MESSAGE FROM THE ROOTSWEB HOME OFFICE by Jake Gehring, RootsWeb Executive Producer Another week of work on the message boards has gone by. I just wanted to send out a quick note to report progress on bug fixes and enhancements as well as clarify my copyright statements which appeared in my last message. --- Users can now filter messages by category (queries, deeds, Bible records, obituaries, etc.) to see only messages of a particular type. --- Advanced searches may now be performed within a particular board and this option has been set as the default when the "Advanced Search" link is clicked from within a board. --- Combining the board hierarchies from GenConnect and FamilyHistory.com has progressed quite a bit since launch and is nearing completion. We realize this part of the launch has caused some problems, so thanks for bearing with us as we get one structure for all those millions of messages! Regarding the ownership of messages posted on the boards: RootsWeb states in its Acceptable Use Policy: "When you post messages to mailing lists, message boards, and other facilities at RootsWeb, those posts remain your property under copyright law." The Terms & Conditions at Ancestry.com are the same on this point: "Portions of [Ancestry.com] will contain user provided content, to which you may contribute appropriate content. For this content, Ancestry is a distributor only." And again from the MyFamily.com, Inc. Internet Services Copyright Policy: "Content which has been contributed to public area of the MyFamily.com, Inc. sites by users remain the property of the submitter or the original creator and we are a licensed distributor of such content." I really hope to resolve any concerns here by stating that "if you posted it, you own it." Please feel free to read these legal documents yourselves for clarification: RootsWeb.com Acceptable Use Policy http://www.rootsweb.com/rootsweb/aup.html Ancestry.com Terms and Conditions http://www.ancestry.com/legal/terms.htm MyFamily.com, Inc. Internet Services Copyright Policy http://www.myfamilyinc.com/about_us/copyright.htm That's it for this week. Please keep your input and comments coming so that we can continue to improve the message boards and make your research easier!

fyi -----Original Message----- From: JUDITH712@aol.com [mailto:JUDITH712@aol.com] Sent: Monday, July 02, 2001 8:11 PM To: FAIRFAX-L@rootsweb.com Subject: FAIRFAX OF YORK For all who are researching the Fairfax Family there is a new book out worth buying. It is Fairfax of York by Gerry Webb. It can be purchased on Amazon. You have to go to their INTERNATIONAL section to find it but it can be ordered and paid for with a credit card which eliminates getting the sterling money order we sometimes have to do when purchasing things from England. It is not just another genealogy book but the story of the family and contains the most amazing pictures. The reason I mention the book is that is deals with the question of what religion the various branches of the Fairfax family followed among other things. My Fairfax line was from both MD and VA so figuring out the religion my help me trace the lines better. Now for the disclaimer: I am in way related to or benefiting in any way from telling you about the book. I also do not work for Amazon. Judy in Ohio but always a Mountaineer WRIGHT, PELL, FAIRFAX, PHILLIPS, PYLES, PILES, MILLER, MITTER all of WV / VA
Thanks Martha, I also need to make a trip to Jones County, and visit the Court House, hope to do it soon, was going to go today, but went to heritage place instead. For anyone who might be interested....I extracted all Simmons marriage info out of the Jones County marriage register, Vol 4. runs from about 1850-1930...... Be glad to do Simmons look-ups from that....... Also, I have copies of the FULL 1790, 1810, 1820 and 1830 census for Jones County, Hopefully will not be long until I can copy the other years also........ Tracy, Sounds like a great idea. Imput a little of mine on the database the other day and sent out a couple of emails to other descendants of Abraham and Martha (Patsy) Sutton Simmons. I have just about nothing on that line other than my direct line and a trip to the Jones Co Courthouse is on my list of things to do next trip. Have not checked to see what is in the Grady Simmons information. I have a hard copy of that but lost the database that Gloria had sent me for FTM when my pc crashed. Some of Abraham's land which is actually in Lenoir Co is still in the family. Hello everyone, As most of you know, I like many of you descend from Johann Simon (John Simmons SR) and Margaret Bussett of Craven County. While I have pretty much been able to document my own line back....I have noticed in my research that most of the compiled info on this family is through three of the sons, Emanuel, Daniel, and Abraham Bussett. My own line of Descent is through John, the eldest son of Johann and Margaret. Up until recently, I had only come across one or two people who could trace their