I should have anticipated the problem of lookups from the Heritage Book as soon as the Index started to be posted and addressed it before the fact - I apologize. The purpose of the Index is twofold a) to advise people if the names they are interested in actually appear in the book before they purchase it b) to sell the books. The Historical Association over ordered and this is our effort to assist in the sale of these books so Vol 2 can be published. As Tracy stated, this is a HUGE project taking many hours of work by a number of people. It is taking Tracy about a hour per letter to reformat and post and we greatly appreciate the time of these volunteers. Both of these books have a copyright and since they are for sale, it would be in violation of copyright laws to run an ENTIRE article to the lists. That goes for any book under copyright. Thank you for your understanding. Martha
Would someone that has the Lenoir Co. Heritage Book mind looking up info on Charles Buchanon. I don't have that book and would be very grateful. Thanks in advance. Donna

I agree that the documents that should go on the county site, wills, deeds, bible records should be eliminated from Dobbers and put only the extra things there. I have had many contact me that they had seen the Uzzell and Wiggins information there. I could have put it on my own web site but when I re-do it, I want to put a link to Dobbers, but don't know when that is going to be??? Rose ----- Original Message ----- From: Martha Marble Sent: Monday, January 28, 2002 8:45 PM To: NCGREENE-L@rootsweb.com Subject: [NCGREENE] Dobbers website This past summer Patty started to "clean up" Dobbers and made a lot of headway but there is more to be done. Would like some imput from the lists. The original purpose of Dobbers was to provide a place for things that could not go on the archives or the county site. Since the county site was changed we have sort of ignored it and other than queries, most of us have not posted to the other boards. I used to post wills, deeds, etc to it and also to the archives but not any more. It is just the query board that is active now. Dobbers was suppose to be for family information, announcements, special projects, or whatever you wanted to post on it. The archives is in place for primary documents. A lot of those primary documents are also on Dobbers and to me that is duplication. We have a link to the archives and to the county sites. I am inclined to eliminate the primary documents since we have the link to the archives. Old Dobbers was set up to be a part of the Greene and Lenoir lists with imput from list members - that means EACH of you. Before we start to make more changes, we would like some imput. Speak up or forever hold your piece. The first thing Guy is trying to learn is how to upload the Free Press pictures. The text for the Industrial issue is on archives in toto but many of the pictures still have not been uploaded. This is a learning process for him, so patience. Just found this by accident on the Marshall GenForum and thought some of you might be interested if you live near Greensboro. Martha Many who subscribe to this list ask questions about the basic lifestyle and beliefs of their Quaker ancestors, and many of you have Quaker connections in North Carolina. There is to be a study program at Guilford College on June 9-14, 2002 that may be of interest to you. Exploring Carolina Quaker Crossroads is a weeklong residential study program for adults that examines the Quakers who settled Piedmont, North Carolina. Attendees will stay on the campus of Guilford College (est. as New Garden Boarding School in 1837). The famous confrontation of Lord Cornwallis and Gen. Nathaniel Green, the Battle of Guilford Courthouse, took place nearby at what is now a National Park, and many soldiers who died in the battle are buried in the New Garden cemetery. The old meetinghouse was used as a hospital. Emphasis will be on how the beliefs and practices of Friends helped to shape North Carolina. Activities include a dramatization of Levi Coffin, the President of the Underground Railroad, visits to the Mendenhall Plantation, a Quaker pottery at New Salem, the Cane Creek/Snow Camp historical area, stops at Springfield, Centre, New Garden and Cane Creek meetings; and the Springfield Museum of Early Domestic Life. Also there will be opportunities to do genealogical research in the Friends Historical Collection at Guilford College, where the original minutes of most N. C. meetings are kept, as well as published histories and files on many Quaker families. It is the largest repository of Quaker records in the South. Other nearby attractions are Old Salem, a historical restoration of a Moravian town; and the NC Zoological Parknear Asheboro. Mountains and beach are about 3 hrs. away in opposite directions. The full cost is $475 if registration is made before March 1; after March 1, $500.Price includes deposit, double occupancy room, meals, and all fees. Single rooms extra. Registrations accepted at or send $100 registration fee to Friends Center at Guilford College, attn Sara Beth Terrell at the address below. Space is limited. Registrations will be accepted until May 20. Registration fee is fully refundable until April 1. A confirmation packet with additional information will be mailed after your registration is received. If you have questions, contact: Sara Beth Terrell Friends Center at GuilfordCollege 5800 W. Friendly Ave Greensboro NC 27410 336-316-2296 sterrell@guilford.edu

Well, Guy has finally joined us on the lists but he didn't have much of a choice given his new assignment as co-webmaster for Old Dobbers. He has so many of the eastern NC Archives sites and gets so much email, he had not joined and we just forwarded posts to him. In case some of you don't know who Guy is, he is the file manager for most of the eastern NC Archives sites including Greene and Lenoir, works full time, lives in Raleigh and is now the co-webmaster for Old Dobbers. Most of his free time is spent helping all of us by posting files. We are all indebted to him. Welcome, Guy. Martha

Larry and folks, The only place I've seen the NC mortality census extracted and published are in a series of 13 volumes that cover NC counties for 1850, 1860, 1870 and 1880. A few libraries have them, including the National Genealogical Society. I would offer to do a look-up, but the library has been relocated this winter from Arlington, VA, to St. Louis or some place. They are supposed to have the books catalogued and available again later in February, so you might be able to request an inter-library loan at that time. The original publisher, Sandra Lee Almasy, still sells them if you can't wait that long. See http://www.kensington-glen.com/ . However, I recently checked with her to get a copy of a volume I need, and she indicated several were out of stock until she has her new printer set up. Good luck in your research! - Jim Spencer
Does anyone know if the mortality schedule of the census have been extracted to one record? ____________________ Whether you think you can or you think you can't ----you are right. Gayle L.
