    3. That's a very good point--slaves were never named in the census, even on the slave schedules. Most people forget that in some communities as many as 10% of their "black" (which might include mulatto) population was free. 3. Tammi, I've seen the messages you have been posting recently, as well as the other messages that have been posted in return by others. I don't have any Lane connections myself, so I can't add any data to what you are finding about John Lane and his ancestors. But, I wondered how you concluded that "Dannel" and the others you named in the John Lane household of 1860 were "slaves." As I am interested in anything going on in Greene County during the 1700 and 1800's, I took a look at the 1860 Greene County Census, Bull Head District, Page No. 4. What I saw indicates that Dannel Artes, a free black male aged 40 and a ditcher by trade, lived alone in Household #27. Back in the Household #26, the John Lane household, in addition to the Lane family members, there were three free black males aged 17, 13, and 5 as well as three black females aged 12, 8, and 7, all with the last name Artes. In the previous Household #25, the Silas Bryant household, in addition to the Bryant family members, there were two mulatto males aged 16 and 14 with the last name Artes. None of these Artes, according to the 1860 census, were slaves in 1860. Had they not been free blacks or mulattoes, they would not have been listed in that census. So, the "Dannel" who went off to the Civil War with Christopher Lane was apparently black, but not a slave. (An alternate spelling of the name Artes is probably Artis. There are quite a few people with the last name of Artis in the area today.) 3. Hi John, Great to hear from you! You seem to have a lot of info on Lanes :) I've only just found my gg-grandfather JOHN LANE's name. At least am about 95% sure its him. Before this, I didnt even know my gg-grandfather's name as even being John, since no one in the family knew. So i've been searching for months and months(off and on, I get discouraged easily *laugh*) The "DANNEL" i mentioned was a slave in JOHN LANE's household. Dannel's father had the same name below him on the 1860 census though he lived in another household(or alone) I guess was his father, he had same name and was older, in his 40's i believe and lists his race as black also. So maybe they were named after the DANNEL's if he worked for them earlier. I know they took names of the ones who had them sometimes. Two of the slave children in JOHN LANE's household were named Juley and Washington. Juley or Julia was also JOHN LANE's daughter's name, and Washington was his son's (my g-grandfather) George's middle name. I have a list of names i've been looking at trying to find John's father. There was Levin Lane i had written down, from Pender or New Hanover counties, but he wasnt in the right area. Also a will for GEORGE LANE 1808 lists him having a son James..sometimes James and John were used interchangeably...though if John was born about 1802-1806, his father would be pretty old then i guess...unless he died young...anyway, thanks for information...anything is helpful, since i have NO idea at this point who JOHN LANE's parents were...i only have John's wife's name as MARY, no maiden name..i looked some at JOEL LANE of Raleigh, but seems his family was pretty well known and seems there would be more information documented if JOHN was his descendent. Though my grandfather used to drive his wagon to Raleigh but no one in family knows why or if he visited anyone there. So maybe relatives there, i dont know. Thanks! 3. Hi Sue, Yes, JOHN LANE was in the 1860 census i found, listed with MARY and the children, plus 6 slave names listed in the household. The slave known as 'Dannel' had gone off with Christopher Lane, my gg-uncle, in the civil war for some reason. Christopher was a POW for awhile then ended up being 'exchanged' and later died of disease at Fort Pulaski before war's end. When that happened, Dannel or Daniel(not sure if just wrong spelling) came home to Bull Head and let the family know he had died. There seemed to be a good relationship with the slaves. I'm not sure they were treated as slaves, since in the 1860 census it shows Dannel's father in the next household and shows him having property of approx. $1000 value(hard to read), as though he got paid. I'll look at what i can find on Samson Lane. Thanks for giving me that info to look into, Sue. Tammi __________________________________ Do you Yahoo!? Yahoo! Finance Tax Center - File online. 3. Thanks to some of you from this list, I've been able to finally find my gg-grandfather's name. It has to be the JOHN LANE from the Greene county census. He was listed on the 1850 census and it showed he had children named CHRISTOPHER and GEORGE(my g-grandfather)as well as other children listed. I always like a few more things to make sure and found the proof in the 1860 census. I found the township BULL HEAD and that's where my family came from. It didnt tell the township area in the 1850 census, just the county of Greene. So that helped knowing. Also my aunt Winifred said that my grandfather WILLIAM LANE had mentioned how his Uncle Christopher had gone off to the Civil War and had taken a slave with him by the name of "DANIEL" he believed. Well in the 1860 census it shows belonging to the same household a black man named "DANNEL" it looks like. He was 17 at that time. So i'm basically sure i've finally found my gg-grandfather's name. He was married to MARY LANE who was about 10 years older than him. JOHN LANE was born about 1802-1806, somewhere around there. If anyone has any idea who his father might be or where i could look, it would be appreciated. His children's names were ANGELINE, JULEY or JULIA, MARY, GEORGE, CHRISTOPHER, and possibly a JOSEPH who was on the 1850 census, but not the 1860. Thank you for letting me know about the John Lane on the 1850 census. I've forgotten who sent me the information, but i do appreciate it much! Tammi __________________________________ Do you Yahoo!?
