Jane and others, It appears the Southern Historical Collection has a number of letters written by soldiers - mostly Yankees - during the Battles of Kinston. Ya'll might want to make a list and go spend the day reading them. They don't show up when you search for Lenoir Co but they do when you search for "Kinston". http://www.lib.unc.edu/mss/shcgl.html I have not run a search for hangings but maybe they have something on that event also. Barney Leary B. 1813 D.? served in Civil War but I am unsure if he resided there. He had a son George Thomas Leary M. Rillie Padgett. George and Rillie's son was George Nixon Leary. George Nixon was married to Maybell(Dolly Caison) and later to Virginia Mobley. Maybell had two other sisters that I know of Francis(Fannie) and Nolie. This is pretty common knowledge, but, in case anyone is interested... BRIGADIER GENERAL RICHARD CASWELL GATLIN The only Confederate General from Lenoir County was Brig. Gen. Richard Caswell Gatlin. He was born 18 Jan 1809 in Lenoir County, NC to John S. Gatlin and Susannah Caswell, daughter of Governor Richard Caswell. He graduated from West Point in1832; served as a career military officer in Florida, Mexico, and the American West; and resigned his commission in Arkansas in 1861 to join the Cofederate Army in NC. After the War, he returned to Arkansas where he farmed. He died at Mount Nebo, AR on 8 Sep 1896 and is buried at the National Cemetery in Fort Smith, AR. His wife was Mary A Gibson and they had a daughter, Mary Knox Gatlin, who married U of NC geologist Collier Cobb. ----- Original Message ----- From: Martha Marble <mmarble@erols.com> To: <NCLENOIR-L@rootsweb.com> Sent: Saturday, April 20, 2002 9:45 AM Subject: Re: [NCLENOIR] new postings > Thanks for the information and hit that one next trip down. Clair, Would agree with you. Too bad it did not give the name or any information on the other tract or a better description of The Red House. Guess I just assumed that Croom had bought it when Caswell's land was sold. By 1828 William Croom did own the Red House and most of Caswell's peoperties, but this sale to Joseph Green must have been in response to the following court order: 1.SOURCE: Hillsborough District Court Records DSCR 204.508.2 Original at North Carolina Archives Transcribed (as best I could read it) and Submitted by Clair Hadley STATE of NORTH CAROLINA To the Sheriff of Lenoir County Greetings:Whereas we by our writ of Fieri Facias did command you that of the goods and chattels, lands and tenements of Richard Caswell Dec'd in the hands of Winston Caswell Ecr (?) & Dolham Caswell Ex you should cause to be made the sum of one thousand ninety four pounds 15 which lately in our Superior Court of law, held for the district of Hillsborough at the courthouse in Hillsborough The Governor for our use recovered against them the said Winston & Dolham Ex & Ex as aforesaid as(and?) also the endorsed fees or costs and charges filed in said suit expended, whereof the said Winston and Dolham are liable and convicted, as to us appears of record, and that you should have the said monies before the Judges of our Superior Court of law, held for the district of Hillsboro on the sixth day of October 1796 and you on that day, having returned to us on our said writ of Fieri Facias, that you had levied on all the Lands of Richard Caswell Decd lying in Lenoir County, to wit, the Red House & plantation and the adjoining lands, Newington do d do. The URL for Old Dobbers is http://freepages.genealogy.rootsweb.com/~paday/dobbers/index.htm This site was started to house mostly family information that is not appropriate on either the GenWeb or the archives sites. It is not a place for primary information or queries except the Dobbs Queries. For the past year, we have been struggling with the problem of a webmaster. Guy took it over but he does not know HTML which is what that site uses. Tracy has been working hard to get some new items posted but she is pretty stretched, as is Guy. We have done a little housekeeping and will do more down the road. We have deleted all the primary information found on the various archives sites and links. The link to the Lenoir, Greene, and Dobbs Archives remains as does the Dobbs Query page. There was too much duplication and still is but we are working on it. All of the pictures for the Industrial Issue have been posted - many thanks to the scanners, and to Tracy and Guy for their hard work. We found one Collection that never made it to the Greene Archives - the Hooker Collection has now been posted on Greene and deleted from Old Dobbers. THe Reunions site is available to any of you who would like to post their Reunion information. We are aware there is one old one on it but Guy