They came on a cattle boat and settled around the area of Speed and Killquick near us. We have been told one married a Faithful family member but had no children. The other married and had many children. I live in Tarboro which is near there. More of our relatives say they were Irish than those who say they were English. In the Edgecombe County deed records, there is a David Harper of Norfolk County, Virginia. He died and their children became orphans in 1784. I proved he married Mary Manning of Norfolk County, VA because she was the mother of four boys with the same names--David, Robert, Reuben and James. The Manning family have their family names on www.familysearch.org There I found they had left more of their children in Norfolk County, VA. One was a William Harper. The Mannings had money and owned property in the Norfolk County, VA area. Our Harpers were poor, very dep! andable, hard working and some were carpenters. Some married women with money. My grandmother was a Fountain and wealthy. Our oldest cousin was told our Harpers came from the Norfolk, Virginia area. I still do not have proof of a connection but this family fits what we have been told. My oldest uncle was James Richard Harper, Sr. Before my father and aunt died , they told us our Harpers were Irish. When we went to London, England, I looked in the telephone book and did not find Harpers. There were many in Scotland when we went there. My grandfather, Franklin Harper, was the son of Stephen H. Harper. We think the H. stands for Henry, but have no proof. Many in our family have researched and died but never found out who Stephen H. Harper's parents were. He married Nancy Hainey, then Mahala Morgan. Anything on the internet about them is what I put there. They were born in Edgecombe County, N. C. so his parents would have been living in Edgecombe County when he was born in 1826. Boy, would I love to find a connection with other Harpers! I am working on a Harper book centered around Harper deeds, mortages, etc. Since I have retired from teaching, there is time for this. My Aunt Ella would get my cousin to take her to Lenoir County to visit Harpers who were relatives. Now I am checking out Harpers in Lenoir County. One of my grandfather's brothers was Jesse Lawrence Harper. There could be a connection but I do not have much on Lenoir County Harpers. The Harpers had to spend time making a living so they were not political and listed in books for committes, boards, commissioners, etc. I would be glad to pay you for a copy of any Harper information you would be willing to share. My address is: Mrs. Dee Long, 204 Pescud Street, Tarboro, N. C. 27886. My husband is Cecil Earl Long. Please reply. Thank you so much. Dee

Is your Frank the son of Blackledge Harper, son of Jesse Harper? If so, I am a descendant of a brother to Bleckledge, Warren Harper (also son of Jesse Harper). I have much more if this checks out with your records. I also have that the father of above Jesse Harper married Sallie Tyndall. My mother and aunt have done alot of research on the Harpers. They never considered that might have come from Ireland but the researching I am doing is confirming that they very well might have come from Ireland. I look forward to knowing if we are related! 3. Thanks, Rose. This may be one of those cases the introduction is incorrect. The Bible does not give the mother of Susan Jane but the Tull Book gives her as Arthur's 2nd wife, Ruth James Matthews. That book does not follow the Arthur Tull line but it does give a specific date for the marriage of Arthur and Ruth - 17 Oct 1817 and several specific birthdates of some of the children of the 2nd marriage. Susan Jane is listed as Susannah but no specific date for her nor any additional information. To this point, none of us have found any incorrect information in this book which is most unusual. Nice to have additional information on this line. 3. That is funny. By the way, many have chuckled over the name of a church in Greenville. Hooker Memorial Christian sounds like it would be a storefront church, but it is not. Not everyone knows that it is a family name. What are some of their children's names. I have found two Albert Cox's in Craven Co. One was born around 1913, he is age 17 in the 1930 Census. Parents are Ed and Sophia Cox. This family was listed as Neg. (Africian-American). They were living in the Fort Barnwell section of Craven co. - The other Albert Cox was born around 1926, he is age 4 in the 1930 Census. Parents are Thomas "Tom" C. and Nannie Riggs Cox. They were living in the Wintergreen area, near Cove City in this Census. Albert and his wife Mauthy lived in the Fort Barnwell area and had three children. This is the family that my mom knew of. There were about 10 children in each one of these two families. I did not find any Albert Cox's in the Craven Co. Cemetery Book. - Not any listed as Albert. Since your Albert is a little older than these two, you will need to provide some of his children's names, or maybe siblings to help pin point the cu! rrect Albert. Hope that this helps.
