I am new to these lists, so I thought I would share my interests: I am a descendant of John WEST of Craven County (near the Lenoir line), who died in 1800. Martha, I have little concrete to add re Persis Westbrook Allen. The only reference to her in the Charles Westbrook Bible is: "Persis Allen Deseast this Life the 15 day of April 1830." I have no solid evidence as to who her parents were. The fact that she is listed in the Charles Westbrook Bible suggests that she was closely related to Charles (and he was of course the son of Moses and Persis Young Westbrook). Her name itself would strongly suggest that she too was a daughter of Moses and Persis. However, there is no Persis Westbrook in a list of births from the CWBible which appears to be a fairly comprehensive list of the children of Moses and Persis. I guess that the absence of her name could be an oversight or perhaps her birthdate was unavailable when the list of births was compiled. Until something more concrete is forthcoming, I couldn't say who Persis's parents were. Jack Martha Marble wrote: > > THought we had figured this out but I don't have her linked. If anyone is working the Miller family, you might want to look at whether Tobias Miller, maybe uncle to Phillip Miller, married Mary Nunn daughter of Francis Nunn II. Dates are right and Phillip Miller married Elizabeth Nunn daughter of Francis III. Francis Nunn II had a daughter Mary but no further information. Tobias and Mary's first child, William was born in 1759 and that William had a son Nunn - his wife was not a Nunn. Martha
Tracy, I'm glad to hear about finding the cemetery in Jones County. If you learn anything about a Cox Cemetery, I'd like to know. I'm looking for Owen B. Cox who died about 1844 and any others of that Jones County family. Jackie Boykin
JACKSON CEMETERY This cemetery is located to the left of Neuse Road on the Casey farm which used to belong to the John Jackson family. It is right on the Neuse River up on a bluff that used to be called Blue Banks. The cemetery is very overgrown and it was not possible to gain entry except right at the edge. It is a large cemetery and said to contain CSA dead from the Battle of Wyse Fork but it is highly unlikely those graves had a stone. According to the local families, at one time, this cemetery was kept up and there were a number of piles of rocks scattered around. The speculation was these rocks marked the graves of the CSA dead but the rocks may have been scattered at some point. We were only able to find three stones at the western edge and this cemetery is not listed at Heritage Place. Canvassed by Tracy Putnam and Martha Mewborn Marble in March 2002 Nancy wife of Simeon Simmons Born July 12 1835 Died April 24, 1895 (said to be the widow of a Jackson) Claudia Bernice Daughter of Jesse and Cattie Vause Born December 4, 1883 Died November 22, 1892 Annie Jones Wife of James F. Jones Born January 21, 1832? Died September 15, 1858? Aged 26 years 7 months 21 days The above stone was on the ground and covered in dirt which made it hard to read especially since we had no cleaning equipment with us. In addition to the above stones, there were several others that were moved some forty years ago and placed in the Vause Cemetery right on the Neuse Road. Among those moved (and on the cemetery list at LCC) John Jackson Born November 28, 1802 Died April 3, 1877 In addition to the stones moved to the Vause Cemetery from the Jackson Cemetery was the stone of Robert Bond Vause who died in the service of CSA and was buried near Bridgeton, Craven County. Robert Bond Vause married Adeline Jackson Vause who was the daughter of the above John Jackson. Robert Bond Vause had a brother James Bryant Vause who may be buried in the Vause Cemetery.

Had to go check to see if everyone had unsubscribed from the lists considering none of you had anything to say for two weeks. Rose told me that MSN has been down nationwide for a couple of days in the event some of you have not received answers to your emails. Suppose to be back up today. Am stealing Brenda's report on the Symposium >Reply-To: "Brenda Stocks" <bstocks@coxnc.rr.com> >From: "Brenda Stocks" <bstocks@coxnc.rr.com> >Several of our Greenville PCFR members attended the Civil War Symposium In >Kinston this weekend. Pickett. We also enjoyed a wonderful lunch at the Broken >Eagle Restaurant in Kinston. We had a good group from the lists - from Greenville, Raleigh, Goldsboro, Williamston and even Md - did not know Mary Jane and her husband were coming until we saw them AFTER lunch. Fun to see so many and put a name to a face. Guy forgot my piece of pecan pie his sister sent to me - accused him of eating it. Tracy and I got a personal tour of the breatworks on our Simmons ancestral land and some cemeteries - one of which is not on the LCC list. It is the Jackson cemetery and someone is interested in it but you are not going to learn much at this point. It is in dreadful shape and we really could not get into it. Only got three stones and the John Jackson stone was moved 30 to 40 years ago with some of the others. A large area and tradition says there were CSA dead buried there with no stone. Would not doubt it. Jane, Tracy, and I spent a day (and I went back) in the Hyatt Collection but did not finish. We got LOTS of goodies both historical and genealogical. Tracy and I spent one day at the archives - Ruth, got that LONG Supreme Court Case and a couple of other short ones, one also a Carr one - and one day at ECU. Also learned a little about Southwest Creek in the Woodington area and the upper reaches of the creek along the Neuse Road. Will take awhile to wade through my almost full notebook and get everything typed and posted. Martha
Sloan put together a nice census file, Nobles/West that went to Arkansas from Lenoir and Jones. Borrowed from another source. Legal. Would you run this on Lenoir and Jones lists ? http://www.rootsweb.com/~usgenweb/nc/lenoir/lenoircensus.htm Guy
