Found this very interesting. From Rootsweb this morning. BLACKBEARD'S CANNON. Divers recently raised what is believed to be one of the cannons from Blackbeard's QUEEN ANNE'S REVENGE, which sank off the North Carolina coast in 1718. Is anyone working the Shadrack Fields family besides Linda and Glenn? ANd me. Have started doing a little sorting - just cleaned out 1/3 of a file drawer with useless Fields information all over the State of Virginia. Martha
We have a number of list members who live in Texas, some in the Houston area but not sure about La. Just heard from Kay and the water came up to her front door. As she said, the furniture can be replaced, but not the genealogy research over 30 years. Emailed Rose yesterday but have not heard from her. One of my new correspondants who was in the process of sending me additional information on the Hardee family of Lenoir has been flooded out. That entire area looks like eastern NC after Floyd. Our thoughts and prayers are with those list members who are affected and we sincerely hope their personal damage will not be great. Martha

I have just had to remove a list member - Jewel. Just received 5 more emails from her with an attachment with a virus/worm. Attempts to reach her by phone have not been successful. As soon as she cleans up her pc, she is more than welcome to subscribe again as I consider her a valuable list member. According to Paula, any message she has not read receives a reply to you so PLEASE DO NOT OPEN THE ATTACHMENTS. Jewelle spends a lot of time at the beach so in her defense, not sure she even knows she has a problem. This is my first experience with this type of virus/worm coming in the back door so please accept my apology and that of Jewelle. No doubt it will not be the last time, but next time I will not wait so long before removing a member. Martha
Martha Elmore says for the time being, the Manuscript Division of Joyner Library at ECU is not open on Sat - due to a lack of funding.
THink this is getting complicated enough to send it to the list because know we have one good Darden researcher on the Greene list. This comes under the heading of - we got off on a tangent. Was entering some of my information on the Fields family of Lenoir and in entering the information on the branch that married into the Pope family wanted to try and do some linking. Already had a fair amount of information on John and Mary Pope of Greene Co. At least I assume it is the same John and Mary Pope since there were Popes in Pitt Co also. Col John Hardee of Pitt had a granddaughter, Mary Pope, who was probably the child of Abraham and Susannah Hardee Enloe. IS THIS MARY THE GRANDDAUGHTER OF COL JOHN HARDEE OF PITT? The few names we have don't fit the usual Hardee names. Redding W. Pope of Lenoir Co married Olivia Fields in 1868. The Fields and Pope family Bibles state Redding was the son of Redding and Nancy Pope. I have Redding Pope b 1775 md to Sarah Carr daughter of Titus Carr. They had three children, Henry, Edward and Robert who was b in 1816. No further information. This Redding Pope was the son of John and Mary Pope. John and Mary Pope also had children that we know of - Sarah b 1777 who md James Albritton Nancy Ann b 1787 who married Robert Harper John b 1779 who md Nancy How Speight and then Ann Harper One would assume that Redding Pope who md Nancy fits in this family somewhere but where. Did Nancy die and Redding remarry a sweet young thing or are we missing a generation. In the BIble that Chris has with the information on Redding and Sarah Carr Pope is the entry Nancy W. Edwards departed this life in the year of our Lord January the 24th 1837" Nancy W. Edwards was Nancy W. Darden, daughter of Abraham Darden and she married Henry Edwards. After her death, Henry married Lucretia Uzzell. Chris wants to know who the parents of Henry Edwards were. This Bible ended up in the home of Lucretia and Henry Edwards - WHY? Why was the entry in the Bible for Nancy E. Darden Edwards and what connection was there between her and the Pope family - where the name Nancy is found. ANyone have any clues? I am new to the list and am researching the Skinners that lived in Lenoir County prior to 1800, mainly Jesse Skinner, brn abt 1745, a bro to Benjamin (old Benjamin of Darlington County S.C.) William the 3rd, and they had a sister Sarah. Their father was William Jr. and his father William Sr. I can find Jesse in Lenoir County records up until abt 1787-88 but after that the three brothers are gone. Benjamin to Darlington, S.C., and William to Ga. Jesse is also mentioned as being in Ga abt 1790. After that Jesse seems to disapear. Any info on the Skinners willbe greatlyappreciated.. Thanks , Carl B. Skinner
Guy is not on the list, I don't think. http://www.rootsweb.com/~usgenweb/nc/wayne/waynestones The above will get you to the Wayne Co. Cemeteries. This is the one Guy has been working on recently, but can't answer about the Simmons, you'll just have to check. They are located by numbers, Highways and list of surnames buried there. They are put in first by surnames, then when you go to the cemetery you will find a number and a highway telling you where they are. I'm sorry, but I do not know what county Dudley is in. I have big maps but they are stored right now. Rose

