For those of you who have not yet bookmarked the URL Southside of the Neuse, you need to do so. http://freepages.genealogy.rootsweb.com/~ssneuse/index.htm The host is list member Pat and she is assisted by list member Susan. I just found two questions answered on the Lenoir Marriage file. Both are doing an excellent job. Martha
Toby, I think we have talked before. Jeannette's book has some wrong information. Oliver's first wife was Matilda Washington and they had the 8 children. He only had one daughter with Clara. I am still searching for information on James - Oliver's father who died in Barnwell Co. Keep in touch.
This is a forward from Victor on the Craven List. After talking with Victor and Steve Bradley there is a difference between what Victor has done and Steve's book. They are working from different rolls of microfilm. They will be consulting in the future so there will be no duplications. We appreciate what both are doing for all of us. To add to what Christine said - the Tracking Your Roots is one of the best websites around for Ala. It reminds me of Tracy's site. I found numerous Lenoir and Greene names on this site. There is an article in the Free Press today on Harmony Hall and one on the Archbell House. Regardless of when Harmony Hall was built or who built it, it is still the oldest existing home in Kinston and is in desperate need of repair. It is a pretty old home with a nice garden and several outbuildings that have been moved to the grounds. One of the outbuildings is the Smoke House built ca 1820 give or take that my family gave the Historical Association. The Smoke House was built by the Harvey family. From list member Pat F. comes the information that Jan and Ted have been given an old jail building presently out in the country and they are trying to get it moved to Harmony Hall and restored. The Free Press has done an excellent job recently of getting their main articles on their website. I try to read the articles and the obits each morning as you can't read the old posts. The Free Press has been running a series of historical articles by staff writers and Ted Sampley in the last month. Maybe we can try and get them to do some articles on genealogy in the future. Sure would like to see more Bibles and other documents in private hands get copied for LCC and of course, our Archives. The URL for the Free Press is http://www.kinston.com/ Martha

Been a good news day - for Tracy and all of us. Steve Bradley's Craven County Wills, Deeds, Court Records - Vol 1 is READY TO SHIP. Hope he has great response so Vol 11 will be forthcoming. Thank you, Steve. The information on the book is not on his website yet as he forgot about it but will probably be up shortly. The cost is $25 which includes shipping and the ordering information can be found on his website. He intended this to be just Wills, but the microfilm included a little of everything. Remember that the earliest Wills are in the Sec of State Records which Steve has abstracted. I forgot to ask him what years this covers but 1700's. If you want more information just wait until he posts the additional information. Website is http://www.telpage.net/bradleyp/ Martha

Hello everyone, I apologize to those of you who receive this more than once.... Just wanted to take a moment to let all the Simmons researchers know that the "New" Simmons website is up...... Its kind of bare bones at the moment....but the database does include the majority of Simmons marriages from the Jones County Marriage register volume 4. Wills should be coming soon.... http://carolinacuzins.org/Simmons/index.html Please stop by if you get a chance, let us know if you have a connection..... Guy has posted several new articles under Newspapers on the Greene Archives. We thank the Wilson Times for permission to post, Bobby Boykin for sending them, and especially our own Christine for typing them up. There may be more in the future as the paper has turned their archives over to Bobby and he is culling for Greene County. Many thanks to Christine and Guy. Martha

Is there a James Barfield and his wife, Jefferson or Nicie buried in this cemetery?
Looking for information on Fennel Dawson Langston tree, father and son, born in Lenoir County. Son born in 1857. I believe based on family bible and similarity in descendant names, this may be my tree. Any into appreciated.
Turner Reavis was born in Wake or Johnston County, NC in 1812. He married Sarah Catherine Gatlin (1814-1838) in 1835 in Kinston. She was daughter of John and Susannah Caswell Gatlin and a grandaughter of Gov. Richard Caswell. They had one child, a daughter named Susan Gatlin Reavis born 22 Mar 1838. After his wife's death in 1838, Turner Reavis apparently moved to Virginia and married Mary Strachan Barret of Dewberry, Virginia. At some point in time, I believe just after the Civil War, Turner Reavis and family moved to Gainesville, Sumter Co, AL where he practiced law and became a judge. Turner Reavis' daughter, Susan Gatlin Reavis (1838-?), married Charley Cooke, a lawyer, in Dewberry, VA. They too moved to Sumter Co, AL around 1866. Charley and Susan had the following children: 1) Mary Gatlin Cooke (b. 1860, VA) who married Huling Parker Robertson in Sumter Co, AL, son of Texas Empresario E.S.C. Robertson; 2) John F. Cooke (b.1862, VA); 3) Susan R. Cooke (b.1864, VA); and Elizabeth Cooke (b.1867, AL). This birth information is from the 1870 Sumter Co, AL census. Jim Gaddis
