    3. Congratulations list members on solving the "Kinston" pictures on ebay mystery. It was really fun following that bit of detective work. I have another mystery for you. The North Carolina Room at East Carolina University in Greenville, NC has the Kinston Free Press on microfilm. The years from 1905-1913 are missing. Does anyone know if there was a gap in the publication of that newspaper? I have emailed the library, but have not heard from them yet. Thanks Jackie Boykin

    3. Evelyn This is great that you identified the buildings. Did I detect a bit of nostalgia? I have to admit that I have never seen the old downtown of Jacksonville, so my impression of the town was just what one sees from the highways that were built to bypass the town — now lined with strip malls and other businesses. By the way, what was under the little shelter with benches. Was that a spring? 3. I wonder why any other county would be advertising a county fair for Lenoir County. Didn't most counties have their own county fairs? As I remember, Kinston had some of the larger buildings in Eastern NC, at least in the surrounding counties. I don't think they would advertise the county fair for Kinston in Raleigh or Wilmington. There is a plaque on one of the stores in one of the street pictures. is there any way to enlarge that section of the photo to be able to read it? I know an architect who is in downtown Kinston. Maybe he can help to identify some of the buildings, if they still exist (realizing that there may have been exterior changes to the store fronts and facades over the years. Will try to contact him. Has anyone contacted the Lenoir County Library to see if they have similar photos in their photo collection? Also, has anyone checked the Lenoir County Heritage book to see if any similar street scenes are shown? 3. I saw the same things in those pictures that Bob saw. I live in Lenoir County and Kinston is my hometown, so something in those pictures should be familiar to me if they indeed were taken in Kinston. I don't think they were, however. What probably led to the assumption that they were of sites in Kinston is the banner hung over the street in "D401" advertising the County Fair in Kinston, N. C. But, in 1926, banners such as that could have been used in all the nearby towns as the means for advertising such an event--much like our billboards today. In the picture "D401," I also noted a building in the right background that appeared to be several stories tall and rather ornate in architecture. Nothing like that in Kinston that I know of. Also, in the right foreground there were some rather blurry street signs or directions signs which I tried to decipher. The top one appears to say "Wilmington" with an arrow pointing in that direction and perhaps a number of miles which I couldn't make out. Finally, the pictures that were taken on a waterfront show too much water for that water to be the Neuse River at Kinston. 3. I don't really know Kinston, so I wouldn't recognize these photos, but "D405" and "D407" show what looks like a school to me (and it appears to be the same building as on the right of "D401"), and behind it is "Bryan King Motor Co." That's as much as I got from them.
