a transcript of the 1840 Oktibbeha County census and found no Westbrooks. However, it's a different story for Lowndes County. 1850 census, Oktibbeha County, MS from FAMILIES OF OKTIBBEHA COUNTY, MISSISSIPPI 1850 [this is a transcript of the free schedule from the 1850 census], by Katie-Prince Ward Esker, n.d. household #11 Charles C. Westbrook 37M farmer NC Mary 21F AL Sarah 6F MS William 3M MS Mary 2F MS Infant 10/12F MS household #611 Elias Westbrook 28M farmer NC Elizabeth 18F AL Sarah 5F NC household #614 Benjamn Exum 36M farmer NC Sarah 28F NC Jesse 10M NC Titus 8M NC Piercis 6F NC James 4M NC Lewis 2M MS This is, of course, the Benjamin H. and Sarah Ann Westbrook Exum that I'm descended from. The full name of "Titus" was "Titus Carr." I'm sure that you will agree with my observation that the proximity of the Elias Westbrook household to that of the Benjamin Exum household is indeed suggestive, particularly when you have noted that Elias was a common Carr name. My speculation has been that Sarah Ann Westbrook Exum's mother was a Carr, perhaps a daughter of Titus Sr. and her father was possibly Henry Westbrook, the son of Charles Westbrook. Henry was living in the same district of Greene county as BHE's family according to the 1816 tax roll for Greene County, NC. Proximity of the two households in 1850 along with the ages of Elias and Sarah certainly suggests that they might well have been siblings. Sarah's age as rendered here in the census is apparently incorrect. Her marker in Greenwood Cemetery, West Point, indicates that she died January 28, 1890, aged 75, implying a birth date of 1814/1815. Birthplaces of the children in both households suggests a relatively recent arrival in Oktibbeha County from NC. Also note that Elias has a daughter Sarah. Quite a few coincidences. household #370 Rachael Carr 54 NC Julia 28 NC Thomas 27M farmer NC Ruphas 20M farmer NC Dabney 15M farmer NC I have no idea who these folks are. I cannot help but note the name Dabney Carr, which is the same name as Thomas Jefferson's close friend and brother-in-law who was the first person buried in the Monticello Cemetery. household #744 Moses F. Westbrook 45M sheriff NC Frances 37F NC John 16M student NC Permelia 12F NC Patrick 11M MS Poke 9M MS Virginia 9F MS Idella 3F MS Moses F. Westbrook is listed in the 1840 census for Lowndes County, immediately adjacent to a James Westbrook. Same census, preceding Moses F. and separated by 8 households are (in sequence): Allen Carr. Thomas Holliday, Chasrles Westbrook, and Moses Westbrook I might note that Lowndes County and Oktibbeha County are adjacent to one another. In 1872 substantial portions of Lowndes and Oktibbeha along with portions of Chickasaw and Monroe went to make up Clay County. West Point was originally in Lowndes, however it was only about a mile or less westward to the Oktibbeha County line. I don't know if you're aware of this; however it might be of interest: 1850 Lowndes County Census from typescript compiled by Betty Wood Thomas, 1850 CENSUS LOWNDES COUNTY, MISSISSIPPI, Blewett Company, Columbus, MS, 1978 household #356 John F. Carr 45M planter NC 19 slaves Salina 40F NC Melissa 16F NC Thomas 14M MS Margaret 9F MS John 7M MS Louisa R 9/12F MS Also: from Thomas Battle Carroll, HISTORICAL SKETCHES OF OKTIBBEHA COUNTY, Dixie Press, Gulfport, MS, 1931, reprint edition, Sullivan's Printing, West Point, MS 1983 p. 49 "In 1841, Moses S. [sic, should be "F."] Westbrook succeeded James Eastland as sheriff. He remained in office until 1857. He was a slaveholder living near our Black Jack [community]." p. 67 "Moses F. Westbrook, of the eastern quarter of the county, who had become sheriff, as you probably remember in 1841, remained in office until 1857." These are just odd-and-ends that I had on hand. I don't believe that I've checked later Oktibbeha County censuses or cemetery records for them. So more could be forthcoming. Also regarding Thomas Hardy Kennedy, I don't have anything on hand. However, I would have had no reason to look for him in the past. I'll bet that he's in the 1850 OK CO census. I'll check when I have an opportunity.
