I have a brief history of my Abbott family (written in the late 1940's - early 50's). Reference is made to a letter from Richard M. Abbott to his brother, John James Abbott (my g grandfather). "Letter dated January 6, 1873, says that his mother is living with him at that time and gives the names of his (Richard's) children except the youngest. He describes the loss of his property through the war and the difficulty of making a living on a rented farm. He describes a nervous trouble that is considerable bother to him." Later mention of Richard: His wife is not named but names of six children are given: "Lettie (married F.B. Gentry at the age of 15), Lou Kate, Ella Virginia, George Watkins, Cora May (Mrs. C. L. Weiford, 635 Loyal Street, Danville, VA) and Mrs. Pet Luther Lawless" John James Abbott, b 1821 m.(1) Perlina Lacks of Danville, VA. moved to AL in 1852 & settled in St. Clair Co in 1854. They had 11 children. (2) m. Amanda Martha Lipscomb McCargo (my g grandmother). Other sibs of JJ & Richard M. were: Joseph, William & Cassandra. Cassandra m. Moore W. Dollahite & is listed on 1860 & 1870 Person Co census. By 1876 she was widowed & living in TN. Do you have anything on these people? Thanks, Mary
Ann, THere are two Olivers that I know of - not sure if there is a particular family connection with that name, however, the families are more than likely related. This Oliver that Brenda is writing of comes down the Alexander, I, Alexander II line - I think. Have company and not had time to study what Brenda has transcribed yet. They are out of Greene Co. Then, Nathan who was born in Dobbs 1764 or so, I assume that part that was Lenoir, had a son Oliver and they all moved to Ky ca 1805. I don't have any information on what happened to Nathan's children - yet. Most probably stayed in Ky. But Nathan had a son Blaney and found a Blaney in Tenn last week bc 1815 - no clue who he was. I am reasonable sure that Francis I and Alexander of Greene and John of Lenoir were brother because of the name Blaney. The name Oliver could be a connection also but not sure at this point. I don't know enough about the Harper family of Lenoir but logic says the ones in Duplin may have come out of Lenoir as they lived very close to the Duplin border near Deep Run. Not much help but you need to see what you can find in Lenoir. I am constantly amazed at where some of those early people came from. By accident I found that Jonathan Bangs who settled in Craven made a stop on Long Island after he left Mass. Just picked up two books in New York and found the name in the index and it mentioned Craven Co. Does anyone know where this family came from? I told her that the Wiggins family came out of NJ and I doubt they moved by themselves but am not aware of other families. Martha Dear Martha, Last Wednesday in the New York Public Library, I came across a strange thing. Because the New Jersey censuses of 1790, 1800, 1810 and (I think) 1820 are missing, people have done the NJ tax lists. In Stryker-Rodda's book, I found Summerlin and Summerall and Summerell in NJ, two Craven County names. On Thomas Phillips's 1743 will, the witness's name is Henry Summerell or Summerall, as clear as day on the actual document, although other documents about this neighbor of Thomas Phillips has him as "Summerlin." Do you know who Henry Summerlin/Summerall is? And have you ever heard of anyone from New Jersey settling in Craven Co.? Of course, hundreds of NJ families settled in the Shenandoah Valley, but that's a different area, and a different culture. PS. Thanks to your friend Ed Young, I am going to Nashville to lecture. Julia Moseley Combs published an excellent little book on the Harper family a number of years ago and this project has taken her work and expanded on it since it focused on the Harpers who married into the Moseley family. Julia, Francis, Ruth, and I have been throwing around the Harper family for years - Francis has a line but Ruth and I don't - they just intermarry so much with many of our families. The early lines never fit because the premise was - Alexander was the father and Francis Sr. was the son based on the John Kilpatrick Will. My hunch was it was reversed but that hunch proved wrong. Family tradition in Lenoir was that family was connected to the Greene family but there was no proof. The key to re-working this family has been Blaney - both the name and the two early Blaneys. It is like the name Easley, Isler etc in the Kilpatrick family - the name is so unusual that when you see it, you pretty much know there is a connection to the Dobbs Co family. The same is true with the name Blaney in the Harper family. Need to find out where it came from. The Tyson Bible states that Blaney Harper was born bc 1757. That is backed up by the fact he voted in 1779 and he served in the Revo War as an Ensign. The court case found in the newspaper gives pretty strong circumstantial evidence that Alexander also had a son Blaney, bc 1770 and the later census records back that up. Blaney Sr is assumed to be a son of Francis I but there is no proof. There is no way that the younger Blaney could be the son of the older Blaney indicating two different fathers about the same age. This is where the theory that Francis and Alexander were brothers came from and the very strong possibility that John of Lenoir was also a brother since the name Blaney is found in that family. Of Alexander's children, we are going to be able to follow his children except for Francis. I am not especially comfortable with what we have on the son Blaney but Francis is and he thinks that is his line. William, we are not sure whether he did or didn't have children. With Francis I, we are running into more problems. There is no evidence of a marriage to Elizabeth Bright. We can't figure out which Francis in the next generation was his son. We think Francis I was deceased before the 1790 Census and there is evidence that he died CA 1788 but that needs to be followed up. Francis I was in the Militia, but it is highly doubtful he was the Francis who was a Lt in the Rev. War. We don't know which of the two first cousins that was and may never know. We think, but can not prove that Francis Sr on the 1790 Census was the son of Alexander and had no children and Francis Jr was the son of Francis I. We base that on later land records but those records could be misleading because Francis I and Alexander had land that adjoined. George Miller had a daughter bc 1770 who married a Harper - we don't know who she was. There is a connection with the Vendrick family of Craven and we don't know the connection but a Francis was involved and there was a Vendrick daughter who married a Harper. I have never seen a family that the Census takers missed like the Harpers in Greene Co. There is a long list on both the 1790 and 1800 Census that were missed which really complicates working with this family. Some of these people started moving out after the Rev War and some of you with Harper connections are urged to run searches in the usual migration states on the US Archives project. Nathan of Lenoir moved to Muhlenburg Co, Ky. There was a Delaney on the 1850 Census in Coosa Co, Ala with a Hastings family (all born in NC), There was a Blaney b in 1815 in Gibson Co, Tenn (from NC) whose son moved into Ark., Ormond Harper moved to Miss with a stop in Ga. It is more than possible something can be found in these other states to point back to NC but I don't have time to do the searches. Martha

Research by Julia Moseley Combs, Francis R. Hodges, Brenda Stocks, Anna, Martha Mewborn Marble and numerous other people. Draft of Francis Harper BROTHER to Alexander coming later. We also think John Harper of Lenoir Co was a brother. This is 3 generations and does not include the footnotes and text. I have found a Joshua Herring age 62 in 1850 with wife Kesiah age 60, son Joseph age 25 all born in NC with a daughter Kisiah age 14 born in GA on the Dale County, AL census. Right above him is a William age 36 which I feel is probably his son with wife Christian. Does this fit with any Herring information any of you have? I found a Joshua in Sampson Co. about the right age but have nothing else on him. It crossed my mind today that our ancestors were more prepared on the Home Front than we are today with the Militia. As I understand it, every able bodied man between the ages of 16 and 45 or so were required to be in the Militia in the 1750's to protect our land. History does repeat itself. On the top of the US Archives Bldg is "The Past is Prologue". Maybe it is time for that part of history to repeat although I can't quite see my 22 year old, 5'4" 100 pound daughter shooting a M 16 rifle. Martha
