Transcript found at the DAR so I have had to abstract We need a copy of the division of the estate in Nov 1808 if it was recorded. That should name her children. WILL OF WILLIAM HARDY In the Name of God Amen. I William Hardy of Bertie County in the Province of North Carolina Miller, being weak in body but of perfect mind & Memory. I thank the Almighty God for the same; do make and publish this to be my last Will and Testament, in Manner and form following: that is to say I Recommend my Soul to Almighty God that gave it Believing his most Gracious Acceptance of it, and my Body to the Earth to be Buried in a Christian Burial at the Discretion of my Executors: And as touching my worldly affairs I Order and dispose of them as follows. First, I will & possitively Order that as soon as may be - document appears to be torn at next word - all my Debts may be paid Then as touching such Worldly Estate as it hath Pleased God to Bless me with I desire to dispose of in the following manner (to wit) all my Personal Estate. I will that it all should remain together without any Division for and during the term of ten years after my Decease to raise my Children & school them; But in case my wife marries or dies in this time; If she Marries then to be Divided, one third part to her, & the other two thirds to be equally divided among my Children. But if She dies before the time or before married, then all to be equally Divided among my Six sons as near as Possible according to Value, only contriving it so that my youngest son Benjamin should have the place where the Houses Stands & houses Reserving the use of the shed room of my new house that has a chimney to it to my Daughter Elizabeth till she marries. Let it be remembered that nothing herein contained shall debarr or hinder my wife with the consent of my Executors from lending to any one of my Children that shall marry within the term of ten years any thing they shall stand in need of not excluding what may be thought to be their Divident; And concerning my Land; if any of my Sons should die before they come to the age of one and twenty years or before they have any heirs, then his part of the Land to be divided among my Surviving Sons. At the end of ten years if no division before than all to be divided except my land the one third part to my wife & the rest to be equally divided among my children, each one that has had any thing the same to be allowed for in??? their Legesey Aqreeable to my Books. As to my land I desire that my wife should live upon it with her family during her natural life or Widowhood; and if my mother has a mind at any time in sickness or health to come and live with my wife and family it is my desire she should Carried Over Let it be understood that it is my desire that my Daughters should have a proportionable part of my Estate though they have no land, with to my sons in Consideration of the Land. Item, & Lastly I do Constitute and appoint my Brother Edward Hardy & my Brother Jesse Hardy my son Lamb Hardy & my son William Parrott Hardy Executors & my wife Sarah Hardy Executuix of this my last Will & Testament verifying and confirming this & no other to be my last Will & Testament. In Witness whereof I have hereunto set my hand & seal this 6th day of December Anno Domino 1783. (signed) Wm Hardy Signed, sealed, declared to pro - smudged - in the presence of us Thomas Johnson Abraham (x) Lee Stephen Lee WILLIAM AND SARAH HARDY 1. He had 6 sons which leaves out Jesse as a son 2. None of his sons appears to have been married and some were under 21. 3. Daughter Elizabeth was not married 4. The way the Will reads, it does not appear any of the children were married although the oldest five Martha, Lamb, Elizabeth, Sarah, and William Parrott were all old enough. Because Elizabeth was singled out to be allowed to live in the house until she married, it is very possible that Martha and Sarah were already married. Certainly in 1782 both Martha and Elizabeth would have been considered to be "old Maids" and Sarah also as she would have been close to 23. 5. There is not a shred of evidence that I have seen that proves the Sarah Hardy who married Ephraim White was the daughter of this William Hardy. Since we know that Sarah was married to a Sutton in 1793 and it is rumored that Ephraim White moved to the midwest, I propose that Sarah was the wife of Benjamin (Oxley) Sutton of Dobbs County. The William and Sarah Sowell Hardy Bible ended up in Lenoir Co with the last entry being the marriage of Jesse and Sarah Sutton Hardy who lived in Lenoir Co. Since Jesse was not a son of William and Sarah and therefore would not have inherited the Bible, it is logical that the Bible traveled to Lenoir Co through one of their female children who married a Sutton and lived in Lenoir County. Logically, that would be Sarah, wife of Benjamin (Oxley) Sutton. The Duplin Deeds fairly well establish that Jesse Hardy married a daughter of Benjamin (Oxley) Sutton and that would make his wife, Sarah the oldest child of Benjamin and Sarah Hardy Sutton. Any comments? Martha
Mable Gertrude Stroud --> Mable Ellen Kellum Daughter of Franklin Stroud & Flora Jane Hope Born December 12, 1900 in Kinston & Died October 1970 1st - Married Howard Fox 2nd - Married Marvin Broome Is there anyone on this board that can shed light on Mable Gertrude STROUD who later called herself Mable Ellen KELLUM. Mable was a mysterious and sad story. I have been in contact with some of her sister, Myrtie's (1886 - 1961), descendants, and they have been very helpful, but there are still many unanswered questions. I understand that descendants of her brother Phillip STROUD (1896 - 1952) might be able to help. I would welcome contact from any descendants of Franklin & Flora Jane, cousins further up the line, or anyone that might know of Mable's circumstance in Kinston. Also, I am trying to determine some details of the marriage to Howard FOX which we believe took place between 1915 and 1920. Does anyone know if Howard FOX was a resident of Lenoir County. I need to locate his family, but I do not know if he lived in the area or where the marriage took place. Any details on Howard Fox would be helpful, because I have nothing but a name. Thank you, Diana Case