I am not sure how this is working but we have a problem and it is going around the various lists. ROOTSWeb stops any attachments so it is impossible to spread a virus or worm through the lists; however, something is going in through the backdoor. PLEASE keep in mind that a virus/worm is no ones fault and no one spreads it around knowingly. I intend to use names - one with permission, the other without because you need to be warned. What appears to be happening is (don't worry - I deleted these off my pc without opening) I/you send a post to the list - a list member responds almost immediately with a botched "reply" with an attachment. I got two yesterday from Jewel - one with the attachment entitled C:\ATTACHMENTS\YOU_are_FAT!.TXT.pif" the other C:\ATTACHMENTS\docs.scr" Someone on the PCFR list warned us Jewel's pc was sending out a virus/worm so I deleted them without opening. TOday, right after Rose sent out a post and I replied, I received a "reply" from Pat with an attachment entitled C:\ATTACHMENTS\Humor.TXT.pif" I immediately emailed her and asked if she sent this and just received a 3rd party anwer - NO and she has a virus/worm. DO NOT OPEN ANY ATTACHMENT SENT AS A REPLY FROM ANYONE ON THE LIST!!!!!!! Whatever this is, it appears to be changing names as it goes around and I don't know whether it is a virus or a worm. The warning of NEVER OPEN AN ATTACHMENT unless you are expecting it or double check with the sender before opening applies at all times but especially now. Please, if you receive a strange "reply" with an attachment, notify the person to check their pc and maybe for the time being you need to notify the lists of whose pc is sending them out. That is for the protection of all of us. Sorry about that but it happens. Martha

NC Query Forum Reply Here: http://genconnect.rootsweb.com/gc/USA/NC/Lenoir/10718 Surname: cauley ------------------------- Do you know which Cauleys are buried in the Cauley cemetary? I am especially looking for the grave of Roger or Roderick Cauley and Mary Dove Cauley. I would appreciate any information you might have. These graves should be from the early 1800's I think. Any information you have regarding this cemetary would be helpful. I do not live there and probably can't go there for several years. Many thanks, mcc
Good Morning Mr. Burroughs and "Cousins"! Thank you so very much for an excellent update. I will pass this on to my folks and maybe they will become interested as new prospective members. I thoroughly enjoy the gracious and professional IRQ magazine and they are each a "Treasure" of the past! Wish I could make the monthly meetings, but definitely look forward to these updates! ...{:) Have a great weekend and give all of our "Cousins" my best and sincere regards, Dan Fairfax 2629 Somerset Drive Nashville, Tennessee 37217 dfairfax@nespower.com http://www.hchsonline.org ==================================== -----Original Message----- From: Horry County Historical Society [mailto:history@sccoast.net] Sent: Thursday, June 07, 2001 10:20 AM Subject: Update on HCHS news TO: All members of the Society RE: HCHS news Our plan for the renovation of the Quattlebaum Office is proceeding. Architect, Gerry Wallace, with Mozingo & Wallace Architects LLP, is generously donating his time by providing the necessary drawings and plans for the project. Once these plans have been approved by the State Preservation Office and the City of Conway, the renovations can begin. When complete, the historic building will be rented to the City of Conway as the office of the City's Visitor Program. Once the renovations for the Quattlebaum Office has begun, Gerry Wallace has also agreed to help us with some work on the Bryan House. The current plans are to enlarge the existing opening between the Dining Room and and Back Sitting Room so that the two rooms can act as one area and serve a larger crowd. Other than that and re-working a bathroom, the only other work that needs to be done to the inside seems to be cosmetic. At least for now. Already two local organizations rent the Bryan House for their monthly meetings. They are the Litchfield Camp of the Sons of the Confederate Veterans and The Town & Country Garden Club. We are happy to have both of these organizations using the Bryan House and hope others will follow once the renovation is complete. We are discussing a comprehensive landscape plan with Waccamaw Landscaping. Jean Rothrock is working with us on this and is donating some of her time to the Society to help us get started. As always we appreciate people donating their valuable time to the Society so that we can better serve the community. The Society recently was given a beautiful Steinway & Sons piano manufactured in 1867. It was donated by the Albert Goldfinch Family in memory of Betty Ford Goldfinch. Also donated recently was a "lawyers bookcase" by James Goldfinch in memory of his parents. Anyone that would like to donate an object to the Society, be it furniture or art, is encouraged to contact me. Your donation can be in memory or honor of someone special to you and will become a permenant memorial to them while also being enjoyed by the Society's members and visitors. The Editor of the Independent Republic Quarterly, Chris Boyle, will be sending out the first IRQ for 2001 in the next few weeks. Chris teaches history at Aynor High School and his obligations there have kept him from getting the IRQ out sooner. Please be patient and rest assured that you will receive 4 issues each year. Our web site continues to get great reviews from people who vist it. We have a little more than 2,000 hits each month on the average. HTC Communications donates our phone and internet connection services. If you have anything that you want to contribute to the site please contact me. I have several articles that have been sent in and hope to be adding them soon. Anything that is sent in is put in a folder and will eventually be added after review and approval. We NEED you to contribute articles and family history. The next meeting of the Society will be on July 9 at the First United Methodist Church on the corner of Main St. & 5th Ave. in Conway. The meeting will begin at 7:30 PM. We plan to do our own version of the "Antiques Road Show" courtesy of Paul Rice. Members may bring up to two items to be appraised, however there will be some restrictions on what will be appraised. Details will follow soon. As always, thanks for your support to the Society. Ben Burroughs, Exec. Dir.
