We greatly appreciate the Historical Preservation Group's decision to have a Genealogical Committee, chaired by Tracy. This idea was discussed when Jane, Pat, and Cindy came to DC in Jan on Civil War Business. This organization is new and the primary focus at this point is the preservation of the two Civil War Battlefield sites in Lenoir County - part the Wyse Fork site was in Jones County. The Board is swamped and learning their way and they have done a fantastic job in a very short time period. Local support has been strong and we hope to build on that support. Eventually they hope to spread out to incorporate projects like cemetery preservation, but that is down the road. The "gentleman's agreement" was if they would appoint a Genealogical Committee, the organization would not be expected to do any work at this time. Tracy, as the Chair, with support from the local community would take on this task. We greatly appreciate Tracy taking on this task but she can't do it by herself and don't forget she is also the webmaster for the Group, Jones and Craven County in addition to now doing work for Old Dobbers. We have learned from Pitt County Family Researchers that it is the local members who do all the work - the rest of us get to enjoy all their labors. So those of you who live in the area, please talk to your family, neighbors and friends to see if they would be interested. There are a number of good reasons to have a local Genealogical Society, including a formal host for an Old Dobbers Reunion that these lists discussed having several years ago. There was no local umbrella in the area at that time to put together such a Reunion. Stay tuned for more on this project. We do appreciate Jane and her Board for their support in the field of genealogy - they are all members of these lists - and especially to Tracy for her leadership. Martha
