    1. [NCLENOIR] POORHOUSE Information for NC
    2. Poor House Lady
    3. We would like to invite you to re-visit our website, The POORHOUSE STORY (a clearinghouse for information about 19th century American poorhouses) at http://www.poorhousestory.com Please excuse the cross postings, but we just published poorhouse information about a great many counties in NORTH CAROLINA. Our partial list of counties known to have poorhouses includes: Beaufort/Buncombe/Burke/Cabarrus/Caswell/Cleveland/Craven/Cumberland/Davidso n/Duplin/Edgecombe/Granville/Guilford/Halifax/Iredell/Johnston/Lenoir/Lincol n/Mecklenburg/Montgomery/Moore/Nash/NewHanover/Northampton/Orange/Richmond/R ockingham/Rowan/ Rutherford/Stokes/Surry/Warren/Wayne Our list of counties for which the NC State Archives has poor relief and/or poorhouse records includes: Alexander/Ashe/Bertie/Beaufort/Buncombe/Carteret/Chatham/Cherokee/Cleveland/ Craven/Currituck/Davie/Edgecombe/Granville/Guilford/Hyde/Iredell/Lincoln/Mon tgomery/Nash/NewHanover/Northampton/Orange/Pasquotank/Perquimans/Person/Polk /Rowan/Rutherford/ Sampson/Stanley/Surry/Union/Wake/Wayne/Yadkin We have provided more historical notes from the archives on the page with their holdings listed. DIRECTIONS: At the homepage (link above) click on POORHOUSES BY STATE, then on NORTH CAROLINA on the table of states. If you will scroll down to the section on "Local Notes", you will find the poorhouse list; and then scrolling down to "Records", you will see the archives holdings list. These entries are marked with yellow NEW arrows. (NOTE: If you have visited the site recently, you may have to click on REFRESH on your browser to see the new information.) There are other pages on the site which may give you some interesting perspective on poorhouses. They are off the homepage and include: the HISTORY page and the LETTER TO GENEALOGISTS as well as FEATURED ARTICLES. There are great tips for researching poorhouse records for yourself on the RECORDS page; and you might want to subscribe to our (almost) monthly newletter (which you can do in the lower right corner of the homepage). The information on our site will only grow through the submissions of generous readers. If you would like to e-mail me ... please do so off-list because I cannot maintain subscriptions to as many lists as we post messages on. (You can use an e-mail link off one of our web pages.) We hope you enjoy the site! Thanks, Linda Crannell (aka=The Poorhouse Lady)

He sent me the letter that you sent him. I had not heard from you of along time and was much gratified to know that a kind Providence had preserved us and also that you had some thought of coming to see me. Our long silence seems to manifest that we have forgotten each other but I assure you my brother that I often think of you and would be vary glad to see you but I never shall unless you come out for I have had great fortiegue in moveing west and coming back to Georgia. I expect to reach home about the first January and do not expect ever to return even to Georgia. Texas is a good country. Land is plenty at one dollar for acre and I have all of my children with me which is ten in No six sons four daughters three of them is married and is settled by me and we are all doing well. My youngest child is a daughter five year old. If your children and Brother W. Griffin was in Texas they would likely do better than they ever can where they are. I moved for the sake of my children. They are all well pleased and have that of doing well in prospect but I pursuade no one to move but should be glad to see any of my relatives in Texas. I suppose that it is some twelve hundred miles or more from your house to mine but as far as it is I do hope that we still communicate by letter to each other oftener than we have bin in the habit of doing. I want you to write to me upon the reception of this and write me every thing about your self and children and W. Griffin and his that will interest me. I want to know how you are all getting along. Direct your letter to Pine Hill P. O. Panola (marked out) Rush County Texas. I must say to you that your old mother thinks hard that you never write to her. I therefore request you to write to her. Receive this my brother as a token of the high regard and brotherly love I have for you and yours. Farewell. Rigdon Heath Remember me to brother Griffin. He is now doing similar tests to see whether any males are descendants from the Danish Vikings. As