    1. [NCLENOIR] Flooding in DC
    2. Martha Marble
    3. I gather at least one network finally carried the story regarding the massive flooding here LAST Sat. and I have had a number of queries. We lucked up probably with 15 minutes to spare. We prayed over the drains and the buckets of rain slowed with about one foot before the water crossed the street in front of the house. When the water meets, we are in trouble. My pc and all my genealogical records are in the basement. Several of my friends were not so lucky and we were across town at a friends home (they were out of town) at midnight with the alarm going off because the over 3 feet of water in the basement well had imploded the basement door and a foot of water entered their basement. They were lucky - no raw sewage. This is the first time the District has ever been named a Federal Disaster area and it is a mess both in the poor and affluent neighborhoods. Let's say people are learning about their lack of insurance both with their household insurance and FEMA just like in eastern NC during Floyd. Up to $50,000 in damage is not easy to handle even with the most affluent families. Martha

    3. BlankThe Battle of Wyse Fork took place in Lenoir County in 1865. There were over 20,000 troops in the area. The aftermath of the battle left 2,600 casualties. This battle was important because the Union Forces had to get past Kinston in order to reach the railroad that went north and south. On the first day of the battle the confederates did well and captured over 1,000 prisoners. This took place around Kelly's Millpond. However on the following days the union pushed back the Rebel Army and made their way to Goldsboro. I have been told that this battle has the distinction of being the last mass capture of Union solders in North Carolina. A section of this Battlefield is being sold for the development of a trailer park. The Kinston City Council will vote on rezoning this area for the purpose of this trailer park on Monday night. A group has formed a committee to fight against the rezoning. The group is called Citizens for the Preservation of Historic Landmarks in Lenoir County. 1. [NCLENOIR] Beaufort County Deed Book 1
    2. Martha Marble
    3. Great news!! Beaufort County Deed Book 1 abstracts have been uploaded to Beaufort County and linked to various other counties. These abstracts were done by Ysobel Dupree Litchfield many years ago for the Major Reading Blount DAR Chapter. As most of you know, the earliest Craven County deeds in existence are found in this Book which means many of you can find your earliest ancestors from Craven in this book. Not many of them, but some. And of course, your early Pitt County ancestors are in this Book. Our thanks, not only to Ysobel, but to our own list members Carol, Brenda, Sloan and most especially Janice for re-typing this document which has taken several months. And to Guy who has worked for three nights to get it posted. This has been a huge labor of love by all. The URL for Beaufort is http://www.rootsweb.com/~usgenweb/nc/beaufort.htm Enjoy. Martha

    3. Pat, is there anything in the work of Alice Moody Deaver's work on John W. Heath who married CA 1848 Martha (Patsy) Sutton widow of Abraham Simmons? I have not had time to do any work on them but have it at the top of my list for the next trip down. I know they had a daughter Nancy bc 1850 because she is on the 1850 Jones Census but have not taken the CEnsus further. Be nice to know his parents but other than that not interested in going backward just foreward because I come down the Simmons line. Need a trip to greater downtown Trenton to the courthouse. 1. [NCLENOIR] Dail/Taylor
    2. Martha Marble
    3. Frances, You ran the below back in Feb and I just came across something in my Dail files that I am trying to get all typed up. It is a Pedigree Chart from Olde Dobbs Trail back in 1989. This gives Jesse Taylor Dail Sr born in Greene d in Choctaw Co, Ala md Julia H. Cox. It gives his father as Benjamin Dail bc 1794-95 in Greene Co md CA 1819 died Greene Co, NC ?? md Elizabeth Taylor?? born in Greene and died in Choctaw. It gives Jesse Taylor Dail Jr as moving on and dying in Wayne Co, Miss. All of this goes with what you posted. If there was more, I must not have kept it. Martha As the Dail name has been discussed recently, I think this is a good time to enter the discussion. I live in Alabama but all my ancestors were in NC before 1835 when the last of them arrived in Sumter Co. AL. About that time John Wylie Taylor arrived with his wife, Rebecca Chaney Wallace Taylor and their two sons, John, Jr. and Francis Nelson Taylor. Sidney Wallace Gibbs, widow of William S. Gibbs and daughter of Rebecca, arrived with her children, John S. and Eliza Gibbs. John Taylor bought land with Willis Taylor in Sumter Co. and Jesse Taylor was involved with the other two in legal matters. Willis Taylor had married Nancy Uzzell in NC. He was born 1805 and married ca 1830 as their first son was Abner R. b.c. 1831. Nancy was sixteen at the time she married. Their second son, Jesse S. Taylor was also b.c. 1833 in NC. The other children were born in Ala. Jesse Taylor died in Meridian, MS and is buried at McLemore Cem.with a tombstone indicating: Born 1802 in Greene Co., NC; Died November 6, 1880 in Meridian, Miss. Jesse Taylor Dail was in 1850 Greene Co. NC census married to Julia Cox. Next door was Benjamin Dail and wife Elizabeth (Taylor?) In 1860 J. T. Dail is in Choctaw County (which county was cut off from Sumter in 1849) and E. Dail (female) is in the home of Jesse Taylor. No record of Benjamin Dail is found in either NC or AL. It seems that the husband of Elizabeth is deceased and she is living with her brother in Choctaw Co. It seems that Willis and Jesse are brothers as Willis named his second son Jesse S. What was their relationship to John Wylie Taylor? John W. died in 1837 of consumption thus putting an end to any legal records by which to trace his life. Will appreciate any information on parentage and siblings of Nancy Uzzell. Perhaps the above will fill in some blanks in the Dail, Uzzell and Taylor families of that area. And I hope I can learn some about them also. Frances
