    3. I have finally finished up the cemeteries I was doing for Wayne Co. "Gravestone Inscriptions" and one of the last done was for the Whitfields. It has William Whitfield III born 1743 married 4 times and Needham Whitfield born 1758-1812 married 4 times. At the bottom of the page it has William II and III listed as Rev. War Soldiers but the odd part and what I am unsure about is the Needham Whitfied listed as 1775, d. 1783. I think this may the same person as listed above but are the dates of the time served in the war or something, not birth and death dates. Can anyone confirm this?? I need to know by the first of the week before it gets posted on line. Rose Parks

    3. And what a glorious day it is this day! Here in (Colonial) Williamsburg where freedom rings everyday and we have a constant reminder of what it took and still takes to have this freedom we so passionately celebrate and covet. Today we shall once again visit Yorktown and go down to CW and watch the parade and fireworks at the Governors palace and as the Fife & Drum Corp pass us by I shall be remembering Gov. Richard Caswell and all the men, women and children of Kinston and NC who gave all they had and thereby gave me the best there is! Martha and all, have a great day -----Original Message----- From: Martha Marble [mailto:mmarble@erols.com] Sent: Tuesday, July 03, 2001 9:17 PM To: NCLENOIR-L@rootsweb.com Subject: [NCLENOIR] Happy Birthday to the USA May each of you have a glorious day on our country's birthday and remember our ancestors and their part in the building of the country we are so fortunate to live in. 3. Martha, Jesse Summerlin is listed in 1840 Census in Duplin; in 1850 Census in Wayne, Neuse North Side; in 1860 Census in Wayne, Cross Roads District; in 1870 Census in Wayne, Grantham Township. I've always heard that the family lived at Bentonville during the Civil War and that my grandfather Jesse Giles Summerlin, who was in his mid-teens at the time, pretended to be a deaf-mute like some of his siblings so as to escape any type of retaliation from the Yankees during the Battle of Bentonville. The family must have actually lived in northern Wayne County, instead of southern Johnson County, according to the census records. Jesse Summerlin's wife Margaret (Peggy) Williams was a daughter of Adam Williams of Johnson County. 3. With all the Hines info going through now, please don't forget to look for a Sarah Hines who may have married a Herring and then widowed and married Thomas Uzzell. I know this is just "oral tradition" in the Uzzell family but he died in 1772 and his estate probate was not finished in 1785, so it appears there could have been minor children. Thomas Uzzell had 3 children who are said to be "siblings" leaving out the other older children of Thomas. These are documented as being siblings: Isom Uzzell, Susannah Uzzelll who married Burrell Westbrook and Nancy Uzzell who married Stephen Lassiter (my line) Susannah and Nancy are twins and both married in 1784. 3. Christine, I don't know that I have any information that will shed much light on your research, but thought I would comment on a couple of notes in your post below. You said: "Children of CHARITY HINES and JACOB SUMMERLIN are:" and then listed seven, including "iii. HINES SUMMERLIN . . . " followed by the note: "this was on page 2, on page 62 is GilesSummerline age 23NC, Patience 23NC (dau of Stephen & Bethany Hines Grimes)Eveline 6, Al, Delia 4, Rachel2, Parisee (f) 1. I think this is a Gson ofCharity and Jacob also." Also was included "vii. JESSE SUMMERLIN, m. MARGARET PEGGY WILLIAMS." Well, Jesse Summerlin and Margaret (Peggy) Williams were the paternal grandparents of my mother, who was Sallie Ann Summerlin Hill. Her father was Jesse Giles Summerlin who married Martha Caroline Grant in 1871 in Wayne Co., NC. Mama never just referred to her father as Jesse Summerlin; it was always Jesse Giles Summerlin, probably used to distinguish him from his father. It would appear to me that the Giles Summerline mentioned in your notes must indeed be a Gson of Charity and Jacob too; but, if so, wonder which of the males listed as children of Charity and Jacob was his father. Have you seen the name Giles elsewhere in this family? While I am writing this, let me mention that Jesse Summerlin and his wife Peggy Williams had 15 children, including my grandfather Jesse Giles Summerlin. Several of them (5 or 6) were deaf-mutes, obviously hereditary. In your research, have you come across notations for any other Summerlin or Hines family members that they were deaf-mutes?