you know it has been recorded that the Fairfaxes descended from a Danish Viking. I wrote to the professor and he is very interested and has offered to do DNA tests on any Fairfaxes willing to assist. I am presently gathering names and addresses of volunteers. Later each will receive a small pack and all that will be necessary is to take a swab from inside the mouth with a cotton bud (so it won't hurt!!!) and post it to the professor. To date I have eight Fairfaxes in the UK and wondered if you and your brother would be willing to join us.I have your addresses as - 2629 Somerset Drive, Nashville,Tennesse, TN347217 and 225 Woodmaker Court, Nashville, TN3724 If you like to join us will you please let me know and confirm the addresses (It will be interesting to see of our DNAs are similar!) The cemetery was also known as the Old Pink Hill Cemetery. It is fenced in and is kept in good repair. A few years ago several tree's fell during a storm and distroyed some tombstones. 3. Tracy, Neat job!!!. The pictures are great - they don't show the peeling paint and plaster that I saw in Oct. I didn't even know the upstairs was open to the public - everytime I have been in it, the upstairs was closed off. Certainly did not know about the doll collection. Just discovered the other day the DAR has beautiful doll clothes from the 1700's for purchase. Harmony Hall is a pretty house but sorely in need of a lot of repairs. The money from the sale of the two books go directly towards these repairs. Many thanks for this contribution. 3. Need help on my Reel line. According to the work of Mildred Reel Buck on the Reels: Peter Reel I died in 1739 in Craven. Witnesses to his will were Simon Bright and Richard Evans. Peter's wife was named Mary. Peter's mother, Hannah, was married to a William Adams of Hyde County when Peter died. Peter's children were Mary, Elizabeth, Peter, James, Joshua and Sarah. Daughters Mary Reel married John Gatlin ca 1749 and sister Elizabeth married Edward Gatlin ca 1743. What I have seen on the list over a period of time indicates that the Gatlin's were not married to the Reel Sisters. Does anyone have any idea how or why the Reels connected to the Gatlin. I believe the Early Reel family lived on Swift Creek in Craven County. Jane Phillips God Bless America!

    1. [NCLENOIR] Gatlin - Lovick - Caswell 1800
    2. J. & S. Gaddis
    3. Of interest to Caswell and Gatlin researchers: According to the information at website http://www.carolinacuzins.org/CH-govrc.htm, Susannah Caswell married John Lovick ca 1794, they had a daughter named Sarah Lovick, and John Lovick died ca 1899. Also, Susannah remarried to John Gatlin. A look at the 1800 Lenoir Co census reveals that a John Lovick was a head of household in that year, and that the household included 2 males 27-45 years old, 1 male under 10, 1 female 16-26 (Susannah Caswell?), 1 female under 10 (Sarah Lovick?), and 11 slaves. Could this be the household of John Lovick and Susannah Caswell or that of another John Lovick? One of the older males would have been John Lovick, but who would the other older male have been and who was the young male - a son perhaps? Susannah Caswell would have been 25 years old during that census and the daughter Sarah would have been under 10, in keeping with the census figures. That same year, 1800, John Gatlin appears in the census with 1 male 26-45 (John Gatlin), a female 16-26 (possibly a wife who died?), and a male under 10 (a son?). Could John Gatlin also have been married before he and Susannah Caswell married and could he have had a son about whom we have no knowledge? In 1810, John Lovick does not appear in the census and is presumed dead. John Gatlin does appear and by this time is married to Susannah Caswell. Gatlin's household includes 1 male 26-45 (John Gatlin), 1 male 16-26 (who?), 1 male 10-16 (who - the same one who was under 10 in the earlier census?), 2 males under 10 (documented sons John Slade Gatlin b. 1806 and Richard C. Gatlin b. 1809), 1 female 26-45 (Susannah Caswell), 1 female 16-26 (who?), 1 female 10-16 (who, possibly Sarah Lovick?), 1 female under 10 (documented daugher Susan Jefferson Gatlin b. 1803 d. 1814), and 18 slaves. In the 1820 census, John Gatlin's household includes himself (age 45+), Susannah Caswell (age 45+) his 2 documented sons (both 10-15 years old), an undocumented male (16-18), an undocumented male (18-25), 2 documented daughters (under 10, Mary M. Gatlin b. 1811 