Think this is family tradition. She had no additional information on him other than he moved to Georgia. In addition family tradition states that the father, Shadrack, and sons Jesse, Bartholomew, and Thomas all went to Ga and Shadrack and Bartholomew returned to Lenoir Co. Maybe you are the "missing" Jesse. Shadrack married Mary (Polly) Farmer daughter of Jesse Farmer so the name fits. There are a number of Fields descendants on the Lenoir Co RootsWeb list. I descend from Shadrack's son William who was the sheriff of Lenoir Co for many years. Martha