Peggy, I am the wrong person to ask. Am pretty good at finding people 100 - 150 years ago but actually have no clue as to finding people this century. Mostly because have not had to do it. As you know, adoption records are a tough nut to crack. Have you tried the Social Security website? If she died in NYC, have you tried to get a death certificate? Can some of the other list members give suggestions. Obituary of Sarah Fields (nee Randolph) - Copied from Mewborn Church Books, Book 1, Pages 82-83. She was the daughter of Jo Randolph and Elizabeth, his wife, whose maiden name was Lane. I do not know the exact time of her birth, but the best information I have been able to get is about the date of 1820. When she was young, she joined the church at Bear Creek where she continued a few years and then took a letter from the said church and joined at Mewborn meeting House where she remained in full fellowship until the time of her death which took place Jan. 1875. A short time before her death she said, I want to go home to be with my blessed Master. I don't want to stay here always. She appeared to be willing to go when even it was the Blessed Lord's will to call her. She was married to Mr. Thomas Fields when very young by whom she had four daughters, one of which died when an infant. Her husband also died and left her. She suffered along with her three daughters and through the blessing of a kind providence raised them to be grown. One of them was married about four years before she died. The other two lived with her at the time of her death. She was afflicted a long time with a very bad cough and got to be very poor and weak. We think her disease was consumption. She left three daughters and three little grandchildren, one son-in-law and a number of friends and the church to mourn their loss, but we hope our loss is her eternal gain. Blessed are the dead that die. The Lord from henceforth, Yea, said the spirit that they may visit from their labors and their works do follow them. Collection of Ima Mewborn
Linda, am answering to the list because messed this up yesterday and trying to clean it up as I think out loud and type and clean up my database. Hi Martha, I don't have a son of Shadrack named Thomas. Would you mind sending me the information. ***Ima had a son Thomas listed in her notes but she did not say why she thought so but in her article in the Heritage Book she does not mention a son Thomas. Well, thought I had checked all the Thomas' in the database yesterday before I typed this obit up. Missed one, actually two, which means I wasted my time retyping. The only information she had for Thomas was bc1810 - 1820. The Thomas who married Sarah Reynolds was bc 1805 and according to the PRINTED 1850 Lenoir Census had the middle initial of H. One daughter, Elizabeth bc 1849. Sarah was bc 1820 which is consistent with her obit. THey also had a daughter Lucy Ann Fields who married George Mewborn Hardy. Lucy's obit confirms her parents. Don't know the names of the other two daughters but they should be on the Census, probably in Greene Co and I don't have the 1860 or 1870 Census. Now Jeremiah Fields had a son Thomas H. and I have him on the database with the middle initial of H. wife Sarah, and daughter Elizabeth. That has to be this Thomas - dates are right and proven by the Jeremiah Fields Bible. What I am going to do is eliminate Thomas as a son of Shadrack unless one pops up in the future and go back and straighten up the database to eliminate the duplication. Now if you are not confused think I am a little. Martha As you know my Thomas Fields, was born in the 1840s and married Louisa Hill. My Thomas was a grandson of Shadrack according to others research. I have not proven that fact, but have who proof as to who he married, when born, buried Maplewood Cemetery, Kinston, NC, and that his father was Richard Fields and Dovey Fields. I also have quite a few marriage certificates that he applied for in his family. Louisa Hill Fields died and was buried in TN in the late1800s. I think in Chattanooga where her daughter Nola Benton lived. This Thomas must have had another name and I have him listed that way probably. Thomas and Louisa have a granddaughter still living and she is 91 and her is pretty clear. She does not anything except what she was told since they died before she was born. I know he must have been born at Mosley Hall where all the others were born and later moved into Greene Co. I hope to get to begin researching again soon, but may be after first of the year. Since being sick since July I have not done anything. That is why I could not go to the PCFR Reunion I still had pneumonia. Thanks again for all your hard work. Linda Melvin

I have a Thomas bc 1810 - 1820 as the son of Shadrack but no further information. Assume this is Sarah's husband. I found them in the 1850 Lenoir Census with one daughter, Elizabeth. No on the 1860 or 1870 Lenoir Census - don't know about Greene but they might have lived in Greene since Sarah was a Member of Mewborn's church. Does anyone have another candidate by the name of Thomas to be Sarah's husband? Martha
Guy has posted the Emily Loftin Collection on all three counties. It is a huge Collection but understand most are financial records for the 20th century and Miss Loftin's personal information. We only abstracted the Lenoir documents as Wayne and Pitt have their deeds. The two wills - SImon Bright IV (partial) and Susan Harper of Pitt were posted separately. There is more of interest than I saw but the boxes were in storage. Maybe later and Roger and Brenda are also going through the Collection. THere is little in the way of Loftin information but the original Ila Loftin Bible is in the Collection. Guy put a note on the original posting of the location of the original. Our thanks to Jack Goodwin for his co-operation under difficult circumstances. Martha
According to the 1850 Lenoir Census, Jesse Hardy was 76 yrs bc 1774 and his wife Sarah was 72 yrs bc 1778. That would make Sarah the oldest child of Benjamin (Oxley) since my John was bc 1779. My theory has been that Sarah, wife of Benjamin (Oxley) Sutton was Sarah Hardy daughter of William and Sarah Sowell Hardy. There has to be some explanation of how that Bible got into the hands of the Jesse Hardy - Sarah SUtton family. If Sarah inherited it from her mother, Sarah, and Sarah was the daughter of William and Sarah Sowell Hardy, it would make sense. THe problem is the Will of William Hardy in Bertie Co says his daugher Sarah was married to Ephraim White and the estate records of Sarah Sowell Hardy says she was Sarah Sutton. I think there are Marriage Bonds in Bertie for both Sarah Hardy and Ephraim White and for Jesse Hardy and Sarah Sutton. That Duplin Deed certainly indicates to me that Jesse Hardy was an heir of Benjamin Sutton. There is too much here that does not work. Martha