and Sarah Catherine Gatlin b.1814), an undocumented female (10-15), an undocumented female (16-25, maybe Sarah Lovick?), 11 male slaves and 14 females slaves. In short, given our knowledge of John Gatlin and Susannah Caswell, the census records reveal in their family or household 2 young males and 1 or 2 young females about whom we have no information. Some Questions: When was John Lovick born? Did Susannah Caswell (1775-1843) have a son with John Lovick as well as a daughter? When exactly did John Lovick die? Whatever became of the daughter Sarah Lovick? Was John Gatlin (1769-1836) married and have a son prior to marrying Susannah Caswell? Who were all the children of John Gatlin, both by Susannah Caswell and any other wife; and of John Lovick? Jim Gaddis

    3. While on the subject of Maplewood Cemetery I need to ask if there is anyone out there researching the Clemmons Family. My GGG grandmother Axie Smith, second wife of Nathan Hill of Deep Run, is supposed to be buried out there. Axie's Grandson, Clint Simmons is still living, and according to him (and my Grandmother) Axie remarried to a man with surname Clemmons after Nathan Hill died. Unclke Clint says she is buried in Maplewood, but does not remeber exactly where, (Although he claims to have been to her gravesite many times before) I have called the city, and they are unable to locate a grave for an Axie Clemmons I have walked the cemetery many times, but for those who have not been there, it is quite a large cemetery and not in the best area of town, so I never spend long there. I have still not located a death record for Axie or a Marriage record for her and her second husband....... ALSO, Found Axie in census records with her father Hogan Smith and his wife Nancy, but have not been able to find anything beyond that. Can say that she had a brother named Owen Smith who married a Cunningham (Mary I think) Sound familiar to anyone??? I found the birth year and the death date from Eliza McGill Waters entertaining book on Fool John. She claimed to have started taking notes on her family as a child. A bunch of my early Rouse information came from either her book or from Russell King, bless his heart, wherever he is. He and Eliza are descendants of John William "Fool John" Rouse (1836-1917). 3. Linda, First, welcome to the list - suspect you are on the Lenoir List. A bunch of us have tried to redo the Rouse line - without a lot of success. A few things have come out - some with proof and some just circumstantial. The holes in this family are numerous. The children of John and Winifred are a little shakey. I suspect the last 5 sons you have listed are probably correct although there is nothing to prove it. When Winifred died, her obit in the Recorder stated she had 5 living sons and the daughter SMithy. Sure wish they had named them. Bennett is a proven son of Noah Rouse I so he is not a son of John and Winnifred. Jonathan - that is my line. There is minor circumstantial to indicate he was the son of Simon I but it is certainly not proven. Not sure I have ever seen that Alexander SMith's wife was a Sutton. Have you seen anything to document that information? If true, that would indicate she was the daughter of John Sutton. Many thanks for this information - some it I did not have. Martha Hi, I'm new to the page, but I do have a little, for what its worth, on the Rouse line that has come from the Lenoir Co. page and other sources through the past few years. 3. The cemetery where this James Davis is buried is actually called the James Daves Public Cemetery outside of Pink Hill. It is located off of Pleasant Hill Road behind two story white home. (also Davis land) Pink Hill was once located here before it moved to it's present location. The cemetery was also known as the Old Pink Hill Cemetery. It is fenced in and is kept in good repair. A few years ago several tree's fell during a storm and distroyed some tombstones. I was there when they were cleaning the trees out but haven't been back to see if the stones were repaired or replaced. 3. Audrey, I too was trying to find a lot in the Maplewood Cemetery. I called the monument co near the cemetery and I was given the phone #' of 2 people I believe at the courthouse. I have them scribbled on a piece of paper, and I just happened to keep the paper. The gentleman at the Monument company, his name was Jim and his # is 252-522-3818. I wish I could be of more assistance. Good Luck. Mary Jane Poole