wanted to leave it just to have something on the site. Tis the time of year for family Reunions so send us your information. We need to update the Author's Corner - too many books not on it. ALso, we are changing the name on it slightly to include those people willing to do research and family websites in the area for pay. What is not working is the "What's New" and Tracy is working on it. Soon as it gets "fixed" we want to go back to the Common Surnames and start adding more. We will start with the surnames already posted and add additional researchers and then do additional surnames. Let's get the additional Common Surnames up to date and then we will tackle the new Family Research Projects section. There is a lot waiting in the wings. Tracy did an update last week and it took her over 10 hours so that is a really slow and time consuming section. Martha
Thanks Martha, as always for your resounding support!! So far, for the most part, the results of the survey I sent out have been very favorable, however, as you stated, we need the local support to make this a reality, and for the most part, the majority of the people who have responded are from out of state, or in state but out of the area. So I echo Martha's sentiments, If you are local, and have an interest, help us to get the word out... We will definitely need local folks to pull this all together. A written version of this survey has also been placed out at Heritage Place, and although only a small amount of people have responded thus far, they have responded favorably. I will leave the survey out there for a few more weeks. I will keep the lists informed of what is going on, and what the eventual plan will be (or will not be) I can tell you that if this comes to be, I am committed to putting whatever effort is needed into making it happen... Many thanks to those of you who have already responded!!! We greatly appreciate the Historical Preservation Group's decision to have a Genealogical Committee, chaired by Tracy. This idea was discussed when Jane, Pat, and Cindy came to DC in Jan on Civil War Business. This organization is new and the primary focus at this point is the preservation of the two Civil War Battlefield sites in Lenoir County - part the Wyse Fork site was in Jones County. The Board is swamped and learning their way and they have done a fantastic job in a very short time period. Local support has been strong and we hope to build on that support. Eventually they hope to spread out to incorporate projects like cemetery preservation, but that is down the road. The "gentleman's agreement" was if they would appoint a Genealogical Committee, the organization would not be expected to do any work at this time. Tracy, as the Chair, with support from the local community would take on this task. We greatly appreciate Tracy taking on this task but she can't do it by herself and don't forget she is also the webmaster for the Group, Jones and Craven County in addition to now doing work for Old Dobbers. We have learned from Pitt County Family Researchers that it is the local members who do all the work - the rest of us get to enjoy all their labors. So those of you who live in the area, please talk to your family, neighbors and friends to see if they would be interested. There are a number of good reasons to have a local Genealogical Society, including a formal host for an Old Dobbers Reunion that these lists discussed having several years ago. There was no local umbrella in the area at that time to put together such a Reunion. Stay tuned for more on this project. We do appreciate Jane and her Board for their support in the field of genealogy - they are all members of these lists - and especially to Tracy for her leadership. Martha
Hello all, The Historical Preservation Group is exploring the possibility of starting a Genealogical Society here in Lenoir County. If it comes to be it will be a tri-county society (Lenoir, Greene, Jones) and will probably only start out with quarterly meetings. The idea would also be to put out a quarterly newsletter. The society would be open to both local and out of town (out of state) members. Before we go through the work of starting a society though, we need to make sure there is local support for it. So we are taking a survey to try and determine the interest level. If anyone out there would be interested in joining such a society I would appreciate it if you would let me know. Please respond directly to me( nccuzins@hotmail.com ) with the following information: your name: where do you live: If you are local, would you be interested in being on the planning committee?? Comments: ************************************************************** Thanks everyone for your time.
