    2. This is a Message Board Post that is gatewayed to this mailing list. Classification: Query Message Board URL: http://boards.ancestry.com/mbexec/msg/rw/QUB.2ACE/1073 Message Board Post: Okay..I don't know how to respond to all the nice folks who responded to the original query I made at the Rootsweb.com mailing list. It's very confusing!!!! But thanks to all of you for your prompt responses and advice! I remembered that I knew the recently retired head of the NC Dept. of Archives, so I called him, and he gave me the name of the curator I should call....will do so tomorrow! He said to ask the curator what he thought about having them kept at Archives......and making copies for family members....these were in my aunt's possession, and I had just asked for permission to copy them, but seeing the condition they were in prompted me to seek info from this board. Thanks all!!!

    1. WE NEED A HISTORY LESSON
    2. nancy stanley
    3. WE NEED A HISTORY LESSON JOHN POWELL of Loosing Swamp-- was summons to Court in March, 1743--Craven County, NC. For whatever reason he did not show up in Court. This is the only court; tax; road repair or census record we have been able to find for this gentleman. JOHN POWELL received a Land Grant/Warrant 10-May-1745--200 acres CRAVEN COUNTY, NC--later DOBBS COUNTY, NC. --on the Northside of the Neuse River and Southside of Loosing Swamp for complement 25-Sept-1745. Through the Land Grant we know where this property is located today. All the neighbors that were listed in the census, court records, other property lines and transactions, maps and articles in the paper are mention and still some are located there today from their ancestors. "NO JOHN POWELL". TAX LIST--1769 WILLIAM POWELL--Listed TAX LIST--1769 HARDY POWELL--Listed TAX LIST--1769 JOHN POWELL-- Negative We assume the below are receiving their inheritance. TAX LIST--1780 ---DANIEL POWELL TAX LIST--1780---JOHN POWELL TAX LIST--1780---FANNIE POWELL, we thought this was a female; but now believe it was a male. We know that a HARDY POWELL voted in 1779; was drafted 1780; and allege murder by Thomas Vause 1780. John McKenny, Tax Collector, in 1782 was looking for a Fannie Powell, whom he could not find any Estate for in Moseley's District, Dobbs County, NC. Could this be a Francis Hardy Powell or Hardy Francis Powell??? 1802---DANIEL POWELL went to Craven County, NC---Jury Duty. Last record we have on one of our POWELL's in the Court Records. 1780-1860--Census Records--Our Powell Line was in Dobbs /Lenoir County, NC. 1870--Census-Negative for our Powell's in Dobbs/Lenoir County, NC. 1880--Census--one Powell--our JAMES A. POWELL in Dobbs/Lenoir County, NC. He and his family left and settle in Pamilco County, NC. QUESTION: What we need to know: Did our ancestor JOHN POWELL who received the Land Grant have to live on the land itself or could he have lived in some other place? --------------------------------- Do you Yahoo!? 1. Suggestion
    2. I would like to make a suggestion. When asking for help on a name/surname it would be very helpful if dates or an estimated time frame was mention with each person. Since there is so many repeats of the same name it would help a great deal when asking for help from others. A flat out statement consisting of a name and the county name is of no help to anyone who is willing to help, especially when you come across 20 names of the same. Wishing everyone a Happy New Year Good luck on your quest!

    3. Jane, Can't answer your question because have not tried to follow the line. Also, there may be a missing generation between Evan Jones and Ann Hill and the Roger mentioned below. I would love to have the information from the Hill Bible that you reference as have never heard of it. I descend from Francis Hill and think there is a missing generation in my own line. Thank you.
