Roger called the other night and we had a long chat. In reference to the series in PCFR for the General Assembly Records, he said this would be about a two year series of articles. He has given the Moye book to Betsy for the final index and then it will go to the printer. It could still be awhile since Betsy works but the end is in sight. Martha
Those of you who use msn need to be aware that rarely does a day go by that you don't bounce. Some more often than others but numerous times a week I get a message with multiple bounces from msn - gets to be a bit much after awhile. Also the newest worm detected today appears to be hitting you people hard and people with ICQ. PLEASE, be careful in opening attachments. I have not recovered from all the worm infected attachments of the past couple of weeks. At least McAfee seems to be aware of this one. Martha

Martha, I think --maybe--that Rachel Barrow is the one that married Stephen Mozingo--then after he died-married Nathan Potter. She was the later in the Hughes household[her sister married a Hughes] as an aunt.Rachel was the grandmother of Ezekiel Slaughter's children. Will have to check the letter.I hope this is the Rachel--is the only one that fits. Charles and Jemima Hardy Phillips and their family ended up in Clay Co, Ky along with Jeremiah probably an uncle. We are not sure about Mason Jr but he may have ended up in either Ill. or Ind. It is possible that Charles was the son of Mason Jr. We think Charles was a grandson of Mason I but no clue to his father. Don't know about William. I think these two are: (1) Mason Phillips jr., the son of Mason who was born in 1728 in Prince George Co. Va) and (2) Abraham Phillips, my great-grandfather, son of Charles and Jemima Hardy Phillips. Also on this list is Meredith Childers/Childress Hughes, who married one of the daughters of Charles Phillips and Jemima Hardy Phillips. I know very well who he is, and have been in contact for years with some of his descendants. 1830: Tax List same company: Mason Phillips. Abraham no longer one, and has presumably gone to Clay Co. KY. BUT: 1830 Census, in this same place and with the same neighbors as on the tax list: William Phillips, with 11 people in his household. Neither Mason Phillips nor Abraham Phillips is list4ed on this census, but this is clearly the same family, as you can see from the names of neighbors in the census that also appear in the tax lists. 1831: Tax List same company: Mason Phillips. This Mason Phillips can't be the son of Charles and Jemima Hardy Phillips, who was paying taxes in Clay County KY at that time. 1832: Mason Phillips no longer on tax list. Deed: I also found a deed that shows that Mason Phillips sold 160 acres that he owned in the far northeast part of the county. He sold it to Davis/David Cobb, jr. (about whom I asked before). But as the Tax List proves, Mason Phillips lived in the SE part of the County, on Childers Creek, a creek north of the Hiwassee River. Because I have the 1830 census and the Clay Co. KY tax lists as well, I can figure out fairly well who was where at what time. Love Mary Jane

Christine, I have a little on their son, according to Ima, Jesse Heath Barrow, but nothing on the girls. Rachel must have been something else. Under Lenoir Archives, Letters, Sutton Civil War Letter is a letter from Alexander Sutton to his sister, Winnie, in which he mentions his step sister, Rachel. Towards the end. Get the feeling that Benjamin Sutton's children were not exactly fond of their stepmother or her children. Nice job, Keith, on your website and bet the book is well done. Patty and Tracy will get it on the respective websites. I had entered a little of the Whaley/Catherine Taylor information you sent to me a couple of weeks ago - giving you credit of course. I admire anyone who actually publishes a book - I don't have the patience. Diana, Guy Potts is the web master for most of the county archives sites in eastern NC including Lenoir and Greene. Patty has Dobbs and Craven and the county site. Each county has a county site for queries and other items and an archives site for primary documents ie Bibles, Wills, etc. The URL for the State is http://www.rootsweb.com/~usgenweb/nc/ncfiles.htm from there you can get on any county The Dobbs/Lenoir Cross Indices - grantor and grantee index - are the only books that survived the Courthouse fires in the 1880's. It does not tell you much but does give an idea of who was in the area at different times and who was selling to whom. They are being transcribed - slowly - and are posted on the Lenoir Co archives site. Roger is making an selected index of the General Assembly Records at the archives and included those counties adj to Pitt such as Greene and Lenoir. Thank you Roger - some goodies for Lenoir and Greene. The index, hopefully Part I, is in this issue of the Pitt Co Family Researchers starting with 1800. Having gone through two years of these records looking for something for Patty, got a good idea of just how valuable these records are especially for burned counties. Of particular interest are the petitions. Each Session has a Petition Folder, but one can't stop at that folder because there are petitions all through the boxes. Found a good one myself under Agricuture Committee. People petitioned for such things as divorce, name changes, Rev War records, county line changes etc. Roger has also included the Militia officers and Resignations of JP's. There is a list of insolvants for both Greene and Lenoir and Roger incudes the list. Membership in PCFR is only $20 a year. P. O. Box 20339, Greenville, NC 27858. Sorry folks, there is a copyright - no lookups. Martha
Guy has posted Book 26 of the Cross Indices. Many thanks to Guy as this takes a lot of his time to re-format. Martha