ancestry back through John. However as of late, I have meet quite a few more descendants. My long term goal is to try and put a comprehensive database together of the descendants of Johann and Margaret, perhaps donate a printed copy to the local libraries, but short term and closest to my heart is the line of their son John. I would like to invite any and all Simmons Descendants who are interested in collaborating on this to please contact me....... Thanks so much to all who have already shared their information. One of these days we have to get a group over to ECU to cull the Bible records of Bills that have not already been posted from other sources. We can't do it from the Books but sure can from his files. No to your question on Harriett. THere is a note that Thomas R. Emery met his future wife while studying medicine at UNC and then he practiced in Pittsboro and Chapel Hill before going to Kinston. He married 2nd Laura widow of Hardie Sutton - I can't figure out which Hardie. It does not give the parents of Thomas but said be was born 17 March 1836 in New Bern. Doc had a bunch of children but none named Harriett nor a son James. Their 2nd oldest child was named Mary Vail which indicates a possible with the Craven Co Vail family. THis Mary married Aleander J. Dawson of Lenoir Co. Well on the database I have this Thomas as the son of Thomas J. and Frances Mary Vail Emery. Dr. Thomas had no son THomas but his oldest son was Joseph Hill. In proofing the 4th generation, think I just came across your Lula in a note from Mrs. Essie Simmons. YOu need to find the proofs. v. BENJAMIN H. SUTTON was born on 4 Mar 1845 in Lenoir County, North Carolina. He married Sarah A. V. Carter. He died on 22 Jul 1909 in Wayne County, North Carolina, at age 64. He was buried in Piney Grove Cemetery, Wayne County, North Carolina. Winnie refers to him as her youngest brother but he was not the youngest son. It is possible that he was he youngest whole brother but there is no evidence that ELizabeth Herring Barrow had any Sutton children. Mrs. Essie Simmons gives her maiden name as Carter. Their children given as James who son Jim md Eliza Rouse of LaGrange, Bill who married a Moye, Charles, Lou who md Ben Moye, and Nannie who md Charlie Garris. ***** Benjamin H was the son of Benjamin Sutton and probably his 2nd wife Eliza Herring. The will of Benjamin Sutton is on the Wayne Co Archives, the estate records of Simon Herring, Eliza's father is on the Lenoir Co Archives. Benjamin Sutton 16. BENJAMIN3 SUTTON (Benjamin2, John1) was born on 28 Apr 1795 in Lenoir County, North Carolina. , , He married Mary Jane Hines circa 1819. He married Eliza Herring, daughter of Simon Herring and Nancy Dawson, circa 1840. He married Elizabeth (Betsy) Herring circa 1858. He died on 28 Sep 1864 in Lenoir County, North Carolina, at age 69. , He was buried in Benjamin Sutton Cemetery,, Lenoir County, North Carolina. Two of Simon Herring's daughters married this Benjamin Sutton, Eliza and after her death, Elizabeth after the death of her first husband, John Barrow. We have no way of knowing who the mother of some of the children were not knowing when Mary Jane Hines died. Given the five year gap between Henry and Mary, it is assumed Mary was the first child of Eliza Herring. Much of the work on this family was done by Tory Sutton Helmon and Mattie Jolly. Benjamin was the son of Benjamin and his wife Sarah assumed to be a Hardy of some sort. This is a major departure of what has always been written of which there is no circumstantial evidence but it is what I think and others have now agreed. This is the Benjamin usually referred to as Benjamin Oxley but there is no circumstantial that his middle name was Oxley. Benjamin was the proven son of John, the first one into Dobbs County. His widow was Ann, whether she was the mother of his children is speculation. I just checked Lenoir, Greene and Wayne and don't see it. Think I am the one who told you about it but can't find it online. It might have gotten on the GenConnect Boards and not transferred. Later today will check my Bible files and see if I typed it up. On the Mewborn database - sent Patty an email yesterday trying to figure out how to get some of that information up on Dobbers. I don't know how to do a GEDCOM yet and a lot of the information would be lost in the transfer. We are going to play with it this summer. I want it so it can't be downloaded in the event the Mewborn Reunion decides they want to publish. Remember most of it is not my work - it is Ima and other people's. If you would send me privately exactly what you are looking for can run you a short report. I have a fairly good SUtton database which started running off last night to correct. But, have not brought it up this far - only to about 1850 give or take. The Death Certificate should give her parents or you can check the 1880 Census for both counties. Once you get her parents I might be able to link it up. There are a lot of holes and unlinked people.
