    1. [NCLENOIR] Hays Branch, Clarks Branch, Crooked Johnny's Branch and South West Creek - Taylor/Caswell family

    3. Sometime back there was some discussion on the confusion of whether South West Creek was ever in Craven Co once Johnston Co was formed. Still not sure of that but Gloria and I had a light bulb to go off the other day. We found a patent in Craven Co in 1759 to John Taylor on SW Creek and Hays Branch and adj to Henry Roberts. Through a series of deeds in Craven Co we can track that exact same patent. On one of the deeds the WIT was Armwell Herring. In 1761 it was sold again, still in Craven Co, and the WIT were Samuel and John Loftin. In 1763 a John Taylor Jr. received a patent in Craven Co on Clark's Branch on SW Creek. Nothing identifies where Hays Branch or Clarks Creek were. In 1769 Richard Caswell received a patent - near head of Miller's pocoson, Henry Roberts now Nathan Ward, both sides of Mill Branch, Armwell Hearon near Crooked Johnny's Branch, his land called Woodington and lands Caswell bought of JOHN TAYLOR - Caswell's land was adj to the original 1759 John Taylor patent and the land was actually in Dobbs Co, never Craven Co. According to Bill Murphy NOTE: According to Bill - Crooked Johnny Creek was in the Woodington area - across state road 1140 and into SW Creek - which means it flows north into SW Creek MURPHY Once Johnston County was formed, the Woodington area was never in Craven Co. A good deal of the land of the Taylor family was in the Woodington area and adj to Richard Caswell - both families were from Joppa, Md. It appears that Hays Branch and/or Clark's Branch became known as Mill Branch or Crooked Johnny's Branch. Who knows what they are called today. Obviously some of the patents that belonged in Johnston/Dobbs were written as if they were in Craven Co and there are later deeds in Craven Co for Johnston and Dobbs. I have learned a lesson from this - double check Craven Co even after Dobbs was formed. Some of these people continued to register their deeds in Craven Co for whatever reason. We are grateful they did but it has been a frustrating exercise. Martha
