Roger, People in Fla must be more interested in their old cemeteries than in eastern NC. Not sure I was aware one could obtain Historic Status for a cemetery. Rather doubt state money would be available for this since the state takes the attitude that they really don't have the money to enforce the cemetery laws already on the books. The Historic Preservation Group intends to take on the cemetery issue but that is way down the pike. They are just getting going and the Civil War Battlefields are their top issue. The State does require a cemetery on private land be accessable to relatives and that is enforced by the Sheriff - PROVIDED one knows it is the law and sits real hard on the Sheriff. Some land owners have denied access recently which they can't do legally. Thanks for bringing this to our attention. First, welcome to the List. There are no records in Lenoir Co earlier than 1880 when the courthouse burned except in private Collections. Run a Barfield Search on the Lenoir Co Archives - there are some records for the family scattered through the archives. Also, you need to check Duplin Co because a lot of the Barfields lived there and there are a lot of records for Lenoir folks who lived in the Pink Hill area in Duplin. Tom, Have a lot of questions, but let's start with - you descend from Hardy Davis. Do you know who his father was? I am getting the feeling that the two James Davis of the same age have been mixed up. Almost has to be a connection between the two of them but am not seeing it. Martha
I am new to this list and would like to know where I can find more information about Mary (Inman) Barfield who was last found in the 1800 census in Lenoir County. Would there be land records, wills, etc.? She had 5 daughters listed and no sons and her husband, Shadrack Barfield, pre-deceased her either in Lenoir or Robeson County. Any help will be greatly appreciated. Thanks in advance, Helen in California (Descendant of Nancy Barfield and Loftin Nethercutt)
With Christmas almost forgot this. Just before Christmas, did some work in the Craven deed microfilm and think I discovered where those records came from on that roll of microfilm Steve has for Craven Co. Only reason I caught it is because worked in his book the day before on the Taylor family and started to see duplications. There are several books that LDS went in and typed up at some point and they made NUMEROUS errors in the typing. I asked the Clerk in New Bern where the original books were and she did not know. THe roll of microfilm Steve has appears to be the missing original books - at least partially. Know that Book 11 was typed and have some notes somewhere as to what other books were typed. According to my notes, Book 8 was typed and it is loaded with estates and wills. Lost all my notes from Books 12 - 17 when went from a word processor to the computer. It has bothered me that I could not place what is on that roll because I have gone through most of the original books up to Book 33. Think the question has been answered. Martha

I am somewhat familiar with the Southern Claims Court records (or at least some of them in GA) but as for the Bright and Lassiter names given, I am not familiar with any Bright named Dennis (although there were some Bright's related to our area residents in AL) and not familiar with ANY Lassiters in LA from our area. This doesn't mean these are not connected, I know I do not have everyone. Guy just posted on Lenoir Archives - Newspapers - Richard Caswell - some clippings that Roger sent to me for typing and posting. He said there was another one even earlier regarding the location of the grave but he has misplaced it. It appears the discussion of Caswell's burial place has been going on since at least 1830's. I have been distressed about this cemetery for sometime. It is located in a field behind a brick house on the road between Hookerton and Maury. The last time I was by that way the house was not being live in due to the flood. The Town of Hookerton was named for this family. They were once a prominent family in that community and contributed much to its development. One would think that the Town Of Hookerton would take some pride in its history and heritage and take steps to repair the Hooker monuments and keep up the graveyard. I think there or only two markers standing and others lying on the ground. It is obvious that over the years the plowing of that field has taken a toll on that burial site. One of my ancestors Sheriff John Hooker of Tyrrell County was a brother of Hymerick's father William Hooker. Jane Phillips God Bless America!
Julia, Going to forward this to the various lists. Don't know of any direct descendants but think there are some in Pitt Co. Hymrick Sr married Elizabeth Phillips the sister of my THomas Phillips but I don't live in the area. One of the Lenoir list members restores old stones, but of course this is his business and sooner or later have to get him to repair Elizabeth's grand nephew's stone. I hate to see old graveyards go down like this because next thing you know, they are plowed over.
