    1. [NCLENOIR] Life Spans
    2. Fairfax, Dan
    3. A little humor for the Holiday!!! Happy Easter! Dan =================== Subject: FW: Life Spans On the first day God created the cow. God said, "You must go to the field with the farmer all day long and suffer under the sun, have calves and give milk to support the farmer I will give you a life span of sixty years." The cow said, "That's a kind of a tough life you want me to live for sixty years. Let me have twenty years and I'll give back the other forty." And God agreed. On the second day, God created the dog. God said, "Sit all day by the door of your house and bark at anyone who comes in or walks past. I will give you a life span of twenty years." The dog said, "That's too long to be barking. Give me ten years and I'll give back the other ten." So God agreed sigh. On the third day God created the monkey. God said, "Entertain people, do monkey tricks, make them laugh. I'll give you a twenty year life span." Monkey said, "How boring, monkey tricks for twenty years? I don't think so. Dog gave you back ten, so that's what I'll do too, okay?" And God agreed again. On the fourth day God created man. God said, "Eat, sleep, play, enjoy. Do nothing, just enjoy. I'll give you twenty years." Man said, "What? Only twenty years? No way man. Tell you what, I'll take my twenty, and the Forty cow gave back, and the ten dog gave back and the ten monkey gave back. That makes eighty, okay?" Okay," said God. "You've got a deal." So that's why for the first twenty years we eat, sleep, play, enjoy, and do nothing; for the next forty years we slave in the sun to support our family; for the next ten years we do monkey tricks to entertain our grandchildren; and for the last ten years we sit in front of the house and bark at everybody.

    1. [NCLENOIR] CAPS / CAPPS Query - CAN YOU HELP?
    2. Hello Everyone! I am trying to locate our CAPPS family origins. I have been told before coming to Johnston & then Cumberland County that our Capps lived in WAYNE County (around Goldsboro) and LENOIR County around KINSTON. I have seen our surname spelled CAPS and CAPPS. I am requesting anyone with any knowledge of them or resources listing them, to PLEASE contact me!!! I am trying to finish our family history before my Great Aunt passes on (She is 85 and spent 30 years researching the "old fashioned" way-going to courthouses, cemetaries etc...) Her sight is failing as well as her health so I have taken over this task. My Great Great grandfather was HARVEY CAPS / CAPPS (spelled both ways.) He married Unknown PHILLIPS. I descend through their son, WILLIAM HENRY CAPPS, 1933-4 - 1916; who married Nancy Ann SMITH 1935 - 1925-8 and settled in Cumberland County, where I now reside. Harvey probably had an older brother JEREMIAH CAPS / CAPPS, who was listed beside him in the 1830 WAYNE County Census. William Henry may have had a sister ELIZABETH and possibly a younger brother JOHN CAPS /CAPPS. I estimate Harvey being born circa 1806 - 1810. If anyone has even a clue to these persons or knows anything- no matter how insignificant it seems -PLEASE inform me!!! I do have a few hundred of HARVEY CAPS / CAPPS descendants on file for anyone who can tie into this line! Would love to find distant cousins & share data to inform about our CAPPS family members! Thank you so much for your assistance! I am currently disabled and forums such as these are an absolutely wonderful research tool!!! Gratefully, Ms. Nancy J. Capps

Belinda, you might want to run this to the Bertie List. >From William (Mickey) Elmore There is a small letter in the Clellon Sutton Papers I have always found intriguing, though not conclusive "Sally, you wrote to us that Ben was Draughted but was not able (torn edge) march. I should be very glad to know whether he is gone (short word scratched out) or know (torn edge) ha ?? hole ?? not ?? heard nothing from you since. I expect to be Draughted now soon but God only knows whether I shall or not Sept 22nd 1790 (here a mostly-illegible word of about 3 letters that might be sis or sir or something else) This is to let you know that I remain yr loving Brother till death Wm. Parrott H (rest of signature is guesswork) N.B. I have no the time to write anymore. Only I desire to be remembered to all friends (next mostly unreadable and marked through - there may have been another line or more which was neatly cut off long ago) This letter in conjunction with the deeds found in Duplin Co, the estate records for William Hardy in Bertie Co and the determination on the ownership of the William and Sarah Sowell Hardy Bible, leaves little doubt that Sarah wife of Benjamin (Oxley) Sutton was the daughter of William and Sarah Sowell Hardy of Bertie County. William Parrott Hardy was also their son. I believe the line of William Hardy is proven and can be found on Belinda's website. I have information on the Sowell family from the Bertie List several years ago. This also gives additional circumstantial evidence that John Sutton of Lenoir County came right out of Bertie Co. THe Joyner Library at East Carolina University has a Manuscript Division on the 4th floor which has marvelous originals and copies for historical and genealogical research. I have not seen the Turnage Collection but Roger Kammerer gave me these notes he had made. Don't know if the Will is actually in it or just notes. Either you would have to go to the library or find someone to look it up for you. Martha

    1. Re: [NCLENOIR] West and related families
    2. Robert C West
    3. Ann, Thanks for your response. I have not made the GOODING connection, but perhaps you can enlighten me. Here are the DAUGHETY (so many spellings of that name!) and EVANS connections I have identified thus far: Alexander W. WEST (1826 - ?) = Elizabeth DAUGHETY (c. 1829 - ?) Alexander was the son of Levi WEST and Sarah JACKSON (second wife). In the 1880 census, it would seem that he had remarried to another Elizabeth, based on her age, but sometimes the census has mistakes in this area. Also, in the 1880 census his household includes Laura GOODING, 17, his neice. I don't know the connection. Sophia Alice WEST (1857 - ?) = Jesse Frederick EVANS (1854 - 1926) I just learned about this marriage from an Evans researcher. Sophia Alice was the daughter of Kinnian Terrence WEST and Teresa WATSON (second wife) and granddaughter of Levi WEST and Wealthy BRUTON (first wife). Lenore Elizabeth WEST (c. 1868 - ?) = Joe E. EVANS (1862 - 1921) I learned about this marriage from the same Evans researcher. Lenore (Lena, Mammy) was the daughter of Terrence Lafayette WEST and Caroline RHEM, and granddaughter of Kinnian Terrence WEST and Teresa WATSON. From the same EVANS researcher, apparently Laura Frances GOODING married William A. Evans in 1883. Perhaps this is the same Laura as I mentioned above. Do these connections fit in with your research? Can you enlighten me more on any of this? I would be happy to share more and add detail if you are interested.
